[iOS/MOBILE] Boardgame Adaptations Catch-all

Apologies to the people I'm playing Stone Age with. My wife has been stuck in bed with awful morning sickness for 6 weeks or so now, I've barely had any access to the iPad.

Small World is one of the best pass and play games out on iPad. Honestly, i prefer it to playing with the physical copy if I'm hankering for 2 player.

Definitely. SW is a simple game, but has so many bits and bobs that it looks incredibly daunting to newbies. WAY easier to play the iPad version than to cart the box around.

And just to reply to this again... GO FOR IT. Despite the spec-war, this is why I stick with iOS. Grab a cheap iPad 2 or 3, or go for the mini. If you want to play digital boardgames, there really isn't another viable option right now.

I've been very happy with my iPad that I primarily bought for board games.

I'm not a huge fan of Smallworld but it's a silly simple fun-enough game, so maybe I'll back it if I can determine the right place on the backing-to-rewards curve. I don't have the iPad version currently.

Kickstarters should all have a field that's basically "Pay the normal price for the game..get the game."

I'd help them raise funds now but I don't want to pay extra since I'm not that particularly interested. Interested enough to buy the game once it comes out though.

I am now completely enamored with Neuroshima Hex on my iPhone. I bought it a while ago and wasn't quite sure what to make of it - I didn't even like it at first. Then I started to enjoy it until I reached a certain difficulty level and decided that luck was too strong of a factor. Then I got it into my head that, like many games, if I assume there's too much luck then I need to get better. So I played some more. Almost 100 games later I've cleared out all the stock armies on all difficulties in 2, 3, and 4 player games! I recently ponied up for the expansion armies which are a nice change of pace from the stock four.

The iOS/Android port is based on the board game of the same name which in turn is based on the Polish RPG system (there's a joke in there somewhere) Neuroshima.

There's also Neuroshima Hex Puzzles, which is just puzzle setups using the NSHex rules.

The same software company, Big Daddy, also has a port of Eclipse coming out this month.

Hey, who's in for a cozy game of Knizia's Tigris & Euphrates via Gamecenter on iPad (or, I suppose, iPhone)? Need three players, and I am happy to teach/explain.

I'd be up for it.

I'll join. Past time to give T&E and chance. You'll just have to bear with a player not knowing what they're doing.

Count me in as well. I'd love to get an actual MP game in

OK, T&E players, it looks like we have four. If we're not brothers-4-life on Gamecenter already, I'll PM you to get your handle. Cool beans!

And I'll download the game!

Looking through the half dozen asynchronous games that are on iOS, can you please suggest any that I have not considered? I am looking for a 2+ player, asynchronous multiplayer game with some more depth than Disc Drivin'.

Here are things I already play/have played:

Ascension, Nightfall, Penny Arcade card game
Carcassonne
Racer Feud
Ticket to Ride
Stone Age
Ra
Letter Press
Hero Academy
Uniwar
Disc Drivin'
Words with Friends, etc

We're all big board game lovers, but really any asynchronous suggestions would be welcome.

Summoner Wars

Great Big War Game is one that immediately comes to mind. Also Neuroshima Hex.

Have you played Titan HD? I am curious to hear impressions, since it's $8 per person to play it.

I didn't think Le Havre was Asynchronous. I have that. I'll have to get one of those going.

Titan HD is a hoot, but it can be frustrating. It took me a while to get it right.

Le Havre is very async and a good game, but it drives me nuts. The strategies are less varied than I would like. Maybe that's a function of the people I play with. I might have to re-investigate it.

EDIT: I'll give better impressions tonight. I'm doing 5 things at the same time

I'm liking Titan HD more and more myself. It helps that I know the game well and just played the Valley Games edition. I'm playing it online with Dysplastic and Cragmyre and passn'play with my son. Very, very well implemented with few confusing moments.

Yes, I need to learn it now.

Le Havre is complex, probably the most complex game I've played. You have so many things to look for each turn., and at the end of the round, you have to feed your people.

As an example, when you use a building, the Brickworks, you turn clay into brick (there are a couple of ways to get clay). For every brick you make, you also get 1/2 Franc per, with the final total being rounded down to the nearest whole number. The Brickworks is also an Industrial building, which can add value to other buildings you have, increasing your total wealth. You also have to look for Craftsman symbols, which add specific things to specific buildings, whichcankead to a good sized snowball, of your choice of strategy pans out. (like going for craftsman symbols and abusing them in the marketplace to get 5+ goods at a time, or going for Coke and Steel and a late game Shipping High Score.)

You also have to look into building ships, which have a couple of uses. They provide food, and at the nod of the game, you can use a building called the Shipping line (if it was built) to ship goods, boosting your final score.

All of this is only scratching the very top of the surface of the possibilities of Le Havre.

Special buildings, yum!

The correct answer is Battle of the Bulge. Anyone send me an invite any time. Especially drdoak.

Spoiler:

If you won't do that then Le Havre is great too. The async works really well since it can be nice to have a bit of time to ponder. That said, there isn't too much grand strategy info you have to keep in your head between sessions that can't be easily recalled by looking at the situation, so it works fine during quick sessions.

I'm not a huge fan of Le Havre - I just find it too fiddly and too dependent on the specific buildings. I find the different buildings, their abilities and their costs too annoying to keep track of, especially later on when there are tons on the board and they're all buried under each other in the UI. I appreciate euro games for their elegance - Agricola, Caylus etc are all based on systems and the variation provided by different buildings isn't a chore to keep track of.

I'm not sure I'm expressing myself well. I don't mind complex games, but I feel like games should be complex for a reason, like they're representing a simulation. The complexity offered by the variety of strategic choices offered by Le Havre just don't give me that payoff.

Yeah, I have battle of the bulge, but my buddies don't and can't run it on their iPad.
I started a Le Havre game. We'll check it out.

The Penny Arcade Deckbuilder game is now only 99 cents!

My wife has been playing this most every night on her iPad. Highly recommended.

Actually all the Playdek games are on sale for $0.99 currently. So Summoner Wars, Ascension (expansions also), Nightfall, Penny Arcade, Flux, Can't Stop and Food Fight are all on sale. I'm thinking this means I will give Flux a try. I've gotten so much time out of Ascension and Summoner Wars that I feel like I need to find some way to give them more money :-p

Just a pity the multiplayer is so badly implemented (unreliable notifications, games disappearing)… But the few games I played solo were fun, the base mechanics are solid and turns speedy. It also works great on iPhone, which is always a plus in my book.
Haven't tried any of the expansion armies, that kind of model always makes me worry I'll pay for a crappy set (see even Summoner Wars). Any tips?

Just wanted to point out, because it wasnt explicitly said, that Summoner Wars - Everything pack is $0.99. I think its usually $5 or $10

It looks like everything Playdek is $.99

Since I don't have an ipad are these playable on the iphone? or is it just not enough screen space?

Ascension is playable on the phone, but you'll spend a lot of time double-tapping on the cards (iPhone only shows the border, card art, and card title) to see what they do. Not sure about the rest.

I may be in the minority, but I LOVE Ascension on the iPhone because that means I can play it anywhere, and I don't feel it suffers from the smaller screen.
