Dark Souls Catch-All

I just summoned the 2 NPC guys for that. If you want an easy way to do it, try that.

Yes, I think that's the only way I'm going to get past ole Chuckles here. I don't have any Humanity right now, but I think the Blacksmith has some, so I'm going to go bash some heads until I can afford it. It's getting frustrating being so close to the bell tower and hearing other people ring it.

I'm on PS3, Fed.

You've got it right on all counts, Aries. Do it on the little bridge right in front of Capra's door.

You'll get one humanity (soft = stat, not hard = item), and can use it to revive to human at a bonfire.

KD - I don't think he has any. Best thing imho is the same as Aries - be a helper in order to get humanity, then summon help. Most people put their signs right outside the door to the church, near the bridge to the smith.

Aries wrote:

"Put your sign down..." That is with the white soapstone, right? I haven't done that yet. If I get summoned in and beat the guy, it doesn't count in my world, does it? Humanity if you win though? That's good to know.

Yeah that's the way to do a lot of things in this game. Put a sign down and help someone out as a phantom. Earn humanity. Then revive yourself, summon a phantom, and beat it. Things keep getting passed along like that.

You can earn a ton of souls co-oping, too. You can help others an unlimited time per boss, as long as you're in a decent level range.

AH HAH! I wasn't actually in human form before... that's why I didn't see any signs! You have to go to the bonfire and "reverse hollow"! Gah, I don't know why I didn't realize that before.

Thanks Fed for saying "revive to human at a bonfire" and Stele, for saying "revive yourself"! I dunno how long it would've taken to click, otherwise.

Damn game.

Haaaaaaha. It took me awhile to figure that out. I still haven't tried playing as a Phantom but will have to do so whenever I get stuck.

Edit: Just be aware that you can get invaded when you are human. It kinda sucks. I've been invaded once. Fortunately, I managed to summon someone else and we killed the bastard eventually.

You can drop your sign while hollow, though. It is a good way to get the humanity you need.

Blighttown not fun, just annoying.

I'm having a nice relaxing day replaying ME3 on insanity. I think I'll put off Dark Souls until tomorrow. :)

Hmm, I seem to be one of the only people that really liked both Sen's and Blighttown. I love them for the same reason that Tower of Latria is such an incredible place in Demon's Souls, atmosphere and fear of the unknown. Though Tower of Latria is still better than both of those areas.

The only zone in Dark Souls I thought wasn't very good was Lost Izalith.

Lost Izalith sucks, but not in the same way as Blighttown.

Speaking of which, I made it to the boss door in BT on my Strength character. Where I was promptly invaded and killed. By a cheap-ass sorceror.

Playing this game with no magic of any kind is a different experience. Heavy Crossbow helps a little, though.

By the way, that cartoon was awesome!

Reviving yourself is for sissies. Just help others with a boss repeatedly until you understand how it works and then tackle it yourself like the hero you are.

I do appreciate the atmosphere, I just didn't find "where's the ladder" a very fun game to play, and bugs are annoyingly hard to hit. Also, unlike previous areas, there's some odd brightness filters going on that occasionally (and inconsistently) makes it impossible to see 3 feet in front of me.

Spoiler:

(I might have just quit the game if toxic snipers respawned with everyone else.)

The ladders usually have a torch at the top and bottom, so look by them.

Downed Seath and Sif today, got through New Londo but not having much luck with 4 kings. Might come back to them last once I've gained a few levels and maybe leveled an elemental weapon (currently using +14 Zweihander).

That weapon should be perfectly fine for them. You may just need to change your approach to that fight.

Spoiler:

Put on Havel's Armor for max poise, 2h your Zweihander, and go to town on them. Chug Estus through their damage. It sounds counter intuitive, but a reckless approach is the best way to kill the 4 Kings. If you still need more damage, use the Power Within pyro spell.

God damn it. I went to go get the rusted ring. I fell through the floor once I got back to Northern Undead Asylum. I was about to go sit at the fire there but walked over to kill one of the... I'm falling... Asylum Demon = me dead in 1 hit with my shield up. Crap.

Agreed. That's the strategy most people resort to for that boss, no matter what build you have.

Haven't caught up on the thread yet, just popping in to say I killed (solo... maybe overleveled sorcerer?) the gaping dragon last night, and killed an invader this morning, and feel pretty good! Love this game

I got my rusted ring and spider shield, so I think I'm about ready for Blight Town.

So, I guess where I'm at is that I need to grind now (kind of a bummer) for enough souls to buy what I need in terms of miracles and rings. Kind of a drag. Grinding, I mean. Where's the best place to do this?

What makes you think you need to grind? You really never need to grind in this game. You can if you want, but this is not a typical JRPG. Gimpy beat the whole game as a level 5 character.

If you still want to to give yourself a slight edge, there is a place in Darkroot that most people tend to farm for souls. You need to buy the Crest of Artorias to access this area easily.

Well, I want to be prepared. And my understanding is that many of the areas will change in terms of NPCs once I finish Blight Town. So I want to have the souls to purchase the various rings and miracles while they're still available.

Grinding isn't necessary, but imho, the most fun thing to do would be to co-op some boss over and over.

Man, I can no stop playing this game! Not even to work on my first playthrough of Demon's Souls.

This morning I started a Dex character. I liked the starting stats of the Hunter the best. Right now I'm thinking he'll use some awesome katana and also be proficient with bows. Since he started with a bow, I just had to kill a certain snickering undead fellow to get a katana to start with. I just reached the chapel, and may try to do some co-op gargoyles tonight.

Unless I'm finishing Blighttown on my Strength character.

Or playing my Cleric. Or my NG+ sorceror.

Or doing something besides playing Dark Souls, but what are the chances?

DSG - Vendors are not going to be disappearing on you.

DSG - As others have said grinding isn't necessary. Don't grind to buy a ring because all the best rings are found rather than purchased. I can understand grinding for a spell, but only if it's one of the high level spells that are available in the 2nd half of the game.

If you need 5-10k souls just to get some new spells I would do some co-op for Quelaag or the Gaping Dragon.

What are the things you want to buy?

I'm excited to fire this up for the first time today! And before I have even started I'm questioning my choice of character class. I know if it's anything like Demon's Souls (which I played) the choice of class doesn't matter much, but that rarely stops me.

From what Fed wrote just on this page it seems likely to end up with multiple different characters. Has that been common for most of you?

Also, how often are people playing this co-op?

Co-op is fantastic in this game. What platform are you on?

My Dragoncrest rings are pretty awesome. They were worth the forty thousands souls.

My current character is pushing points into endurance and vitality and having a ton of purchased and looted gear has helped a lot. I can stack effects like sorcery damage, fire protection, poise, etc. If you gather everything you come across, including merchant items, you gain the ability to create situationally powerful loadouts.

This game sure gets under your skin once you start. I've been playing all day and still haven't made it to Blight Town. I ended up going to Darkroot Garden and getting various items. Got Mothra by just summoning The Witch. I'm a melee character and didn't want to mess with it. I did get the killing blow in, though. I really like The Elite Knight set armor. I still don't have quite enough endurance for it, so I'm using everything except the chest armor. I kept my chain mail for that. I like being able to move quickly.

Lautrec is a vendor?

Fedaykin98 wrote:

Rhea does. And those are some quality miracles. But that's a bit later on in the game.

Also Lautrec Laurentis (stupid similar names) does too if you follow a certain path. But I think most of his stuff is available from Quelana.

And of course Shiva is only temporary, only when you're in the covenant.

Big Hat Logan disappears for a while too, but Griggs teaches his stuff.
