Borderlands 2 Catch-All

I thought Tiny Tina hilarious, but it has almost nothing to do with what she says but the silly delivery.

Laughing at a funny voice isn't the most highbrow of humor, but hey, it's Borderlands :p

Well, the one thing I'll give this game is that the characters sort of stand out better than previously. My friend kept talking to me about how evidently all these characters are related to Moxxi and such, and when he said "Scooter" I said "Who?"

I hope that his response was, 'This is where the cars live. Getchu One!'

I like Tina because of her absurdity; I thought she fit right into the Borderlands world.

Spoiler:

I also really appreciated the rest of her story that comes through later on through audio logs (in the Preserve, IIRC). I've said it before - hearing those changed my perception of her and feelings towards her, in the same way that hearing some of Tannis' pre-crazy logs changed the way I see her. I think they did a really nice job all through the Borderlands universe of introducing off-the-wall characters and putting in little bits of backstory that, if found, turn them into badly broken people instead of wacky cartoon characters.

Or if she is, then she is way off the mark of my brand of humor. Then again, nothing in Borderlands is really laugh-out-loud funny to me anyway.

I get that humor is the most subjective to all things, but I've heard way too many people talk up Tiny Tina. I've heard about Tiny Tina the most of any NPC. And she is, quite frankly, boring and on occasion just plain annoying.

I'm going to say it's a brand of humor thing, because Borderlands is really laugh-out-loud funny to me, frequently.

I agree with cces, and I find Borderlands to be pretty damn funny. I find it interesting that we are living in an time where a comment like "Man, that last level of the game was a Female Doggo" can get you called a misogynist, but the quasi-racist, wigger dialog of Tiny Tina gets applauded.

I do think she is an interesting character, especially in light of the info that comes out of the echos that Chumpy talks about in his spoiler, but her dialog is still cringeworthy.

white girls talk about badonkadonks and things being crunk is ironically amusing or some crap.

"Badonkadonks" is a word that actually exists outside of Borderlands? Huh.

Yeah, I love how they put deeper back stories and explanations into the game for those who want to explore them. I also like how they don't spell them out for you explicitly and let you read in-between the lines to form the bigger picture.

It is relevant where you live.
I live a couple of miles from downtown Oakland and have done so for the last 8 years. It is safe to say that youths of all ethnicities use the same "ghetto talk" that Tiny Tina speaks around here. So what seems like an isolated racist portrayal is so commonplace here that no one can be bothered to even shrug.

Well, you're not a psychologically damaged tween girl in a fictional wasteland where almost everything is being played up in an absurd manner for laughs. Mr. Shank's use of that word in:

Spoiler:

the EnGORGE! commercial where he says "Yeah, so this sh*t is tits, guys. You should see what my Female Doggo thinks of me now"

was applauded, so.

dunno if this has already been mentioned, but in a reddit AMA, Anthony Burch mentioned an interesting Tiny Tina scene that got cut (spoilers, I guess).

Ash may be talented enough but I'm not sure her brother, the writer, is I liked Tiny Tina for the most part even though I found every third line to be somewhat trite and only maybe every third joke funny. I actually liked Tannis's brand of insanity a lot more. But yes the big secret of Pandora is that everybody on it is insane in their own little (or huge in some cases) way.

How much was written by her brother? I heard it was just a single quest, and then I've heard he wrote the game.

He's lead writer, I believe. From an interview, he divulges that he personally wrote a number of quests, but he didn't personally write everything. He's got a team working for him, of course.

It was my understanding that he was lead as well and possibly the only fulltime writer on staff for this game. Can't remember where I heard that second part and it may not be factual.

He was recognized as one of the year's "30 under 30" for his contributions, so I'm guessing he wrote more than a single quest.

I get the feeling that Ashley wrote Tina's dialog herself, which also may be partially to blame for its incongruity.

Actually I know he wrote it. He said he wrote the part with his girlfriend/wife/whatever-she-is the other Ashley from Hey Ash in mind for the character voice but his sister ended up getting the part.

Hmm. Well, there you go.

Yeah, I get context (believe me, I've lived in Brooklyn the last 12 years where white hipsters call each other n***a), but with that logic, a middle class white guy from Phoenix writing a game for a Dallas based company whose last release was Duke Nukem Forever doesn't really bode well for racial sensitivity. On top of that, Anthony Burch openly admits that he got 'the hip-hop weirdness' from a white female friend of theirs, and it just starts to reek of tourism.

Here is the relevant post from that reddit thread on this topic:

And just to reiterate:

Mulling this over last night, I think what rubs me wrong about her character isn't any possible perceived racial insensitivity, but just how corny it comes off. Having been a hip hop DJ for ~18 years, it was always the white guys trying really hard to fit in by 'acting black' that came off as the least sincere, and the most ridiculous.

I see what you are saying but do you think it is any worse/awkward than some teenager trying to emulate Beiber or One Direction or any of the emo wannabe crap or Michael Jackson or back in the day New Kids on the Block or Milli Vanilli or anything else we thought was so cool we had to be like it no matter what society at large felt about it.

I'll also speak truthful that even though I associate such phrases with "ghetto", I didn't really attach it to a color. I found out what "crunk" means from a white friend. At this point that sort of speech that people traditionally have referred to as black slang or whatnot (not quite ebonics but still related to that color) just seems like MTV-talk to me.

Are you part of the demographic of MTV? If yes, then you talk like this and sound like an idiot.

EDIT: Actually I think I did make that racial connection as reading back I specifically said "think white girls saying stuff like...". But that just seems normal these days due to everything I said above.

Bah, this could easily get too far into P&C territory.

Gearbox is celebrating all the awards BL2 picked up.

Thing is, none of this would be possible without awesome and passionate fans like you supporting us every step of the way. So while we're celebrating here, we want to give you a reason to celebrate as well -- below are some very special SHiFT codes for Borderlands 2 that'll give you five Golden Keys!

PC / Mac Borderlands 2 SHiFT Code: K3K33-3W9JT-6XJJT-TB3JB-HWZZF
Xbox 360 Borderlands 2 SHiFT Code: WBWJ3-JHKSK-ZHXT6-CRTJT-BW59W
PlayStation 3 Borderlands 2 SHiFT Code: WBK3B-FKWCT-KWKWB-SJWTB-XCZK3

Not sure if/when they expire.

Still works as of this post. Gave me 5 keys. Yay.

Still works! 5 Keys! Woohoo!

If you like shotguns, you should be out collecting them now.

Basically for the next 24 hours or so, the overall rarity level of shotguns should be higher than normal, according to the Devs' forum posts.

Wonder if this will increase the chances of a Conference Call dropping for me finally.

I was reading the gearbox forums earlier today to see what scuttlebutt there was, and one guy reported getting 2 conference calls from the warrior. Another said he had run Pete the Invincible 10 times and not a single white shotty dropped. Only greens and blues.

For today, it looks like grenades have the rarity increase.

Tried to solo run the way to the bunker prelevel 50 last night... Gonna have to respect and give it another go.

Final Day is that for Sniper Rifles. Happy Hunting!

I got the same error.

I was able to redeem it Friday night, but maybe it expired? Another friend said he couldn't redeem it Saturday morning.

It's par for the course for Twitter keys to expire after a few hours. These most recent ones have been the exceptions.
