Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

The console button layout was solid considering how well they blended in your standard third-person shooty mechanics with some basic hack n' slash. I remember the PC controls being a bit strange with the trade off of silky smooth frame rate.

X360 gamepad is highly, highly recommended for the PC version. You get the best of both worlds that way. (I'm still amazed how smoothly it runs in 2560x1440 on an iMac.)

Indeed, fun times.
Must play some multiplayer Space Marine so I can roll out the colours again.

Yeah... too bad it's p2p. The lag can be... unholy.

Wow! I guess I'll just apologize and back out now for not wanting these controls in a brawler:

brawler? It's a shooter, and for me all the commands i use in a shooter fell right into place where i normally put them with plenty room to spare. It could be worse it could be like Arma2 where it feels like you're using your whole keyboard.

Yeah that's the downside to the multiplayer otherwise it's a lot of fun. I didn't pick up the dreadnaught or Chaos pack though as I read those maps aren't played often. Bummer..

So I just started this up yesterday, and I have to say - I am shocked this didn't do better. I am about halfway through the campaign and the graphics, story, and gameplay all seem top notch to me. As a big 40k fan, I might be looking through rose-colored glasses, but I think this is a great game.

I felt the same way. The game got middling reviews, but I had a ton of fun with it. I think they do a great job with the theme and the gameplay.

Likewise -- also a 40K fan, but I think they did a fantastic job of simulating the Giant Stompy Religious Fanatic With Chainsaw And Rocket Launcher experience in a broader sense.

I was also happy to see that the multiplayer got a bit of a boost again from the Steam sale -- I hadn't jumped in for a while, but I bought myself the Power Sword during the Steam sale and when I went to try it out, both the traditional Seize Ground mode and Dreadnought Assault were fairly busy.

I really hope Relic lands on their feet after this whole THQ thing. They are a great developer and I love what they have done with the Games Workshop license.

It was fun, but the single player is only 6-8 hours. That is not worth a $60 purchase to me, but I rented and beat it over 3-4 days.

I used to feel that way, but for me now - if i can get an excellent experience in 6-8 hours I feel like I got my money's worth. Especially with the co-op and MP to boost the experience.

I mean, I have bought dinners for for more hoping for 5-7 minutes of enjoyment:)

I've played through the campaign at least three times now -- there's just something oddly soothing and meditative about tearing into a mob of Orks with the chainsword. As a matter of fact, the last time was when I ran out of steam towards the end of the XCOM campaign, and needed something to inspire me to finish purging the filthy xenos. Not even considering multiplayer (and Exterminatus mode is fantastic), I've definitely gotten my pre-order money's worth out of Space Marine.

I like 40k but I don't care a ton for the lore. This game is just fun, the mechanics are good and it just feels great to wreak havoc as a Space Marine.

Mmhmm. It is pretty much just a big dumb action game, but it does feel really good. It's cheesy, but in that endearing 40K way that makes it ok. I had a lot of fun with it for the 6-8 hours it took to complete.

Just played through this and had fun. I want a squad based RPG in this universe.

I went into multiplayer and there are still little Space Marines out there fighting the good fight. It was strangely poetic to see a fight most people had forgotten still raging on a distant alien world.

Squad-based RPG: Dawn of War 2 is pretty darn close. It's still RTS-ish, but far more RPG-flavored than the first Dawn of War was.

Dixie_flatline is totally right, DoW2 is EXACTLY what you're describing.

Many thanks. I shall investigate :).

BioWare Gets Space Marine License from THQ

I'm not sure where they stand on making new games with Games Workshop, but I'd like to assume they wouldn't open their wallet for nothing.

A Dark Heresy 40K RPG could potentially be f*ckin awesome.

The license ending up at Bioware is, perhaps, somewhat poetic: Space Marines are supposed to go die in a galactic hellhole somewhere.

QFT. I could see something really neat happening in Bioware's hands.

Me like!

Crap! Now I'm imagining a sort of WotoR... Now it needs to be made! However, if it's Mass Effect 3: Warhammer edition, they can count me out. >:/

Just a thought, have EA really given up on branding all their studios Bioware now? I think the Mass Effect shooting would be a decent foundation (well, take out the cover) for more SM, so I wonder if it'll be another studio that's not doing Mass Effect/Dragon Age will be given the guts of ME3, told to update it and put a WH40k skin on it.

Having the possibility of new 40k games is really nice. If a sequel to Space Marine is the aim for buying the license then I just hope the multiplayer is overhauled a bit to offer some better maps and reduce the lag.

I love this game. I played through the campaign 3 times, and had fun with multiplayer and exterminatus. That'd be awesome to see a sequel, as long as it's done well.

For someone with such a light-hearted life-loving avatar, you are consistently the perfect picture of pessimism on this forum.

Not that this is a complaint against you. I just find it amusing.

What ranalin said.

This seems the author is getting mixed up by interchanging the Spacemarine TPS from Relic with the War40k Dark Millenium game that was originally tapped to be an MMO and developed by Vigil.

I really hope they do include the other races as playable because otherwise it will be difficult to distinguish itself from the Spacemarine TPS. Well, other than the multiplayer aspect but we are completely in the dark as to the scope of that. The game was originally an mmo but when they are talking about how other races might make it into release, it sounds like the multiplayer scope has been narrowed considerably.

oh...less interested in it now.. I can't imagine a worse thing than a 40K MMORPG. I just can't see it working.

I agree TheGameguru, but for other reasons.

I just don't like MMORPGs. I only glanced at the article but to be honest I didn't expect much to come out of the announcement anyway. I'll still probably look into it based on where the discussion that will go on here, but I won't seek out information.
