Dark Souls Catch-All

Man, I lost 45k souls earlier this morning in the Duke's Archives

Spoiler:

I lost them when I first encountered Seath. Is it possible to beat him at that moment?

Nope.

You should definitely spend things before going into that part.

You can get them back if you play the rest of the area without dying, and unlock the path back up to that room... but that's very unlikely.

I accidentally stepped into the fog and tried to wiggle a Ring of Sacrifice on, but trying to run around and avoid unknown attacks and navigate the inventory do not go well together. Better get used to the thought of collecting a new batch of souls and humanity.

I was thinking I liked the Claymore better, but doing insane things like flattening Black Knights, staggering titanite demons, and cutting the gargoyle tail in one strong attack was too much fun.

Zwei is +5 now, I got the Ring of Favor, Grass Crest Shield (on back, for Stamina regen), and I haven't rang the first bell yet.

Got to Sen's very late last night and it was just like banging my head against a wall. I kept trying to go downstairs for the Lightning Spear.

First time I died by Siggy.
Next time I made it down to the chest, but got hit by those rolling balls.
Next time I died to the first two snakemen.
Next time I died to the first lightning snakeman.
Got back downstairs, the chest monster fell into the ladder hole... tried attacking it down there but died.
Fell off the first walkway and died to the trident guys below.

Decided it was time to quit for the night.

This afternoon starting fresh, I died once to a snakeman somewhere... and then I made it down and got the lightning spear second try. The rest of the map was much smoother, and after maybe 2 more attempts made it to the roof. From up there, I never died. Just farmed some titanite, upgraded some weapons, and beat Iron Golem first try. Now to the fun of Anor Londo.

Forgive the minor conversation derail: La-Mulana (catch-all) is an excellent indie game very much in style of Dark Souls. Until the end of today (PST) the game is pay-what-you-want starting at $1: http://www.playism-games.com/games/l...

I know, I know... Steam sale, and The Pile, and all that.

This game is worth your time and your dollar.

My STR dude went ahead and took down Moonlight Butterfly and grabbed the Elite Knight set, which looks fantastic, thank you. Now looking to ring the first bell.

A while ago I decided to make a STR focused deprived and see how far I could get with one catch - no armour. I'm currently upto S&O and things are actually going ok. I went back and got havels ring though and now I can fast roll with the dragon tooth

Its been said a lot in this thread but it bears repeating: this game is awesome. I know I probably should be playing my NG+ character but I'm having a lot of fun with new builds that keep tempting me away.

New characters have always interested me more than NG+, too.

Ugh... the Capra Demon is not so much fun. I can't kill the dogs before he gets to me once I get up the stairs. I think I'm gonna have to budget in my head at least 20 runs on this guy so that I don't get depressed.

Edit: Yeah, if anyone wants to have a go at helping me with the summon stuff and vent, let me know. I'm not above getting help with this dude. I know he's easy for most of you.

What level are you at TB?

Yeah, I'm not quite sure I totally understand the attraction of NG+. Is it mostly for achievements/trophies or just increased difficulty with a character your familar with?

One way to handle the dogs is to use the spear or the estoc (rapier type weapon found risk free in New Londo ruins) that can strike while your shield is up. You could go up the stairs and roll onto the archway, then turn and stab the following dogs.

If Capra follows you up and prepares to do his lunging attack you could 1) attempt a block if you've the stamina 2) roll backward and gain invincibility frames through the strike or 3) simply drop down and go back up again, Capra takes quite a while to get moving again after dropping down (and is vulnerable to attack in this state too)

I know the encounter seems annoying and cheap but if you can kill the dogs, Capra himself is very manageable.

I recently just got through it myself. I'm more than happy to lend a hand if we can make it happen. I ended up walking into the fight with a firebomb equipped and spamming the item button before rolling out of the way at the last minute. After a couple of tries I got lucky enough that the firebomb killed both dogs in a single throw and then the rest of the fight was a cake walk.

Definitely required for achievements. And nice to get some of those weapons, spells or miracles that require a Boss Soul to get. Or the boss souls that lead to multiple items. You have to finish a chunk of NG+ or even get to NG++ to see everything the game has to offer.

And it is fun getting your build pumped up to 50 INT, 50 STR, or whatever your key stat happens to be, while still building a lot of END and VIT, or even working on your attunement to carry a huge load of spells, miracles, etc.

It's not like the game gets easier. NG+ is a huge jump. You just have more weapons to deal with the more difficult situations that arise.

Thought we just discussed this a day or two ago?

