The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Catch-All

All they've ever said is "early 2013". I don't think I've even seen January as a confirmed date.

I read on the Bethesda blog that PS3 would get Dragonborn before the other two. Let me see if I can dig up the link.

Edit: Here - comment made by "gstaff" from Bethesda toward the bottom of the comments.

Well, given that Xbox has it, and we don't. Fail!

EDIT: Oh, I see what you mean, Dragonborn before Dawnguard and Hearthfire, yeah. PS3 is waiting for their first DLC, which will be Dragonborn, then we'll see about the other bits later. Still think its funny that they can't bring Dragonbone weapons and some of the other little things from Dawnguard to PS3 already. My assassin/thief is stuck with a glass bow.

They haven't said anything since then, and with the Xbox exclusivity period being over, not saying anything now just doesn't come off well after the months of not saying anything about the PlayStation3 versions of stuff. Was amusing, on the ES Forums on Bethesda's website... for the last month, the PC and PS3 players were "brothers in binds" to quote Ralof. Now we're past that period and some PC players are very quickly turning into "F*** the PS3, if the PC version is ready, release it now! They can still wait! I want it now!"

Either way, I can understand if there is no new news, or if there is bad news (like Mid February or March, which isn't really EARLY, and then you really should have just said Q1 2013)... but still, just SAY something. "It's not ready yet, we don't have a firm estimate but hope to be ready within X weeks, but keep in mind it'll be released when its ready." That's not great, but it's better than complete silence. Bethesda's PR is so good at hyping new products, but really falls flat when it comes to bad news or appeasing hungry and excited fans who want to play their products that aren't quite ready yet.

The annoying thing from my PC gamer perspective is that the reasons for it not being released on PC are probably business related rather than technical. I can appreciate that the PS3 has got the short end of the stick technically too.

Yeah, I really hope Bethesda has learned a lesson in this and Fallout 4 isn't another instance of exclusivities. Just release it for everyone when its done. Having that one console get everything early doesn't make me want to buy that console, it makes me want to smack the guys who struck that deal for thinking that playing favorites with customers for money is a good idea when you clearly can't play favorites with everyone.

I agree, but I also sigh to myself and think they wouldn't throw around the money to make those kinds of deals if they didn't work.

Truth.

At this stage in the current-gen of consoles, I'm not sure these deals do 'work' in the way they are intended. How many people would now buy an Xbox, purely down to the early-access to DLC content? If it was a new console, or soon after release, then maybe so. I just can't help but think the MS just do it for 'bragging rights' in order to garner Company preferance with consumers between themselves and Sony, probably the majority of consumers have already chosen their path, or have enough spare cash to do both. I doubt they even really consider the PC as competition in this sense, at least in the current form of the PC gaming OS divide.

As both a PC and an xbox user, it actually pushes me away from MS that this kind of thing is done. I don't care who gets it 'first', I just want everyone to get it, and fairly, at the same time and at a fair cost. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Sony would love to have the exclusive, and they'd be in the same boat. Surely there can't be any 'surprises' left in Dragonborn once it's been out for 30 days on one platform and there have been countless reviews/blogs? (unless, like I, you completely media blackout the subject of Dragonborn content).

On the other hand, I have plenty still to do in Skyrim before the DLC gets here, so I better get smithing

(unless, like I, you completely media blackout the subject of Dragonborn content)

Yup, haven't read a single review except to check scores just to get an idea of how it was.

Dawnguard, pretty much spoiled to death at this point. The dragonbone weapons and crossbows are my main desire from that. Hearthfire, well there wasn't much to spoil there anyway really.

My question is, what is Bethesda's play towards PS3 when they catch up going to be? Both addons were on sale in the Steam sale and Xbox Live stores for 50-75% off. Are they really expecting to release at full price to PS3? I can't imagine that going over well for them either.

...I see what you did there.

Another day, another lack of updates from Bethesda. I don't get it, clearly. I would have thought, in PR, your main job when getting ready to release something cool would be "Hey, look at this cool thing, get excited because you can buy it (approximately) this date!" I'm beginning to wonder if the exclusivity agreements included marketing of DLCs to groups outside of Xbox, as there's really no reason for this kind of stonewall on even a "we're working on it still, we'll update you in a week".

I could even get them not giving dates and sticking to a "when it's done" style development (though I don't think anything from Bethesda Softworks could ever really be called "done" more like, "we're sick of working on it, we'll fix stuff when we get some motivation back, enjoy what you can".

Or, we don't actually know it's ready. Although I very much doubt it's unfinished at least on PC, whether it is or not is only known by Bethesda.

That said, I'll agree on the lack of communication. Crap PR seems to be either the cause or a huge amplifier to disgruntled (potential) customers. Even bad news isn't so bad as keeping people in the dark.

