Awesomenauts Catch-All of Awesomeness! Now on Steam!

Good luck!

I just got the game yesterday so everybody feel free to friend me up for group play.

We were SO CLOSE to winning that last game! Just one more bar. My bad, when I think about it, perhaps you should've went for their base since it was so low...

Also, I died a few times when I shouldn't have :-/

You're doing good, just keep at it! Hopefully you want to participate in the GWJ Tournament /wink /wink

So update on the APL Tourney: There are now 32 teams competing in next week's tournament (1/12, Saturday, 1pm PST). If anyone else wants to join our team please let me know. As Cyrax pointed out, we might need substitutes in case we have unstable internet connection.

As for our own GWJ Tournament, it probably won't start until sometime after the APL Tourney and I've picked up three copies of Swords and Soldiers HD + DLC as first prize.

However, Gdawg stepped up and has some other games as alternatives, but we'll only use his games if we can get more players to participate.

APL Update:

Bracket is up! http://apl.iougaming.com/pages/ladder/

I've also added Gdawg27 as our sub/4th player in case one of us have difficulties getting online.

I thought it was a GWJ tournament These look really cool and well organized. But so far I just played the tutorial.
And I don't want to hold you guys back.
I work tomorrow till 6pm. If you are stuck and need a body...I am willing to give it my best

Thanks for stepping up! I think we're good with the tourneys, however if you still want to participate you're more than welcome. Just find two other people to friendup and reach out to the tourney organizers above. Please note, we'll be playing against guys who have logged in TONS of hours into this game and probably take this game more seriously.

Cyrax, Kyoshero, and I will be guinea pigs to check out 'the scene.' Hopefully it's not too serious like DOTA or LoL (which is something I've been trying to avoid). I'm still waiting a response from APL on whether we're in or not. If we don't get in, no biggie because we will be hosting our own GWJ tournament which will be more approachable to players still new to the game. I talked to Kyo last night and he's willing to chip in on prizes.

Anyone here interested in a GWJ tournament respond to this thread.

I'm trying to gauge interest in those who are willing to participate in a GWJ tournament. Please respond here, on the steam disccusion forum, or contact me directly.

Players interested thus far:

  • UMOarsman
  • Sparhawk
  • alexjg42
  • cyrax
  • Gravity
  • checkm-8
  • gdawg27
  • Aaaaaaaandy

That makes a little over two teams....we need more people!!

Working Rules (ripped from APL tournament with minor twists)

- Single elimination style, matches will still be Bo3 (Best of 3) and the finals will be Bo5
- If your team wants to enter just let me know via Steam or GWJ website
- Maps are random
- If a player gets disconnected during the match they MUST join with the same naut/build as when they got d/c
- Matches must start 3v3 with no bots. If you are unable to have all 3 of your members in the match at the appointed time, then your team will forfeit the match*
- Higher seed team hosts map 1+3, Lower seed team hosts map 2
- Teams are allowed a 5 minute break between maps. If a team shows up after the 5 minute break it will result in that team forfeiting that map*
- The tournament will take place over the course of a few days and conclude on XX/XX/2013 (placeholder), with the finals taking place at XX/XX/2013 (another placeholder) to give players under different time zones and real life obligations a chance to participate
- The restriction, no advanced perks are allowed to give new players a chance. (AKA no perks from beyond the first four from each row will be used. The exceptions are piggy bank and health pills since they are easy to obtain early levels)

* In an event all participating players are not present, if all sides agree. There can be a reschedule of the match. However, all games must be completed by XX/XX/2013 (placeholder for date as the finals will start on XX/XX/2013)

Prizes:

- Nothing too fancy, perhaps a steam game under $5 for each member of the winning team. However we need more people participating to make this exciting/viable. At least get four teams (16 goodjers). I'll even consider 2nd and 3rd prizes if more participate.

Wish I was a bit more awesome right now. Stuck at in-laws.

Don't worry, Aaaaaaaandy has been doing the heavy lifting by temporarily replacing you. We had some epic matches the other night. We jumped into a game where all our turrets fell, I had 7 deaths and we still managed to pull the win. All while the other team was trash talking. Felt so good!

Our GWJ tourney membership is still low-which I don't mind. I hope others will participate.

Are those your words, checkm-8? If not, it looks a little odd without you using quotes. Are you referring to the GWJ tourney for those rules? It's a fair idea.

Scrimming's fine with me. I've chosen to considerably decrease my media consumption of late, so one or two matches a day would be my limit.

New Year's resolution to decrease media consumption? What steps are you taking.

Also, those are for the APL not the GWJ tourney. I'll try and reach out to one/all of team RNG to schedule some matches.

Proposed Draft System: http://apl.iougaming.com/threads/awe...

