iPad Mini

Movies and books are better on a widescreen device. Some web pages I like reading better in a tall format (such as forums, sites like engadget, gizmodo). I think it's really a matter of preference. The nexus is easier to hold in one hand, though.

It's funny, but I hold both my Kindle and my iPad in landscope mode all of the time. I use a leather case that converts to a stand to read comics and books on the iPad Mini at that orientation and my new Kindle is constantly rotated.

You're weird.

Wasn't the big win that it makes things easier on developers since it runs at the same resolution as the iPad 1 / 2? iOS development can be tricky when you have to support multiple resolutions. So one fewer resolution is better overall.

The principle is sound, but I think the approach is from the wrong direction. The original OS for the Nexus 7 is upscaled from a mobile OS; apps continue to be displayed as if it's a phone, so icons are bigger, loads are faster, and layouts are more or less optimized from a small, handheld perspective. It works for these mini tablets.

The iPad mini is treating itself like a miniaturized iPad, which is sound marketing, but bad layouting. Net browsing display on the mini is too small, especially in portrait mode. The text is barely readable for me, unreadable to many. Icons are occasionally a teeny bit too small for smooth, ergonomic use; a key weakness which goes against traditional Apple strengths. These things are not essential now - I'm fully expecting to get the next iPad mini if it has a Retina display which will mitigate many of these problems, but I do expect them to be fixed with either OS7 or OS8. The mini is too small for iPad sized layouts. That's just the long and short of it.

Apple needs to base it off the iPhone and the iPod Touch, not the iPad.

It's more comfortable. And I'm ergonomically challenged. And I'm weird.

Books might be better but I'd rather not read on my iPad anyway. That would leave only video.

Nah, I'm a landscaper myself except when reading books.

The iPad landscape is fine, and normal. The Kindle book landscaping is the weird part.

How can you charge your Kindle with an iPad charger?

Is that the paperwhite? Because my Kindle Touch sure never tells me how much time I've left in a chapter. Does it actually calculate that based on pages remaining and your average your time per page? That's an awesome feature and shoulda been there all along.

I ended up with a good deal on the mini and I must say, i like it quite a bit. Granted, my normal iPad is a first gen, so this thing feels blazing fast. It's also much nicer to read on as the size seems just right.

Yep, that's the Paperwhite, and it's an awesome feature.