Best strategy is to sprint behind and get to the steps. You can then lock on to a dog, back up the steps, and take them down. When you get all the way to the top with the dogs/boss closing on you, then you just roll left off it. The enemies jump down after you, you run to the base of the stairs, and repeat.

You just run circles around them.

The only hard part is that first run when you enter the fog, dodging all 3 of them to get behind. Once you get them in the little circle loop of the stairs, you should be able to pick them off easily.

Oh, I definitely know the strategies. I just can't get it quite right. I've only tried it 3 times so far. I'm overlevelled I think at 25. Mostly, I'm failing at rolling past the demon initially. I don't get the angle quite right or the dogs get a hit in. I think I'm going to put the game away today and try again tomorrow. I haven't done the firebomb strategy although I know that it's viable. I should be on tomorrow evening starting 6 or 7 PST, if anyone wants to try and make a summon thing work.

I suppose I could ask the following to save me a trip. Is it possible to sprint directly to the stairs with maybe 1 roll or so going to the left of the demon? I read that you're supposed to go around to the right of the demon and then sprint for the stairs. That hasn't really been working for me.

I think tuffalo is on PC, or I'd offer to help.

So, I realized today that the previously mentioned Greatshield of Artorias won't work with the Zweihander, which requires two hands.

I more success going left than I had going right. To the right are a bunch of columns and alcoves that I would usually end up being shoved into and trapped. I was over leveled a bit at 26 (still am) so I had trouble being summoned to help others, but hopefully it will let the two of us hook up.

Kinda depends how things go when you enter. If they've already closed on you then yeah, roll right once, and then sprint forward, and turn left for the steps.

If you have some space on them, it's almost run towards them, then roll right as they try to attack, and like before, sprint around for the stairs.

I did end up doing it with someone this weekend so it wasn't too bad. I made it around behind, although he didn't. But I took out one dog, and he took out the other, and I healed him from the hit he took from Capra, and then we moved into the circling the stairs strategy.

It definitely is easier with a friend but certainly not impossible without. I'm probably way too high now to help on PC though.

I dropped a summon right outside the fog gate and got picked up pretty quickly. That's also where I summoned the person who helped me. Throw down a sign and give it 5 minutes or so? Beating it as a phantom will still give you a lot of confidence for making your own run if you can't find someone to summon yourself.

Sweet! I'll try going left with a roll or two thrown in. All I need is one go where I get a repeatable technique down. Every time I've done it so far, I just get overwhelmed very quickly. At any rate, maybe I'll be able to get you summoned tomorrow, psoplayer. If not, I'm sure I can get it myself eventually.

Edit: Thanks for the advice, Stele! I'll keep that in mind.

I'm just not in the mood today to play Dark Souls, I think. I need more relaxing fare.

Dropped the

Spoiler:

Ceaseless Discharge

in one go today. I think I was seriously over leveled even though getting hit took out half my health in one go.

Well got out of Sen's, damn Anor Londo looks cool.

Apparently I missed a firekeeper soul at some point, because it looks like I had a chance to fortify my estus and I didn't have a soul for it.

So not going to lie I am wiki-ing the game quite a bit but I have had the exception of not looking up a boss fight until I have at least tried it a time or two. I beat the gargoyle on the second attempt without looking, apparently the bigger they are the harder they fall

Also I think the firebomb throwing giant glitched or me or something he attacked me once while I was still in the doorway then fell to his knees and I just R2'd him to death from the doorway he never got up again, I probably had to hit him 15 times. I assume he is supposed to get up?

No it doesn't. Every weapon can be used with one hand. You just need to meet the stat requirements.

Getting back to this tonight. I think I left off with the Bell Gargoyles. Listen for my screams of despair over PSN tonight.

I do have 24 Strength, but I guess the swing is just super unwieldy with one hand.

I think I remember trying the Zweihander once, and that was definitely true. A good way to remedy that is to get good with the jump attack. That's usually very quick even with slow weapons.

Many other big weapons are much easier to use 1h, so just make sure to mess around with them.

I will check them out. It seemed to me on my first playthrough that most of the coolest weapons were Strength weapons.

So on this PC version are any of the mods ok/safe for multiplayer use?

Just about anything other than unlocking the framerate above 30 is safe for multiplayer. See: http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mods/...

The first one is required to apply other mods. The second one comes highly recommended.

What he said. I definitely recommend playing NG+. The challenge is daunting, though not immediately - earlier bosses won't necessarily be too difficult, but getting to near endgame stuff and Manus in the DLC are really something.
