2013 - 12 month pile thread. Hello New Year, good bye pile!

Same. This is my way of picking 12 months of awesome to play through, guaranteed.

Spoiler:

And a guilt trigger mechanism too.

So as of the start of the year, my pile looks like this:

Handheld Pile:

  • Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (DS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • Fluidity: Spin Cycle (3DS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • [color=gray]Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir[/color] (3DS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

Console Pile:

  • [color=gray]Art Style: Rotozoa[/color] (WiiWare) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • [color=gray]Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean[/color] (GameCube) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • Fortune Street (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • [color=gray]The Last Story[/color] (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Monster Hunter Tri (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • [color=gray]Muramasa: The Demon Blade[/color] (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Rune Factory Frontier (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • [color=gray]Tales of Symphonia[/color] (GameCube) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • [color=gray]Xenoblade Chronicles[/color] (Wii) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

2013 Progress:

  • 13 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) [color=gray](7 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))[/color]
  • 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)
  • 1 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/completed.gif)
  • 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/bulletremoved.gif)

My wife and I (but mainly my wife) beat Fortune Street yesterday, so I'm already +1 for the year. My goals for January are to finish Fluidity: Spin Cycle; finish, or at least make a dent in, either Dragon Quest IX or Strange Journey; and put some time into Monster Hunter Tri.

Happy Pile, everyone!

I think it helps you look at your library and say "I'll never play that". It helped me pass my copy of Fallout: New Vegas to my brother in the end, as well as trade in another game or two.

I still have Dragon Age: Awakening and Dragon Age II, though, just in case.

I challenge you to list your pile.

As for this being an intervention, don't tell m0nk3yboy — we don't want him to find out.

Is there any easy way to export your Steam list? I'm not even going to bother worrying about my consoles and iPad.

Truth told, my current pile is only a selection of games as well. Games on Steam or free from PSN+ are not on there intentionally. I'd rather worry about other games first.

I realized this morning that I don't have New Super Mario Bros. 2, Kirby Dream Collection, and Sticker Star on my list. While I don't ever aim to complete everything on the list, 15 "old" games seems like a good target, so I'm having a minor existential crisis trying to figure out if I should bump stuff from the list or just add them anyways. Blargh.

I have enough games already on my list to keep me occupied for more than a year. If I decide that they are not the ones I feel like playing, I have given myself permission to add a different game to the list. I'm just not going to do it until I decide to choose something else.

Potentially. I've been able to login to my steam account via the web, click my icon on the top right, and then to the right under "Edit my profile" there is a "Games (##)" link.

Went in there, scrolled to the bottom and changed "Per Page" from 10 to ALL.

Then just CTRL-A, CTRL-C, drop into your favorite text or spreadsheet editor (make sure to use "Paste Special" and then "Unformatted Text"), and whack away at it.

Simple enough, right?

5. Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition

I Promise, I Promise:

1. I solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.
2. I will not shop for games unless I actually plan to buy something and play it right away.
3. I also pledge to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group and play them all the way through right away.

Normally, I'd make a big post, and try to get alot said. I'm keeping it to the point, and that works with how I'm handling my pile in 2013.

In terms of the pile, I was a very naughty boy last year. Can't even remember if I posted in that thread. I bought a bunch of indie games, and pretty much all the AAA games I wanted, even if most of them were discounted via pre-orders. This year I've relegated myself to only buying the handful of AAA titles in Q1 that I wouldn't want to do without. I've chosen: Tomb Raider, BioShock Infinite, and maybe one more (The Last of Us, South Park, ?). No more game kickstarters either, which really hurts my soul. I'll try and be stringent on new indie releases, but sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants. I actually haven't bought any game since Far Cry 3, and I'm going to try and be mostly celibate until the new consoles roll out.

My backlog/activity structure will work like so:

1. I'm always going to be playing a game aside from the backlog. This happens whether I want it to or not, so I'm just going to accept it and encourage myself to finish it rather than be negative.

