X Wing Miniature Game

How long does a 100 pt game take if you're familiar with the rules? Got an estimate for 500+ games?

I've found games go relatively quickly, but that depends on how long it takes people to decide what to do. (Not really a definitive time but it has been quite variable so far).

I had one game that seemed to take forever, because the other person took too long trying to decide what to do with each movement. I'm in favour of running a decision countdown timer to increase pace of the game ...

You could use a chess clock

just looking for an average game time where folks generally know what they're doing. An hour? more?

That sounds about the right amount of time

Gen con finals ran a bit longer than an hour.

Depends on the match up as well. Imperial mirror matches can get really long just because the ships evade so much better than they shoot. Rebel vs Rebel or Rebel vs Imperial games go faster as a lot more hits are registered.

If I was to get started with this as I do like it, what would be a good setup to get moving? I have heard 2 core boxes make it nice to have two sets of all the dice, maneuver, etc. while getting a few more ships then I figure at least one of each expansion so far. I want to have a setup so that I have everything needed for both players so friends and guests don't have to bring their own. What are your thoughts?

Also how do people store the minis?

My friend's set is the core set with one each of the expansion ships. That works very well. In addition I would suggest a 30" x 30" piece of cloth that can lay flat as a standard playing field and perhaps a laser level for LOS. I forget how he stores his ships.

For a storage suggestions check out this video. Relevant information starts at 3:00 minutes in.

Just preordered Wave 2 at Miniature Market.

Okay, finally getting in on this with my post-holiday/vacation paycheck. I ordered 2x Core, 1x TIE Fighter, 1x X-Wing (both of those for the different cards from Core), 2x Y-Wing, 2x TIE Advanced. That gets me to just over the $100 free shipping threshold from CoolstuffInc.com and should provide plenty of variety even though I know I'll be ordering 1x of the upcoming uniques.

I play a lot of different minis games and thus have a couple Battlefoam bags. So I just got the X-Wing foam trays and use those to store and transport my minis.

I'm never playing without asteroids again. It makes movement way more exciting and adds more interesting choices to this game.

I've been watching this for months now and am glad to see how popular it has become. How does it play post expansions? Is it worth the initial $100 investment (core game + expansions)?

Do you have people to play with? If so, get the starter pack and then see what you like to play. No point in grabbing all of the ships if you only like playing Rebel or Imperial. I think if you play it a while, it will quickly feel worth it.

Yeah, I went in as I currently have a captive audience and my kids are loving miniatures games. This seems like a great one to throw in the mix while we try to gradually step up the complexity of BattleTech.

What?! My edit turned it into a double post. Listen to the guy below!

Probably explains a lot about my tabletop gaming history that my first tabletop game was BattleTech. Never could get people to play with me but I spent hours as a 12 year old sitting around playing games against myself.

I was lucky. My investment has been less than $30 due to christmas, birthday and the Amazon sales. I have two core sets and all expansions plus extra TIE advance. I'm hoping amazon will do another sale so

My brother bought the extra TIE advance for me because I got him really into it. So it was a mutual benefit for him too. Any expansion is a worth while and cheap gift ideas for family and friends. Valentines day is coming folks. Too bad I'm single at the moment.

So I pulled the trigger on this for myself for my birthday. I got the Core Set with the Y-Wing (love the Ion turret) and the TIE Advanced.

I'm debating as to whether this will be too advanced for my 10 y/o to grasp.

My stuff just came in! I'm making myself wait until the kids get home to open it though. That's made easier by a schedule full of meetings today.

First game was a success! My kids love it and are excited to try the full rules.

Your killing me... am sure I am going to have a order going in soon and soooo should not pick this up...

Got the Y-Wing and and extra Tie Fighter for my birthday, completing my set of first generation ships! Can't wait to get a full sized game in.

I'm chomping at the bit to get my own starter set and some of the Gen 2 ships. I am really pleased with how balanced this game is. My son and I have played a bunch of 100-point games, and it feels like the games are always fair, even with big tweaks to the squads we fly. For example, when I tried 2 X-Wings and 2 Y-Wings it felt like the lower pilot skill and overall weakness of the individual ships was made up for with numbers, but when I went with 2 Ace X-Wing pilots and one heavy Y-Wing it was still an even match (dice aside). I can't wait to see how a handful of A-Wings match up against some TIEs.

Well, the A-wings should be overmatch against TIE's. Int's and Advanced / Avengers were better on paper against A-wings. Defenders were unholy killing machines.

The B-wing was more of a strike fighter. Decent in a fur ball but not its primary role.

Which is to say, I need to get this.

From my experience ship quantity trumps quality ships. Anybody else feel the same?

It can, hence the prevalence of the giant TIE swarms early one. Also why the 3 ship Rebel squads end up not working out. The 4 ship Rebel squads however can more than match the TIEs in firepower, and die slower so you can turn the advantage.

Ya, as awesome this game is I feel like this limits customization which is half the fun for me. Hopefully this will be fixed.

The new ships open it up a lot. The Interceptor has the most guns of any Imperial ship and the medium based models are a whole new game.
