Tennessee Game Days Post-Mortem: Stoners and Cunning Carrots

Pages

Hey gang,

So this is a thing. Looks to be a non-miniature, non-CCG pure board game meetup at a nice convention hall south of Nashville. They have a pretty extensive list of games there, even more they will bring if someone asks them to, and you can bring your own (I'm bringing Eclipse, for instance). 3 days, family-friendly, tons to eat and drink nearby and plenty to do around here if you feel so inclined.

Trichy and I both live nearby and will be going. We've already talked a couple other Goodjers into coming down; we should see if we can take it over! Registration is a measly $25 per person. Be there, or be endlessly ridiculed by your peers!

Looks like there are rooms nearby (you want to see "Cool Springs" in the name, or just map the sucker) for as low as $52. FYI.

If you need a cheap hotel room, let me know. I might have a hookup for you. Otherwise, there is limited room at Casa del Trichy.

Earmarking for sexiness.

Oooh, that's only a few hours away. Although there might be a wedding that weekend... Bookmarked until further notice!

Minarchist would offer Chateaux Minarchist but it's looking very likely that said chateaux will be under construction during that time frame.

Spoiler:

Also, I'm a jerk.

Anyway, don't feel like you have to stay at that hotel; there are probably 20 within a mile.

EDIT: see OP for a bit more info re: hotels

I went in 2010, and other than this little snafu, it was a lot of fun. HUGE library of games there, including some really unique stuff. It's family friendly, and the location it's at has a lot of excellent resturaunts and bars nearby. Nashville's a great city to visit, and Minarchist and I can point you to some awesome places.

Hmmmmm I love Nashville!

So, from somebody that's never gone to a gaming 'thing' before to somebody who has, what is it like? What's the day-to-day? Do groups of people/friends/etc tend to stay together?

This seems like a very open format get-together with random people playing random board games in a big room. My wife isn't that into board games (especially complicated or 'hardcore' ones) and I was hoping that we both could have a good time if we did decide to go.

I'm not a big board gamer but this is very close to me. If I'm in town I might just stop by to meet some people.

This is relevant to my interests.

I got the all clear from the wife, so now it's just a matter of figuring out a way to get down there for me. I was considering driving, but it's just shy of 9 hours so that may not be possible. Would nearby Goodjer's be willing to cart me around if I decide to fly?

As for the actual event, count me in for early/late Fri (depending on transport)/ all day Saturday for sure, as Sunday will probably just be a travel day.

That can probably be arranged.

Trichy can speak into it better, but from what I understand it is "family-friendly" in the sense that it is also significant other friendly. Games like Arkham Horror and TI3 are there, if you want them, but a lot of stuff is people meshing over more crowd-pleasing experiences like Ticket to Ride or Wits and Wagers. If we get a big enough contingent of GWJers, though, I could see us setting up our own little corner.

"Hey everyone--we heard you were having a get together. We'll just hang out over here and play by ourselves if that's cool. You all just stay over there. Away from us. Faaaar away from us."

SonuvaFemale Doggo! I don't think I will be moved into my new digs in Nashville by then.

Yeah...maybe not quite like that.

Wish I could go.

With the caveat that it's been a few years since I've been: There were three open rooms full of tables for gaming. Two were open for anyone to play anything, but the third was reserved at specific times for various tournaments. It's very loosely organized. There are representatives from some local board game stores, and there was one dude there demonstrating his own board game. The game library is in the biggest room. The tournaments are about the limit of any organized events.

The range of games is MASSIVE. There's the prerequisite Catan and MTG tables, but there's also people playing Arkham Horror, Imperial 2020, Ticket To Ride, and dozens more. My friend and I spent two hours on this ludicrously elaborate customizable shuffleboard game with obstacles and things. There's usually a few chessboards there (stay the f*ck away from Minarchist), and I saw a few kids playing Apples to Apples in the corner. The only real restriction I noticed had to do with the family friendly vibe. If we want to break out Cards against Humanity, it would probably be best to wait until we hit a bar or something. Other than that, game on.

Interested definitely.

If you don't mind the price (200-250ish) The Hutton hotel in downtown Nashville is one of the nicest hotels I've been to and I actually travel a decent amount. They are actually having a sale today and you can get it for 196.

This is interesting if I can get away from the castle for a weekend... Are there other ohioans or others coming from the north that would like to have a car pool thing going?

Okay, we have two out-of-towners confirmed so far, and I just registered myself. w00t.

Ahem. Not just any two out-of-towners...

...The BEST two out-of-towners.

(it's us two)

What did I tell you guys about how only bad writers assume their audience is stupid?

Now we have to get more Goodjers attending. If my house is filled with only bad writers, they'll leave a taint of bad writing. A taint!

Taint flavored lipgloss?

Oh sure, go for the low-hanging fruit.

So how much house space do you have there trichy?

Wait, I'm confused. Are we playing board games or writing some GWJ-themed fan fiction? I'm not sure how I feel about that.

A fair amount. We have couches and a few spare rooms for Friday and Saturday night. PM me if you have questions.

Less writing and more LARPing. Carrot has dibs on the Certis costume.