2. I'm always going to be playing a casual game, hopefully from the backlog.

3. Every month I'll randomly pick a game, and if I don't like the pick, randomize again. This is my official backlog game for the month, and the one I'll strive to complete.

4. I'm always going to be playing a portable game. If I can get a backlog game in there as well, great, but if not, I'm not going to sweat it.

Right now I'm playing Far Cry 3, Defender's Quest, P4G and Uncharted on Vita, and my backlog has chosen Costume Quest, which I almost finished a short while ago. Fitting, me thinks.

Wait, wut?...

Sadly, this did slow me down... And yet the pile, it grows.

EDIT:
Just added 52 games to my iOS Backloggery, and there wil be more later. I've decided to add a few titles a night until I am caught up. I have to stop looking in the iPad thread... That 52 isn't even all of them, it's just the ones I know I want to play, but aren't installed (viewed through iTunes). I haven't even looked on the actual iPad yet?!?!?

Ok, so how does this work? I have to complete the whole game? Does that include side quests and stuff ( not that I can usually resist those...EGADD permiates to all areas of gaming...and more ).

Once I commit myself, will someone come to my house and chop off my little pinky if I don't comply? ( name the movie )

I believe we all consider a game finished and off the pile once the credits roll. So I was done Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, for example, a couple hours in, but kept playing anyway because it was so damn good.

Super Mario 3D Land has an extra world, but you can see the credits roll without playing that additional world if you'd like. That's where the optional 100% completion comes in. So "finished" means "credits rolled", "completed" means "Got/saw everything there is in the game."

If you don't finish a game, that's mostly on you. However, if you don't finish it because you're not really having fun, then get rid of it. The pile should not be a burden, it should be an organization structure to help you play the backlog of games you own.

m0nk3yboy wrote:

So it seems you get points on Backloggery's Multitap scoreboard which partly depend on having a list of at least 100 games.

Score = % Finished + % Completed + 1pt per game (up to 100)

This formula was designed to reward those with a well-maintained backlog while preventing those with small collections from easily dominating the charts. The highest possible score is 300.

So if I want to score-chase, I need to add at least a few more games (and then finish them). And not use "null" to mean "not playing right now", but use it to mean "don't count this as a game, because I am always playing it". I also need to resign myself to the fact that I will get very few points for "completing" a game, since I am not usually one to try to 100% everything, since that takes the game out of fun and into frustrating. But maybe I can catch up to, oh, stevenmack.

I don't put iOS games on my Backloggery until I finish them because it would be ridiculous. And depressing.

My pile is way too big right now. I think I want to go back and finish the Megaten games I own in 2013.

It took less than 12 hours to buy a game after I posted. In my defense, Hotline Miami was only $5. Not going to play it for a bit though, that would be irresponsible.

Whatever lets you rationalize your decisions/willpower

Ok, I think I need help, and need a crash-course on how to subscribe to this pile reduction project.

Someone care to take the time to answer all my questions? (Over IM or vent) Just Pm me I guess.

You can ask in thread. I don't think any one would mind. You can pm me if you'd prefer that though.

Step one is probably to create a backloggery account and start entering your games. Most of accounts are listed in the op so add us to your friends list ( which they call multitap )

I'd like to take part in this and battle against my ever-increasing pile. I'll take the advice above and get started on entering my woe into backloggery.

So, I added thirteen games and four DLC items during the Steam sale. However, I did beat Faerie Solitaire. One step forward, 16 steps back?

Garden Ninja, I love how you formatted your list, but like S0lidarity says that's too much work for me!!
Edit: Oh wait, there's a BBcode?!?! Awesome!!
If you need help culling your pile, I simply must recommend you give Bastion a try. It's a beautiful game and not that long, I must've finished it in about 10 or 11 hours, tops. I started the New Game Plus mode, but never finished it, but a first playthrough is very satisfying in and of itself.

  • Bioshock IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - About 6 or 8 hours in, I guess. Kinda stalled, for some reason. Would like to finish it though
  • Fallout 3 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Didn't even make it out of the vault, not sure why. Should go back though, but nervous about seeing my hometown in ruins

I think it's becoming more and more apparent that I need help. Or an extended paid vacation. Away from husband and child.

