GWJ Ventrilo Server FAQ

Female DoggoCakeMcrabbypants is my sister so if you see her on vent she isn't an imposter. I will encourage her to make a GWJ account.

She sounds... friendly?

I just went to the web control interface and did a reboot. It said it had been running since July 2012. I haven't been on the server myself in quite a while, but if issues are continuing to occur, I can get in touch with Darkstar and see if it can't be resolved.

Not that anyone used it, but I should note that the Mumble server listed in the OP is long gone. You should remove that info.

thanks NSMike... updated the post.

Has the password changed? Maybe that's it.

Edit: Or maybe I'm an admin? Instead of using my old "duckilama" user, I made a new one duckilamaGWJ and was able to connect. So, am I an admin? How do I find out my admin password, if so?

Only way I know is for another admin to change it and pm you the new one. I didn't chime in earlier because I'm not near a computer with Vent today.

So, I was trying to set up my ventrilo, but I keep getting that I can't connect.

Connected to server but unable to authenticate your login name and password...

I don't know if I'm doing it wrong(I did what the OP says) or if the server's down.
Anyone able to verify it's up?

Went through old PMs. Figured it out. All good. Move along.

Hey, aren't we about due to make donations to fund the server again? Wasn't it going to run out in February sometime?

I have paged TheWalt for the answer, Malor.

Indeed it does appear to be donation drive time. Bill is $130 due Feb 11th. Any Clanpay donations are much appreciated. I'm on my cell right now, but I believe the Clanpay info is in the main post? I'll update later from my computer, as I know goodjers are way generous and I don't want 3 years of payments sitting in the Clanpay account when they could be earning you guys interest. Thanks in advance for the support.

Clan Pay info is indeed in the OP.

Here is the link to the Clanpay system:
https://clanpay.darkstarllc.com/donate.php?OTIxMw==

As you'll notice, they have some pretty stiff terms of service (disputes, etc), which is why I want to keep the balance as close to zero as possible, so I'll post updates periodically as we approach the bill due date.

Minimum donation (to get the full effect and avoid surcharges listed in the ToS) is $5, and I'd suggest a maximum donation of $25 (as many many people make use of the goodjer Ventrilo service).

We're currently $107.90 away from reaching our target fundraising for the Feb. 2013- Feb. 2014 ventrilo year.

Thanks everybody!

The account holder has the option of requiring a minimum contribution of $5.00 USD or accepting a service fee of $0.50 USD for each contribution under $5.00.

Crap! Maybe it wasn't a good idea to jokingly donate a nickel 200 times.

$97.90 left to go.

A nefarious amount was donated by me.

Thanks garion!

That and other donations continue to roll in.

The total has dropped to $53.16 remaining.

Although I use it rarely I've dropped a drop into the bucket.
Hurrah!

Same here--I haven't used the vent server in awhile, but still donating just to keep it up and running

Update: $29.24 left, get your donation in quick or you'll miss out! ;).

You guys are great.

Already paid up? Any chance of moving to another provider, if not? The current server has been mighty unreliable for the past several months.

As I'm not a heavy user of Ventrilo anymore, I'd need more data. I heard about an issue on December 17th, but from what I can see, the server has been up ever since I remotely reset it.

Darkstar Service Guarantees wrote:

DarkStar makes the following guarantees for your Ventrilo Server.

99.9% Uptime SLA on actual Ventrilo Service.
Excludes server maintenance.
Excludes the stopping of your server, or problems created by the server owner. (IE. configuration errors)
Excludes locations where we do not have control in the facility or areas with a poor infrastructure.
Includes the ability to create and use a temporary server should there be an extended issue at a particular DataCenter. (the "Server Redundancy" link in your server management area)

Refund policy

With the Server Redundancy feature added, there is never a reason that client would not be able to have service, however, if for some unforeseen reason our guarantee cannot be met, you may request a refund. Please note that our refund policy states that you must work to resolve the issue. As such -- we ask that you first try another location, or let us resolve the problem before a refund will be granted. Should we not be able to fix the issue, and we still fail to meet our up-time guarantee -- we will grant the refund request.
Refunds are not offered on specials.

If there is someone who can document issues with the server, I can bring it to Darkstar's attention and get a resolution, or even transfer the account to someone else (who's a little more active on Ventrilo) if need be.

$5 until funding target is met. You guys are awesome.

Cathadan pimped it in the LoL thread and we've been rallying to get some money in. The best marketing tactic is probably to post the fundraising info in the threads for games that get heavy vent use like League of Legends, TF2, and whatever else GWJ people play. I suspect most people don't check this thread after they get the server info.

Regardless, this community came through because Gamers With Jobs are awesome. Good work TheWalt.

Just put in my $5. Did we make it?!

Yeah, good work TheWalt. Thanks for years of service.

As far as games go, LoL and WoW seem two of the most used games. TF2 uses built in Steam chat. But someone made a thread in MMORPG forum and some monies are coming in from there.

FUNDING TARGET HAS BEEN MET!!! WOOHOO! Thanks for the support!

I purposefully have tried to keep the marketing tactic lowkey BECAUSE this community is so generous. It doesn't really do anyone a service to have lots of money sitting idle in the ClanPay account for 3 years (when I first asked for contributions, I think back in '10, it was enough to last us through 2012).

As far as service goes, I can always add more admins and/or create some sub-users to be able to reset the servers if we have outages. This thread is the place to bring it to peoples attention. Thanks Goodjers!

I'll start documenting when it happens. It's not that the server is down...it's that the route to it is highly unreliable. 90% of the people will be constantly getting dropped while one or two remain connected.

Okay that does suck. Documentation is the best way to start a remedy. Thanks!

This is fantastic! I feel a little grubby for not having donated, at this time.

Is there a protocol of sorts? For example, I would assume (hopefully correctly) that 'Single Player Coffee Shop' is channel for those who are playing through a campaign mode/story mode in one game or another and wish to converse sporadically while doing so.

Gamer A: "I just put a cannibal to the sword, in The Witcher!"
Gamer B: "Great! I'm still on that same level of Orcs Must Die! trying to five star it."
Gamer A: "Man, that was two hours ago."
Gamer B: "Oh! So that's why the wife is giving me evils. I told her one more go, just 15 more minutes." *face palm*
Gamer A: "She'll forgive you in the morning! Let's go on Left 4 Dead until then!"

What about multiplayer games that require more frequent chatter, yet do not have a dedicated channel? Is it okay to select an empty channel that is unlikely to see a sudden increase in popularity, such as 'Boardgames' which has three sub-channels. Perhaps that is what they are for?

My name is RnRClown, on Ventrilo, by the way. I do not know why I choose a different tag for this fine forum as my PSN, Steam, and Ventrilo all match up. I just felt like a change, and chaotic good used to be my favorite alignment choice in Baldur's Gate, while clown has always been an online handle since I was part of a Def Leppard forum back in the day. Mashed them together and got this!

Everything you mentioned sounds right on.