Kyo, Cyrax, Gdawg, and other Goodjers. If you want to try this out, let me know. Also, should we reach out to team RNG (the first team we're playing against) to get some scrimmage matches in?

In other MOBA's, such as DOTA 2 or LOL, there is a system for picking characters which allows for banning or counter picking of characters, making line ups more varied and team composition a more strategic mater, rather than pick a team composition and hope the oponent isn't packing a counter

I've been talking with TMT about this, and we reckon it would be worth testing out whether a DOTA style draft system works within Awesomenauts. The system I belive we could use would go something like this: both teams have a ban, which stops a naut being used by both teams, then each has 3 picks. These picks would be made in sequence and in public, allowing both sides to see picks of the other team. the sequence goes something like this

1st team ban
2nd team ban
1st team 1st pick
2nd team 1st and 2nd pick
1st team 2nd and 3rd pick
2nd team 3rd pick

So, we're going to have a few informal games testing this on mumble. this is going to be pick up games, not organised teams, and wont effect seeding points or any other apl things. The time this will be is this friday, at 7pm GMT 0+ (the same time this post was posted). Come along, have some fun, and see if drafting systems work in awesomenauts.

We are also asking if any teams want to try making this system work in a scrims. That way, we can also see if it works in a competitive environment.

for those who could be bothered to read the whole thing

I've limited TV/video time by only watching during personal breaks, and one show a night that I'm into. So, no more Biggest Loser or AI for me. The later's no doubt a healthy thing. I've also limited gaming to 30min, give or take. That doesn't take into gaming on breaks, or more casual games. Look at me trying to be productive!

Say it ain't so!...

Actually doing something similar, but with a weekday cap of 90 min and weekend caps of no more than 3 hours. Which is a joke, as with the baby. I don't often get it anyway. We'll see how long that lasts.

Ugh, and I get upset if I don't get at least a couple of hours of gaming in a night. I seriously don't know how you guys survive! (But then I bet the old unemployed me probably wouldn't know how I survive.)

Yeah, I'm that unemployed guy right now. Trying to keep busy to better myself and maintain my sanity. Trust me, the kid inside is being a total dick right now.

I cracked when the lady of the house told me to stay up and "blow off some steam". Steam, you say?

Cryax, Kyo, and other goodjers I will be online all day so if we can get together and discuss strategies/help us scrimmage please contact me via steam. If you still want to be on the team, let me know!

The tournament for APL is fast approaching!

More info on tourney:

As many of you know, we had lots of teams sign up last minute(a good thing). So the tournament will run from Jan 12th - Jan 15th, this is how it will work:

Jan 12th @ 1pm EST - Tournament starts, Round 1 & 2 will be played.

Jan 13th @ Anytime** - Round 3 will be played.

Jan 14th @ Anytime** - Round 4 will be played.

Jan 15th time TBA*** - Bronze & Finals.

** You have a 24 hour window to play your match up and report the score to TmT via pm on the APL site.

*** The Finals will have to be planned out by the 2 teams and tell myself or Metamist so we can tweet out streams, time, match up, etc. Also it allows us to "hype" it up

Just one last thing, Make sure you report your scores to TmT on the APL site via pm. To find your opponent make sure to look on the Ladder tab and go under teams.

Enjoy!
TmT

Is there a way to watch the matches?

Sparhawk wrote:

Most of the top level players are going to either stream or post on youtube. I'll post links once they're up.

It sounds like an interesting draft setup. How would we coordinate that for a goodjers tournament?

gravity wrote:

Perhaps it's late as I'm reading this, but I think you may have to elaborate for me. I can imagine using excel/google docs to create randomized draft set up??

Cyrax & Kyo, I also discovered one of the members we are going against is #16 in the WORLD. /gulp.

Lets get some practice matches in!!

I'll be free tonight. Don't know about Fri & Sat. We had a family member die this week, and others are staying at our house, so I'll likely be busy. Might be good on Sunday though.

Is there a good Awesomenauts wiki/thread that goes over stats and such? We need not get too analytical, but it might be useful to see stats rather than, "I think X is better than X."

I'll be in and out, but would love to help you all out with skirmishes.

Hey Cyrax, sorry for your loss. If you're unable to attend the tournament this Saturday let me know. Totally understand. We'll find someone to fill in.

The official Awesomenauts forum is a 'good' source, but after following it for awhile. I find the most vocal in there are mid-low ranked players that talk about the theory of the game rather than applying the concepts.

As such, I follow this guy religiously.

Rarely does he discuss strategy, but you can watch how the top team in the world work as team and make sure their builds mesh well together rather than solo play. Sometimes sacrificing DPS to have something that will complement another teammate. Right now, the meta game is Gnaw and Raelynn so they're changing their group makeup to go against that.

When I watch them, the team rarely breaks away from each other unless for three things.