Sounds about right to me, Katy!

Okay, now that the Steam sale is over and done with, the time has come to assess the damage and make some new year resolution to cull this leviathan of a backlog. Instead of ordering my list by system, I'm going to be ordering them by "priorities", as I'm going to try to make a point of playing gifts before others. Gifts before other games, shorter games before longer ones, and above all, fun trumps everything else. If after an hour or so, if I'm not having fun, then you're out. Simple as that. Those are the rules I intend to live by in 2013 when it comes to gaming. I will participate in the monthly thread and try to set reasonable goals.

My list:

Gifts:

  • Cave Story+ IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Shank 2 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Snapshot IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Closure IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - About to give up on it, though, because of technical issues
  • Dungeon Defenders IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Offspring Fling IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Currently working on it
  • The Basement Collection IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

  • Dead Space IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Started playing it, but maybe I'm too much of a wuss for this game
  • Dead Space 2 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Deus Ex: GOTY IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

Games I bought (or intend to buy) in 2013:

  • StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif) - I already pre-ordered. Maybe I shouldn't have when I see my backlog.
  • Dishonored IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif) - Everyone says it's great. Will have to wait until I update my rig though, my current rig is 3 or 4 years old, and wouldn't be able to run it.
  • Assassin's Creed 3 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif) - Maybe. We'll see. If it's on sale and the price has really, really dropped.

Games I bought in 2012:

  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • Dark Souls: Prepare to Die IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • The Witcher 2 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) Barely passed the prologue, not sure what happened, I love the first one. Should give it another shot now that the EE is out.

Games I bought in 2011 and beyond:

  • Bioshock IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Probably played a third. I like it, I like the universe, why didn't I finish it?
  • Bioshock 2 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif) - Waiting to finish Bioshock first.
  • Dead Rising 2 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

Yeah, I think this qualifies as "drowning in the pile" alright. Thank goodness I'm in a safe place here.

I'll skim through tonight (about +6 hours from the time I post this) and key in our new "Band of Backloggers" that I've missed so far.

Welcome aboard everyone!

Don't have time for a big post, but I like Cyrax's points. I will be keeping a list I intend to focus on, and probably posting it when I get back to reorganizing it.

I have one 2013 purchase and I'm calling it my Horizons Broadening Project for the year and can already claim it as a huge success. I bought Dark Souls on January 2 via Steam thanks to some Steam gift cards from Christmas. I had waffled seeing in a few other places / times on sale. I really didn't know if I could put up with tons of deaths and reigning in my usual rush-in-sword-swinging play style. In those 5 days, I've put in over 22hrs (~4.5hrs/day). I love this game and even considering what else I started playing since my birthday in December, it's already a very strong personal GotY contender. I consider my horizons broadened.

I might make additions to my list. I'd like to go back and officially play through Final Fantasy Tactics and EarthBound again some time this year, but I'll have to do it in a month there won't be many new things coming out (that I'll be buying). I was going to do it February, but that's when games like Aliens: Colonial Marines releases. Plus, I'd like some time to polish off Borderlands 2, Resident Evil 6, Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed 3.

But, I have made the decision that March is going to be Indie Month in honor of PAX East, and to get me a bit more fired up for the Indie scene there. So I'll be playing through Penny Arcade Ep. 3 and any other Zeboyd games I can manage I got on Steam, Outland, Double Dragon Neon (if it counts as Indie), MAYBE Shank 2, Dishwasher Dead Samurai 2, Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment, and maybe picking up some games I missed like Journey and Iron Brigade. Depends on how things go.

If I can I'd like to make that an annual thing as well. For example I have a friend that dedicates every February to playing through the Suikoden franchise (he has an amazing amount of free time that I am envious of).

Dark Souls has also displaced my whole pile. I don't even care, it's too much fun.

I may start adding stuff to backloggery. I guess that would be the first step, admitting I have a problem
