Crusader Kings II Spirit-all

Yeah, At one point I just stopped trying to manage them all. You are almost guaranteed an heir though, which is nice.

Yeah, it was a fun way to see it all go down the drain in good old Serbia! I actually wonder whether the non-matrilineal marriage wasn't a game bug though, because I could have sworn the betrothal was matrilineal - maybe it's that bug that some people have talked about...

My next try was playing muslims in Iberia (I bought just about all the DLC recently at the Steam sale), but I am still struggling with all the names and titles I can barely pronounce, let alone remember. Oh, and the number of kids 3 wifes give ya...

That was your first game of CK2 ever? Or first AAR? Had you played similar Paradox games before? #what'sthesecret?

Fantastic AAR!

First game of CKII, first ever Paradox game. Played a lot of Civ in the past, but this was... new. Some of the story twists happened simply because I didn't have a CLUE what I was doing

As for the AAR (not sure what the acronym stands for, but I can imagine what you mean) - it probably helps that I was a tabletop RGP game master for many a year, and an amateur author...

AAR = After Action Report

Awesome to see more folks play this amazing game. If you like this, you, may be interested in some of Paradox's other games. EU3 starts where CK3 leaves off (1399) and goes up until 1822, where you play as any nation-state in that period. A lot less personal than CK2 though; the personalities are other countries not other virtual people.

In Victoria 2, you take a nation through the industrial revolution and imperialist periods (1836-1936). It has a detailed (and some would say intimidating) population model where you have to contend with different population types, immigration and industrialization. And Hearts of Iron 3 where you play a nation through World War 2 (1936-1946); this includes a pretty detailed wargame underneath it all since the starting conditions for the game almost make WWII inevitable.

All really good games, but I think CK2 is the best so far. None of them have the same personal touch CK2 does.

I would pay good money, probably on the order of $50, to have a paradox supported converter that let me play through from one game to the next.

There was once back in the day including CK1, the original Vicky and HOI 2 I think. If they updated that for the newer entries it would be awesome.

You could actually import save from Rome to Crusader Kings to EU3 to Vicky to HoI 2: Armageddon without any converting, just copy a save from one game to another. It had some issues and bugs. I actually did Rome to CK, but due to being huge in Rome already CK was not that interesting to play. Didn't continue with it further to the other games.

Yeah, there's some fan stuff that will let you do that now. I haven't tried them in a while, there were a couple of bugs but it seemed to work OK going from EU3 to Vicky 2.

The problems in doing these conversions seem to lie with how each game has its own interpretation of "population" and province development. Well, and each game has different provinces now, making things tricky as provinces are broken up or merged together.

The biggest issue, though, with the game I took from EU3 to Vicky 2 was that I was so dominant in EU3 that Vicky 2 was not all that much fun. To echo what wanderingtaoist said, being super successful in an earlier game means that the next game will not be all that interesting.

Great AAR

Daaaaamn.

I love this game.

Yeah, that was awesomely written!

I fully dug that AAR. I loved how you just played the hand you were dealt and made a story out of the disaster that followed.

The Republic is out Monday! With a new patch containing:

  • Ultimogeniture Succession: the youngest child inherits
  • Tanistry: A version of Feudal Elective where the electors must pick a member of your dynasty, but will tend to pick distant relatives, preferably old claimants
  • Grant Independence Diplomatic option
  • Automatic cultural renaming of titles in your realm. So you'll automatically see Smyrna turn into Izmir if held by Turks, etc.
  • Added 1241 Bookmark - "The Mongols"
  • The Reign length opinion modifers are now dependent on how long a character has been the liege of someone, not how long the primary title has been held
  • All merc regiments now grow in max size over time
  • Added more mercenary bands: Finns, Lapps, Abyssinians, Nubians, Lithuanians, Scots, Irish and Alans

Get psyched!

That's a real thing? There were kingdoms where the youngest inherited the estate? I'd live to hear more if you care to tell.

From Wikipedia, referencing the Encyclopedia Brittanica:

    Wikipedia wrote:

In the German Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, land-holdings traditionally passed to the youngest son, who might then employ his older brothers as farm workers.

Only germane to CK2 reference I could find.

Not that I want to deprive Paradox of a sale, but I think that ultimogeniture is actually not in the DLC itself, but in the 1.09 patch that will be released at the same time.

Yes, the items I listed are supposed to be in the free patch that will come out alongside The Republic. So Ultimogeniture succession will be free.

Edit: Full patch notes for 1.09 here (may need to register).

    Awesomeness

That was great. The dynastic cuckoo line in particular was perfect.

    Bravo!

Re: ultimogeniture, I think the Wikipedia article on it has about as much info as I've ever seen. It typically only gets a passing mention in history books, if it's mentioned at all. Usually it's along the lines of "and then there was this goofy way of passing down lands in some areas. Period."

And even with that feature being free I'll still buy the patch, just to reward them for adding ultimogeniture in the first place!

Well and the mechanics in The Republic sound cool too!

I'm a little disappointed that CK2 got no mentions it all in the GOTY discussions on the last couple of podcasts. I thought for sure Rabbit or Zacny would have been all up ons.

Well, it's CK2 and XCOM atop my list. Maybe FTL after that.

CK2 is my game of the year for sure.

And EU4 is really the only game I'm looking forward to in 2013. Though I'm honestly not as on top of the release schedules as I once was, so I may just be unaware of something else awesome.

This is exactly where I am. All the way down the line.

I also was disappointed by the lack of CK2 in the game of the year podcasts, at least the ones I listen to regularly (maybe I am listening to the wrong gaming podcasts). Especially on the CC. It's too bad folks seemingly missed out on this gem.

Bah, the only folks worth anything did not miss out on the game, and that's all that matters

That is a huge list of changes for a patch.

hum, I have heard about the mod of Games of Throne.

Is it any good? And where could I get it?

Don't forget the new DLC comes out today!

    No clue, buddy. Sorry!

So is there a Steam compatible version of the DLC out yet? or will there be a lag on the Steam version's release?

Hmm, yeah. It looks like it is available on GG but not on Steam. Although I have no idea if it is just "for sale" on GG or if you would really get your key if you bought right now.

I'm waiting to pick up The Republic until after I am finished with my current Denmark game.
