JRPG Catch-All

I've kept it on auto, though now that I think about it I should swap it to manual. There are times I want to grab cover and he's swinging away like an idiot at some random foe.

I wouldn't say it drops the love story entirely. The love story is certainly a central arch, but it just felt rushed in my mind. "Here are two characters that are star crossed and in love even though it's been like fifteen minutes. Now believe whole-heartedly in every second of their plight".

I tend to find the OTHER stuff more interesting, but as I said, it feels like the story isn't aware of where its focus should be.

I must confess, I was all set for a good game where the entire point is the love story, too.

But again, I seem to be the odd-one-out on this game, so don't take my word on it as much as Blind, Minarchist and Stele. I'm sure they'll come to beat me with pillow cases full of soap soon enough.

You're no clockin' it, so no beating from me. Not every game is "the best game ever" to everyone, but as long as you're enjoying the combat and not bored by the story, and having fun, good enough.

For a proper clocking, give me a couple more weeks to get to it.

Having played Valkyrie Profile on the PS1 as well as the PSP version, yes, there are a lot of little improvements and it's a complaint about Lenneth that they based it on the Japanese version of VP instead of the American version, which improved a number of little usability quirks. (For example, in the American PS1 version, you could change equipment on any character, not just the ones in your party.)

Well, it seemed inevitable that I would eventually get a 3DS, but now it's imperative... c'est la vie!

So I believe people were talking about the "Persona Team" and everything earlier. This might be a hint, though it's less "hardcore journalism" and more "Oh hey, what's that? I wonder what it means?"

It is the Persona team because they used it for Arena as well. As for journalism, someone else noticed something so we are putting it up too.

Eh, Square has a teaser page up and the image is clearly from FF6. I expect it'll be an iOS port or something. If it was a 3DS remake in the vein of FFIV DS the countdown would've lasted longer.

I hope I'm wrong.

It also wouldn't be using sprite silhouettes. Probably iOS or PSP/Vita re-release with high-res sprite work like FFIV Complete Collection. Or VI-2 :p

Curiously, the url is "ff_atb". I wonder if this isn't just VI? Maybe V & VI are getting high-res ports? Taking a second look, the middle sprites look like Locke from VI but the top and bottom might be be Bartz from V...

EDIT: There was also a message at the end of the IV DS iOS port trailer saying there was something V related coming soon.

Those are all sprites from Final Fantasy V. The one that looks like Locke is the bearded dude in Thief gear.

The monster has me confused as it looks more like an FF6 beast, and the color scheme is definitely closer to FF6, but the guys on the right are definitely FF5.

Other places are talking about it being the reveal of FF: All The Bravest, which is a new FF game for mobile.

I really, really, really want to get 3DS remakes of FFV and VI that take the same approach the FFIV DS remake did.

I would pay a stupidly high game price to get them, too.

I thought All the Bravest was their English name for Bravely Default. Where did people learn that it was an FF game for mobile?

The url is: http://www.jp.square-enix.com/ff_atb/

Kinda gives it away.

Oh, I didn't notice the actual address. Yeah, I see. >_>

I'm trying to find out where the mobile info is coming from. NeoGaf had a bunch of crap about it, but I don't feel like wading back into there.

iOS can have all the Final Fantasy VI ports they want, so long as they localize Bravely Default. I never cared for VI anyway.

I was in Japan for two weeks, getting huge amounts of StreetPass tags (all puzzles complete!) and there were SO many people playing Bravely Default. I was like

Cloquette strikes again!

I actually wouldn't want a FF VI remake because I think those resources are better spent somewhere else (and I'm not convinced it would be a better game remade), but I would be pretty pleased if they released the GBA FF VI on the eShop.

Should I know what Bravely Default is?

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is a well-regarded 3DS RPG from Square that features a job system favorably compared to that of FFV. The wikipedia page should give you an idea. Clocky and I have been hoping for a localization announcement for a while, it came out there in October.

Well, I've been planning to buy it if and only if they keep that name. I've always wanted to bravely default, and being able to bravely default with a flying fairy by my side is an unexpected bonus.

Okay, maybe I'd also buy it if they don't keep the name and it's really good, but still.

On another JRPG note, I'm listening to FFXIII's soundtrack right now. Say what you will about the game, the soundtrack is so good.

Fire Emblem: Awakening will have Japanese and English audio tracks. This follows on the heels of Xenoblade Chronicles having the same. I hope Nintendo keeps this up with their voice-acted games.

Did you read Minarchist's article? Yeah, it's great. I think I got stuck on Sazh's boss and haven't gone back to the game. I will eventually. I'm not a huge fan of those boss battles. I got my switching down really well to get the bonus full combat bars, but even that doesn't seem to be enough which is just straight up frustrating.

Also, right now, my TV has a big line through it, so I just get annoyed whenever I use it. This year has ended up being mostly PC stuff so far.

Bravely Default is part of my 3DS wishlist of localizations along with Rune Factory 4, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and Dragon Quest 7. Sadly, I've given up on Beyond the Labyrinth getting localized.

Each of those "boss battles" for the Eidolons requires something more than raw firepower to win. They're each based on some specific tactic and they're all different. There's a hint as to what it might be for each on in the dialog leading up to the fight.

Spoiler:

If I remember correctly, that one required you helping your team mate enough times to get into Gesault mode with it. Oh, and get Haste if you can before this battle. It's great on general principles, but for this one it's crucial for you to be able to debuff Brunhylder while still buffing the physically-pansy Vanille fast enough to fill the meter.

I didn't like the Eidolon battles either. For a few of them, I couldn't figure out what to do in a couple tries and just looked up a strategy to follow.

Momgamer's advice to get Haste though is essential for everything. Everything! Unlike some RPGs, buffs and debuffs are powerful and game-changing in this one.

SMT IV wasn't announced yet?