At the very least, PC should be ready, it's a module basically.

But yeah, Bad news sucks, but it's ripping off a bandaid. Rather than just ripping it off, Bethesda's approach seems to be... wait until fully healed and the bandaid has gotten little bits of water under the edge of the adhesive and is ready to fall off without any effort.

According to Gstaff on the Bethesda forums: Not this week.

Non Dragonborn quandary: My first character was a night blade style mage/thief that I got into the 20s before I realized I had spread out my points too much and further leveling was going to be painful. I've started a two handed warrior and been powering through the companion and main storyline quests. Here's the problem - two handed is super boring. Overall I like my warrior but want a different play style than rushing in and cutting things down in a few hits. Is there any way to make two handed weapons more interesting? Should I switch to sword and board or two weapons?

Sword and board is definitely interesting... especially as you get into some of the block skills (the one to slow time as someone is power attacking is especially overpowered and awesome. I could see playing one handed with some magic backup working too, something like illusion to control enemies (fear, frenzy, later paralyze or even invisibility to really mess with them) or destruction focusing on ice and lightning to drain opponents stamina and mana respectively.

Do you have the Sweep perk? I'm working on Two-Handed, after sword-and-board, and thought it was okay until Sweep made it pretty fun.

I do like sword-and-board best though: you get the benefits of all the Block perks*, and the speed of a one-handed weapon keeps combat fast and fluid. Two-handed took a while to grow on me: I spend more time blocking and waiting, since it's slower and I have to be more deliberate with my strikes; though Sweep has been a huge help.

I experimented with bi-wielding in Bards College, but didn't like it. The damage advantage isn't worth giving up blocking, so you either go with light armour and try to be mobile (risky) or heavy armour and hope to soak everything up (boring).

*I think the Block perks that specifically mention "shield" are the only ones that won't work while blocking with a two-handed weapon (Deflect Arrows, Elemental Protection, Shield Charge).

Personally I find it hard to live without my Bow. Especially with the new special arrows mod that I have.

Well yeah, my enhanced crossbow and 600 bolts are indispensable (thank you, arrow crafting!), I figured we were just talking about melee combat.

Well for melee combat, nothing says love like a 30x sneak critical from my dagger:)

Take down a giant in a single hit. Booyeah!

I'll throw in another vote for sword-and-board being flat out more fun than 2-handed (and pretty much everything else with the possible exception of sneak attacking IMO).

I'm a dual wield cause it looks cool kinda of guy.

I just don't get it to be honest. Does it double your damage (in theory) by just hammering both triggers instead of one?

There's a mod for that.

i use PC and I alternate left right mouse button with weapons wit different enchnaments, so I am always swinging and there are nogaps for them to recover and attack.

but mostly...it looks cool.

Seems like it'd be tiring for both my fingers. I just love sword and board too much to drop that though.

Pretty much. And swing speed is based on what you have in your off hand, so a sword primary and dagger secondary is pretty crazy. I use spells at range and generally dual wield for melee and it works rather well. You can also get more magical effects, since you're holding two weapons. I'll usually hold the Razor in my off hand for the insta-kill chance or the Blade of Woe for healing, but Dawnstar can be fun, etc. And it's kinda cool to be able to take out a Deathlord in like 2 hits. From a technique perspective though, it's probably even less interesting than 2-handed, since there's no block option.

The great thing compared to 2-handed is that your one-hand skill applies to both dual wield and sword & board, so you can swap between a weapon and a shield in your off hand based on whether you want more attack power or defense. Or even sword & spell, though I don't do that very often.

I'm hoping you guys can give me a little help. I haven't played Skyrim for at least 8 months, so I haven't kept up to date with the latest enhancements/balancing to the game. I'm going to start a new character tomorrow morning, I want to build a character that mainly uses the bow and maybe a dagger or some sort of close range weapon when things get personal (almost a Legolas char), I don't really want to be using magic, as I have another character for that, and it's what I've done for Oblivion and Skyrim before.

Can you guys give me a quick run down on the skills I should be focusing on other than the obvious Bow skill, what armour do you think would be best etc and what race I should be/would be best.

I suppose by now this is old hat, but I'd like some advise either way, I did look at a character building guide on GameFaq's but I'm being a but lazy and don't wanna read all the ins and outs, just a comprehensive, choose x, then y then z.

I hope I'm not asking too much...

Thanks in advance

Well the obvious answer is Bosmer, archery, stealth, light armour. Each Elder Scrolls race kind of has an archetypal playstyle it lends itself to but really just choose whatever race you want they can all do the same thing. Bosmer will just get you a headstart with your bows and lorewise it sounds like what you're going for. Just don't eat any plants. Only people
