GWJ 500 Mile Run Club 2014

Just bought a Balaclava to help with the cold running. Hopefully people wont think I am running away from a robbery or have ninja stars in my pocket

This is my go-to for cold weather running.

I warm up once I'm running, but if my ears get cold, they hurt. This guy has gotten me through winter rides and runs a bunch of times.

1.5 miles down over lunch. I will keep adding to the total!

Jonman, if that is the only thing you wear while running in cold weather, you are a beast!

GWJ 500 Mile Run Club in 2013 Google Spread sheet is here!

Just enter your name and the subtraction and graph formulas are already inserted. If anyone is really good a spreadsheets feel free to spruce it up. I suck at it.

Lets have fun and get in shape!

Nice job! Updated the initial thread post and title.

Are you me in the future?

Yes.

We should really have a chat about that thing you're going to do later this year. It doesn't end up how you think it's going to.

Sweet, I don't have to make the spreadsheet tonight.

I'll join. I'm getting back into shape after some events that kept me sidelined for the last couple of months of 2012 (new baby!) but I've recovered enough to just be starting running again.

This is totally, totally off-topic, but I just wanted to say that I think my avatar worships your avatar...

Well, got my first run in for the year. 497.92 miles left to go!

I'm definitely out of shape, so it's good that I'm doing this.

I added to the list. Tonight I am playing raquetball, I am going to wear a pedometer to gauge the distance.

Great idea! Although, you won't be getting great returns on effort vs mileage.

Considering I have not won a single game in 2 months, I am not going to argue with you.

I was just saying that racquetball is hard, especially for the amount of steps you take. I'm not sure if I implied anything else. I didn't mean to, so I figured I should clarify.

It is very hard, and I was not reading anything into what you said.

As an update for an hour, which is 3 games I ran 2.5 miles according to my Ipod pedometer. Also, I managed to finally win one. And for the first time in months neither I nor my Buddy were hit with a shot. We had some great bruises going into December.

I wanted to ask something as well. Come spring, my wife wants to start biking once or twice a week. For my own challenge I had planned on halving the distance as my miles run. So a 10 mile bike ride = 5 miles ran. Is that cheating?

As far as I'm concerned, that kind of stuff is cool. I don't know how everyone else feels. I think it's more of a personal goal thing, however, it's mostly nice to have this so that people can encourage each other.

I did edit the spreadsheet a little bit so that it shows a "GWJ Collective Miles Ran". I think that might be a fun number. Feel free to delete it or improve on it.

That's fine by me too. Anything that encourages people to just get out and exercise.

Is anyone else using RunKeeper? If so, what's your name on there? Mine is Scott Boeckmann. Feel free to send me a friend invite.

Cheating, schmeating. It's not like there's prize money at stake here - do whatever works to motivate you man.

That said, I reckon you need to use a higher factor than 2. I cruise on a bike at 18mph. I cruise while running at 6mph. A 20 mile run is at least as exhausting than a 60 mile ride, if not more so.

3, in this case, seems to be the magic number.

I was gonna mention that he could check a general calories burned chart to get an idea. Obviously, it isn't really important. I suppose that chart might be handy for others if they want to use a similar strategy.

500 seems a lot for me to run as a fair weather runner in Minnesota but if I combine winter bike riding...I'll give it a shot and start keeping track. It is a good motivator if nothing else.

Well, turns out I have tendonitis in my ankle. It's been bugging me on and off for a few weeks, and I noticed it get aggravated as I started running again. Went to see the podiatrist yesterday and he recommended that I should probably still be fine for the marathon, but that I should stick to non-impact workouts for a couple weeks, then start adding running in slowly again. I have some concerns that I'm not going to be able to build enough mileage by marathon time (mid April), but I'm going to give it a go. Swapping all my runs out for elliptical work for the next couple of weeks, then will start dropping in small runs every couple of days and see how it goes.

He also recommended orthotics as an option to pursue if it doesn't clear itself up. Anyone have any experience with these as runners?

Seems like the only way is through Facebook.

If biking and racquetball counts then so does walking.

Yup! It even says running or walking on the spreadsheet.

Ok, I’ll be That Guy and respectfully speak my mind: I thought this was the “Run 500 miles” challenge, not the “let’s do more exercise challenge”. My own interpretation was that it wasn’t about including activities other than running (I walk the dogs, bike, swim, and all that), it was about making the commitment to lacing up the running shoes even when it was cold out, wasn’t convenient, or generally got in the way. That’s in addition to regular life and all the incidental exercise that occurs along the way.

I’m all for exercise! And being fit! And being out and about! And yes, there’s no money involved and it’s all for our own personal gain etc. It seemed pretty straightforward to me, though: at the end of 2013 I either ran 500 miles or I didn’t, without temperature modifiers, activity multipliers, and so forth. That’s how I’ll be looking at it. Everyone else is free to do what they want, of course. Perhaps we can make notes about who made 500 miles via running only?

The note idea sounds good! I'm only counting running for myself, too. My real goal is probably 1500 miles. I like using this as a way to keep track and also have a nice fall back goal if I get injured or something.

So Michael, my boots of +2 speed are out?