- Healing
- Upgrading
- Flanking

I've talked to some of the higher ranked players who post on youtube/twitch to do the things you speak of a week ago. One liked the idea so hopefully we'll see that in the future.

If we can go on vent sometime we can discuss strats and try them on practice mode. I have a couple things in mind (way to cheese turrets depending on class, upgrade build out, and map) and a list of classes I've come up with that work well together.

Kyo will remain with voltar/gnaw has his classes. I can go as Raelynn, Coco, Clunk, Leon, Froggy G, Skolldir, Lonestar. I'm practicing with a Yuri aggressive build and 'broken' Vinnie if we want me to roll as a Johnny class. More than likely, I'll stick to the classes I mentioned earlier.

Although it might be rare to see, prepare yourself for these. I've only seen the first done once or twice, never the last link. However, we've never faced players who rank top 20.

Raelynn Cheese

Broken Vinnie

UPDATE: Team ESG just reached out to me and are happy to do some scrimmages between tonight and tomorrow.

If you want to play shortly, checkm-8, I maybe watching TV. I'll be logged onto the Steam mobile app, so hopefully you can contact me through Steam that way without hassle. I'll be back online at 10 EST.

Edit: I meant 11.

Thanks for the update on the scrimmage. Never thought there was more to the game then I initially thought.

Sparhawk wrote:

I think it's just like other MOBAs, RTS like SC2, or even chess. On the surface and to the newly introduced, the game is fun, but if you start to get serious about the game and play against 'higher level' players, there's another layer if you want to enjoy.

Recap on the Awesomenauts Tournament.

Background: We played against the top three team in the world. The team leader is a top 20 player. His teammates were either in League 1 or 2, all fully prestige 10. To give you an idea how much time they've dedicated to the game it takes around a minimum of 1000 hours to fully prestige.

We ran with Clunk, Rayelnn, and Gnaw, they used Clunk, Skolldir, and Lonestar maps were randomized, and we were placed on map 404 (the map where there is only one choke and awkward gravity). Although it was intimidating, during the first match we were able to have a good stalemate until the 6 minute marker. Usually 1-2 deaths aren't bad, but when you are playing against a team that has put in that much time into the game, one death is all they need. That extra solar advantage can be devastating. I believe Gnaw fell first, followed by Clunk, and then me (Rayelnn). My snipe held them back for awhile, but once they took down our turret they had surround advantage and could use Skolldir to throw us into Clunk's explosion. If by any chance we were alive, Lonestar was waiting to throw dynamite. I think the match lasted 16 minutes. We were impressed we lived that long, and I think we managed to get three kills compared to their 10+.

Round two, same map, same characters with the exception of deciding to change out Clunk with Froggy G, hoping we could stun cancel any of Skolldir's throws. It worked to an extent. We managed to take down one turret, but that was after they took down two of ours. We also manged to wipe out their team once. They were impressed and after the match said we weren't that bad of a team. It made taking the 0-2 a little better.

Prior to the match we were expecting Gnaw and Raeylnn because that was the current meta. Unfortunately, over night people were switching to Clunk and Skolldir as the latter has a great early game and capitalize on early solar deaths from the opponent. Even with the losses, it was a great learning experience and the people (although high level) were great sports.

I think running our own GWJ tournament will be no problem. Just need more goodjers to step up! Oh, I also befriended a team which I scrimmage with them on a regular basis. If we include them, we should have 3-4 teams. Probably end of Jan is when I might propose a tourney run.

Cliff Notes: We were swept

Well, it sounds like you guys did your best, and I guess that's all one could hope for when you didn't have me.

Greatly anticipating the friendly tournament. If you need help, feel free to ask, checkm-8. I can't contribute much time, but what I can, I will.

Thanks for the writeup checkm-8! Congrats on doing so well.

I'm going to postpone the Awesomenauts tourney for a few weeks. Some stuff has come up and...we need more goodjers/goodjernauts!

So I was playing in some PUG games yesterday and I joined a game in progress as Voltar with a Skoldir and Yuri. I enter the match at level 12 (on worm map) and the 3 of us proceed to take out the 1st top turret. After that, the Yuri on my team starts typing in all caps in "all" chat how Voltars and Yuris can't be on the same team and how I ruined the game for him by picking Voltar. He then spends the rest of the match sitting in the base typing stuff about how I ruined the match for him. I told him I've played with Yuris before as Voltar and won and he says that it's because the opposing team was terrible. We lose the match.

I press quick match and pick Lonestar, same guy ends up on my team again (as vinnie this time) and just sits in the shop. Other person on my team asks if the guy is afk and then I mention how in the last match vinnie got mad that I picked Voltar when he had Yuri. After I type that, vinnie responds that he's ruining my match like I ruined his. So then the other team wins again. First time I've encountered this kind of behavior in 50+ hours of this game.
