Evil Dead Reboot

The video games are the closest you'll get. IIRC, Bruce has said that he's too old to play Ash, and isn't particularly interested in doing so anyway.

The great thing about Campbell's Evil Dead was the combination of horror and comedy. It gave a its own niche.

To me, this is just another gore fest that'll get lumped in with movies like Hostel.

Raimi's a co-writer, and both Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Campbell are producers. Evil Dead didn't have much intentional comedy (Evil Dead 2 is the one with the best mix), and this is supposedly the Evil Dead they would have made if they had money & experience back in '81. I don't doubt it will be gory though, since the original was. Don't you remember Ash chopping up this possessed friends?

The fact that both Campbell and Raimi are doing this instills even greater confidence in it as its own project. Still would like to see more Ash. I don't care if he's 54. He's young enough to me.

There's a comic series in addition to the games I linked, not sure how good it is though.

Nice, Stengah!

I really like this trailer. Probably one of the best trailers I've seen. Only way to describe my reaction:

I'm still somewhat dubious.

I'd like to know how involved Raimi and Campbell are. Were they on-set? Did they have script approval? Or are they just getting a cheque?

I saw the original films when they opened, and remember the controversy, especially with Evil Dead 2. But once we sat in the theatre and the film started, then everyone there got the joke, and there was as much laughter in the theatre as there were gasps. But the redband trailer just looks far too torture porn and slasher for me. I don't see Raimi's humour in at all, or Diablo Cody's. Granted, it's just a trailer, perhaps one cut to generate interest solely with the Saw crowd.

I'll follow the reviews for this, but not feeling too hopeful at this point.

This one isn't supposed to be comedic at all. They are trying to accomplish what they wanted to accomplish with ED1, but couldn't because of the lack of a good budget.

Here's an interview with Campbell that has a fair bit of info of how involved they were with the new one. Highlights for me: Not going to be 3D; predominantly make-up effects instead of CG; Raimi and Campbell definitely had input, but were more interested in helping Alvarez shoot his re-imagined Evil Dead than having him just re-shoot the original; the violence will more fantastical, less torture-porn.

Thanks, Stengah, for the link.

Well I think you may actually get one, read this. Raimi may write evil dead 4, for real this time.

Wooo!

Looks like it is getting a lot of positive attention.

Well, the 30 second trailer in front of the youtube video you actually wanted to see just went meta.

And here is another new little trailer they did for the WonderCon thing.

Whoever has been behind the marketing for this movie needs a bonus.

So no one but me saw this? I liked it a lot. The after-credits part was awesome so don't miss that.

Like I said before, I want to see it but the gore has just been ramped up so much. I know the old movie was gory but it was more "campy gory" to me.

I liked it. But, I was also a fan of the first two movies who had no clue, going in, that the third was a comedy.

I thought they did a great job of rebooting the series, and I'd love to see this second series continue.

I saw it earlier today and thought it was great. There was a good mix of callbacks to the originals mixed in with the new take on the story.

Them actually having a budget this time around did make quite the difference. In terms of what happens it not a whole lot worse than the original, but it looks worse because they're not using red karo syrup for blood and have professional prosthetics this time around.

I find it weird that this movie had almost no (was there actually none?) nudity, but on fox shows they'll show pretend blow jobs with head movements. Bizzaro world.

There was very little, and it certainly wasn't meant to be titillating.

Spoiler:

The abomination was naked, but it was a mockery of Mia's body and was only partially anatomically correct. It was also a guy (in a bodysuit) according to the credits. The women in the illustrations of the book were nude as well.

Brr.

Away goes my remaining inclination to watch this movie!!

Maaan, I was so hoping to see Jane Levy naked!

Went and saw this one and wasn't terribly impressed. Sure it's gross and gory, but it's not scary.

Why can't anyone make any good scary movies anymore? Sinister was the last one in recent memory that was actually good.

Because it's a horror movie and not a 'scary' movie?

hor·ror [hawr-er, hor-]
noun
1.
an overwhelming and painful feeling caused by something frightfully shocking, terrifying, or revolting; a shuddering fear: to shrink back from a mutilated corpse in horror.

The Evil Dead series has always leaned towards the revolting side of horror. Granted, fear and horror often go hand in hand, but they can be mutually exclusive.

I was lucky enough to see this the weekend before my son was born, so it's probably the last movie like this I'll be able to see for a while. I have never seen the first Evil Dead, so I was pretty surprised at some of the over-the-top scenes. But all in all I really enjoyed it.

First Evil Dead i had just moved to TN from Cleveland OH so the woods were naturally scary and the movie terrorfied me. The new one jsut gets a raised eyebrow due to the icky factor and that's it.

Again, I'll point out that we all have different fears. That comes from different experiences and putting different values on different things - being human, in short.

That said, the reboot was more a thrill ride than a scary film. Films that genuinely tap into my fears are my favorite. I'll still take a great thrill ride over a mediocre, pandering "scary" film without hesitation.
