I'm gonna go out on a limb and say nobody knows because nobody's played it with a female protagonist

If I had to guess I'd say it's better, independent of gender issues. Switching publishers gave them the time and resources needed to hammer out the issues that were keeping it from releasing prior.

Wei is a very strong and likable character, something I find rare for the genre. The women he interacts with in any serious way so far have been maturely written and well acted.

Strong answer, thanks. Was curious, considering the success of the game, how the gender issue still played out in people's minds.

Given how women are treated in Sleepy Dogs, I think it would have been a very different and possibly fascinating experience. These criminal-life open-world games always cast the player as a thug who starts at the bottom and has to climb his way to the top. In that kind of culture, a female would have to fight just as hard to even get to the level of recognition of that initial thug. I think that kind of struggle could make for an excellent story. However, it would not be the story they sought to tell with Sleeping Dogs.

That would be Lucy Lui's story from Kill Bill! And she is in the game! So meta.

I'd play that.

We needs this.

ANyone got the new DLC, how is it? I was left a bit dissapointed after the nightmare dlc since it was so short(but visually gorgeous).

That's.... quite impressive. Did you get an achievment for that?

No. I actually didn't do anything. I took a taxi to the dojo and when I left that was waiting for me. Perhaps it's some kind of Triad warning.

Rolled the credits on this last night. So much awesome but just shy of excellent.
Things that were missing:
Consequences.

Literally the only downside to NOT going all apesh*t is a few less Triad points. I was trying to play it 'clean' so I ended up maxing out the Cop gauge after completing the second case, and missing one level on the Triad gauge after the last mission.
After 20 hours I stealth killed a random patrolling officer... it was my first non-triad/suicidal pedestrian kill. I jumped into the water, hijacked a boat, and after a few seconds everyone had forgotten about me.
I kept finding people that would sell me stuff for my apartments... which doesn't seem to achieve anything.
I explored just about every nook and cranny of the world... not once did I encounter a random gang patrol.

I liked it, but with just a few changes it could have been awesome.

I've had the game hardlock my 360 three times now, after hitting the loading screen that comes after arresting someone via security camera. I've done it twice in the game prior without incident.

I'm going to see if uninstalling it helps...

Edit: well, sometime during the freezing my autosave updated to reflect the completion of the mission. Still, this sucks. I haven't had a game reliably crap out on me like that on a console since Oblivion.

To answer your questions, yes, there are people still trying to drive the ambulance, yes, that's a nice jacket I'm wearing, no, I'm not wearing any pants, and yes, that is blood.

You're not wrong, but I felt that Sleepy Dogs had more consequences than most open world games. If you walk around with a gun in your hands, cops will notice and come after you. Compare that to GTA or Saint's Row, where you can run through the streets with a revving chainsaw or a missile launcher (or, yes, a giant purple dildo) and nobody bats an eye.

Looks like that bystander behind you is appreciating the no pants.

DAYYYYYYUUUM LOOK AT THOSE CHISELED CALVES!

Dude, I get that everywhere I go. It's hard, having such rockin' sexy legs.

Well naturally...You need those for kicking dudes in the damn face.

Ostrich Style!

Some of the technical problems are starting to affect my opinion of the game. I appreciate that they made the console version look as nice as they did, and I still like the narrative and characters (I just finished "The Wedding"), but...

I'm still having the issue where the Xbox hard locks after camera arrests. It still autosaves, but it's still a big deal of a bug. I've had two other bugs resulting in having to reload checkpoints. One, I was in a mission where I had to air-jack a car, but the mechanic to do so never kicked in. The second, I just got stuck while vaulting over an object.

I've heard some people criticize the gunplay. I think that's just a side effect of the hand-to-hand combat being above-average. The gunplay feels fine and the pistols have a great sense of weight.

I don't disagree on that point, but on the flip side... in GTA or Saint's Row, if I'm running around on enemy turf EVENTUALLY someone bats an eye. On the collection side I was extremely disappointed when the enemy gangs respawned around the lock-boxes and security cameras I had already cleared. It felt like a cheap trick to make it seem like the world was hazardous, because if they didn't you would never find gang enemies to fight outside of missions.

One gig patch yesterday, anyone know if there were changes? Or more clothes?

So today I ran into a dude with two arms and one leg, and he was using one of his arms as a leg. Don't smoke, kids.

I read on neogaf that they added support for some of the upcoming story based DLC. One of the developers/community managers posts in their thread fairly regularly.

Just started this last week, and man am I having a blast. The first action hijack I did had me in stitches. The action is so over-the-top-Hong-Kong-cinema style, I LOVE IT!!!

I'm still trying to figure out the whole outfit bonus thing though. It seems like some of the individual pieces will work with different outfits to give different bonuses (i.e. one of the faux Jiggler jerseys will give either a Triad or a melee bonus depending on which shoes/pants you wear them with). And sometimes the little icons are all highlighted but it doesn't register the bonus when I back out of the closet.

Don't lie, that's your dad.

So this is 75% off ($9.99) on steam today. There are about two dozen DLC's and I am scratching my head a bit.

Are there any "cheat" DLCs that make the game way too easy that I should avoid? The descriptions make it kind of hard to tell since I haven't played the game yet and don't know the systems.

bah, double post

I'll blame Windows 8.

I would say avoid anything that gives you extra money, points of any kind (Triad/Police) and Reputation.
That leaves clothes, vehicles, more races and special hand-to-hand moves which I think are ok but not really something I'm interested in here. So to me, the only current DLC that are interesting are the Martial Arts Tournament and Hong Kong Horror DLC.

I've played this to not too long after The Wedding then stopped, waiting for more story DLC to appear before I pick it up again. While I agree with most about the feel of the city, the great hand-to-hand combat, the meaty gunplay and interesting story, I do feel that the open world is quite "empty". I'm actually wishing for more mini-games and side quests that would be unique to the Hong Kong movie setting like a Mahjong mini-game anyone or Joining a Lion Dance trope. And what's up with the romance storylines going nowhere? I heard they were cut for time but what little they left in makes their disappearance even more jarring.

The funny part is, even with you pointing it out, the first thing I notice is your (still) lack of pants.

The Zodiac Tournament DLC is a mere $1.24. It is short, but very entertaining if you enjoy old Kung Fu movies (Enter the Dragon specifically) and the Kung Fu fighting in the game. I got warnings when I tried to go that I should have more upgrades, but with probably 80% of the upgrades in the game, I felt pretty comfortable and didnt have a hard time finishing. It is pretty short, but definitely worth a buck and a quarter.

At the end you unlock a Muay Thai outfit (somehow it's not the Ong Bak costume) and and MMA style. I havent tried either one yet.

Started watching the Total Recall remake and look and behold the actor who plays Weird had a part in it. Pretty strange feeling hearing that voice but seeing a different face.

The title of this game is misleading, I got no sleep last night.

I'd say I'm about 2/3 through the game and I can already say with full authority this is one of my favorite open world games, right behind RDR and GTA San Andreas. I'm really digging the combat system, the unexpectedly amazing soundtrack and the story quite a bit. If I had any gripe it would be the driving physics, I liked GTA 4's approach whereas this feels like Need For Speed on cocaine... or speed I suppose. There is one thing that bugs me, with so much voice talent I would have expected spending more time with their characters. As far as I can tell there is one date mission per female character, and then maybe a main quest related mission that writes them off.

At any rate this has been a quality game for the $10 I spent, I plan on playing a lot more.
