TERA Online (Now Free to Play) - Catch All

Is there some kind of 'lite' client that doesn't involve downloading rather a lot of data for 7 days play? I tried the gaikai demo but it bailed out on me.

Not that I know of currently, think they've been looking more in Gaikai's direction for that rather than doing anything like WoW's start playing immediately streaming behind the scenes model.

I just cleaned up the OP a bit and put up a link for the 7 Day Trial/Demo.

My sub ran out a couple days ago. I've enjoyed the game for its combat and graphics. I'm a bit tired of the old style quest system, end game rep/instance grinding though. Nothing wrong with that model, it's just that MMOs are the only type of game I've been playing for the past few years and I plan on going back to regular single player / co-op games until GW2 is out.

If there is new info you want added to the OP, just let me know. I still check the MMORPG Junction on a daily basis.

Sure is taking a while to download this trial. I should get a little try in tonight.

Hopefully, you'll enjoy the demo. It's a fun game and it would be awesome to have some more GWJ players.

Doesn't run well enough to pay for, I think. I'm at the point where my laptop is 4 years old and even the low-end of newer games chugs. Need a new one, I guess. I don't plan to return to proper gaming PCs.

Too bad, combat seems really fun.

I'm running it on my Macbook Pro, but it's only a year old. I understand that Tera is CPU bound and requires more CPU horsepower than an typical MMO. Perhaps because of the real-time nature of the combat, but I'm not sure.

Maybe that'll get me to try it. I've always loved the idea and the art style but I've heard it's super hardcore, which is a real turnoff to me.

Going F2P: http://tera.enmasse.com/free

Sounds like a perfectly equitable transition to me, and I'll quite likely fire the game back up once it happens. (Unlike TOR...)

I just updated the OP with the Free to Play announcement stuff. Their model sounds very good. This is definitely what TOR should have done imo.

Actually looks pretty fair to me. Might have to pick this back up, had a lot of fun when I played it last.

I wonder what this means for the market to purchase game time with in game gold? I think it was a scroll or something that added to subscription time that was bought with real world cash and sold in game for game currency.

My recollection of this game was that is was repetitive solo but the effect was lessened in groups.
It also had (unnecessary) downtime IIRC...

They had those Chronoscrolls that added in game time that could also be sold in game for gold. They won't add game time anymore but you can vendor them for 2000 gold.

I really enjoyed the combat in Tera and still rate it ahead of GW2, but the rest of the game didn't live up to it. As a F2P I could be tempted to try it again, and the bonuses for past players are nice.

Amazon.com is selling the download version for $20. I'm in at that price. Downloading now but I'll let you guys know when I'm ready for an invite.

Some time next week, most likely. 30GB? Dayum.

Yeah combat was really fun but content can be pretty repetitive solo.

That describes every MMO ever.

Anyone have any advice for how to let the game get its hooks in me? I played through the intro and spent a little time spamming my shield button and dancing like an idiot.

Play a different class?

I found the guardian class to be kind of boring. Of course, I find that character archetype boring in every game. Maybe try the warrior or the archer or something though?

Yeah, I started as a berserker and didn't get along with the slower, heavy hitting/blocking pace. Warrior with rapid attacks/dodge is much better for me.

I can now agree that the armor is a bit ridiculous, but at least they go all-in with it rather than even pretending that it's anything more than cosmetic.

I'm a Lancer.

Which class would be best to help me acheive the following goal:

Smash face with the biggest hammer possible.

Berzerker or Slayer. One is axe, the other is greatsword. There is no hammer character. (staff, great axe, lance + shield, great sword, dual swords, floaty orb/disc thingy, and bow)

I loved the Warrior combat!

I've been messing around with a Berzerker. I must say that it feels pretty gratifying. When I leap into the air and smash down on enemies I bite my lower lip in satisfaction. I haven't played Korean MMOs in awhile and I missed the flashy animation. The game doesn't have a lot of staying power for me, but for casual bashing, it's good fun.

If I only had a level-up button so I could skip the all the terrible quests, I'd gladly check out the combat and dungeons I've heard praised.

Yeah, I'm finding I can only play it in small portions owing to the generic quests and "you know that enemy type you just killed? Here's a slightly higher level one".

Seems worth trying out when it goes free to play. The big/great part of the weapon was more important than the hammers. Although Torchlight 2 has been reminding me what fantastic big hammer combat feels like.

Berzerker and Slayer are similar. There are slight differences as the Berzerker edges out the Slayer in over the top power, but the Slayer is nearly as powerful but trades some of the power for more responsiveness. That is at least in my opinion.

Here are some links to class skill videos. I think it would be worth a look:
