FTL

Do these occasionally give a positive outcome, perhaps with different crew or upgrades to give 'blue' actions

These do have positive outcomes; I think I've only lost one guy to spiders, and maybe one to fire. Normally things go well and I get a nice reward.

So it's random then? Sometimes it will be positive and sometime not so?

Really enjoying this so far. I've played 2 games and lost them both. I got an Engi ship now, but will probably stick with the first ship a bit longer. So how do you unlock the ships anyway, just get to more zones?

Taking regular (non-blue) choices is random. Blue choices seem to always end up positive. That's why it's good to upgrade systems to level 2 at least, and try to have multiple races of crew aboard, for more and more blue options.

If you click "List" in the hangar, you can hover over the ships and see how to unlock them.

It's worth noting that blue choices are always positive BUT the outcome may not directly lead to a benefit/be free of danger.

I know of at least one instance where picking the blue choice will put you in a fight (where you could possibly gain scrap and salvage), whereas taking the only other choice in that encounter results in you leaving with nothing happening.

Cool, good to know, thanks all!

Blue choices also may give lesser rewards than non-blue choices (example: enabling you to avoid fights). In general they will never screw you over but you still need to consider whether the other options might be more beneficial.

Is that really in the spirit of the game?...

A little late to this, but seeing as I just lost horribly in a sector 2 ion storm nebula where an automated scout was able to power his ion cannon, missile launcher, shield, anti-ship drone AND evade 2 of my missiles in a row (I was able to power only 1 weapon and choose between engines and shield) I'd say that every exploit I can find other than outright using cheat codes is a fair game.
Damn that guy pissed me off.

Yesh, unlocked my first ship and also unlocked a few achievements (I wonder why they didn't integrate achievements with steam though)

Agreed! It's weird that they have all those neat little achievements, and they aren't integrated with Steam. Wonder why that is... Must be some sort of technical mumbo jumbo...

This is the only game where I`m interesting in achievements. They're real challenges and might force you to play in certain ways if you had that cheevo in mind. Plus, unlocks!

Well after a few really crap runs, I've managed to get a decent Engi setup happening. Still early in sector 3, but I have 6 crew. 1 is fully trained in weapons, another level 2 in shields, a third, almost level 2 in pilot and a fourth in the engine room.

Number 5 and 6 (two rocks) are my boarding party. Wow. It's awesome. My elite weapons guy just keeps their weapons disabled while I beam over there and kill the crew. The only problem is when they have a healing room on their ship. I've gotta drop the shields a level and activate the second heavy ion to take out their med bay.

Still, an interesting strategy that's working well for me. I've noticed that if they surrender and give you stuff, take it. Every time I haven't taken it and killed the crew, I always end up with less than what they offered me.

I've noticed the opposite. I always use the starter ship though as I never seem to use the ion cannon correctly.

I'd highly recommend for anyone who played FTL to install that mod.

What is FTL Infinite Space?
The universe is vast. With FTL Infinite Space you can explore the universe to your hearts content, or till you blow your ship to bits. Infinite Space will jump you from sector to sector, while you search for ancient powerful artifacts, and advanced technology to enhance your ships capabilities. Learn when to fight, and when to run. Dominate or be destroyed.

VERY fun

Quoting so it's a linky

Holy crap! A mod that eliminates the end-boss and doesn't gimp the experience in some other way? I'll totally try that.

My god, this game is good!!!! Do I totally suck? I haven't unlocked anymore ships yet.

1st one most people get is the Engi ship for making it to sector 5.

And that's also one of the best ships to beat the game with. So that helps, once you start getting close to winning you get a ship to push you over the top.

Yeah, well I hate this game. Well I love it, but I hate it. I couldn't sleep last night because I was going over strategies with my boarding party and ion weapons. Stupid game.

It's also eating all my gaming time. Like all of it. Stupid addictive game.

I probably should mention that I also loaded it up while eating breakfast this morning before leaving for work. Safe to say, I left 30 mins later than I normally do. Good thing traffic isn't as bad since most people are still on holidays.

Yeah it's that kind of game.

Seriously Steam reports 60 hours, and I didn't get it until it was on Thanksgiving sale for $6.

Thankfully, I'm only at 5 hours. But I can see that going to grow.

I really should be learning Sins of a Solar Empire or something, but geeze this is fun. Also, just convinced my friend to buy it from the developers site. Spread the love/hate :p

Ok, so I got the engi ship.

f*ck boarding parties.. seriously.

Uhh 228 hours here...

128 here.

Wait -- don't you have like 3,278 hours in PlanetSide 2? When do you sleep? =)

I don't know if I like this game; it always takes a lot longer than I think it has, so I'm tired a lot these days...

Had a rough run last night where I lost 5 guys on boarding parties. First was my Mantid Boarding Party of Doom, where I forgot to take my laser off of autofire. After that, it was discovering that the hotkey for teleporting guys to a ship and the hotkey for teleporting guys from a ship are different. Then it was the flagship teleporting away with one of my guys still on board. *sigh*

Guess I'll have to try again tonight!

Am I just dense or something? I can't seem to upgrade my ship in time to really be worth anything in later sectors. The ONE time I made it to the enemy flagship I had a defense drone and 2 puny lasers, and that was only because I got lucky with random events. To say that didn't go well would be an understatement.

I'm always skirting the edge of the safe zone with the incoming enemy trying to hit as many areas as possible, but even then the amount of scrap I manage to get goes into repairing my hull or upgrading systems, or fuel. I never seem to have enough scrap to purchase the drone controls I desperately need, much less better weapons.

and yes this is on the you die all the time setting of "easy."

Well beat my first easy game. Steam says 10 hours. Now on to normal.

Spoiler:

I managed to unlock the stealth ship too. Not sure if it's any good. I had my engi ship at a good spec I think. I had 2 Ion Blast II, a Heavy Laser II but most of my victories came from my two Rock boarding party that went to town on the enemy crew while my ion blasters kept their weapons offline.

That last fight was a really tough one my strategy up to that point was really different than what was needed to actually beat the F$#@er. Still, being able to teleport into the weapon that was firing those 3 missiles and take it out was very helpful. I only realised which one was firing the missiles after a while though, so I got pounded quite a lot.

Still, I won even if it was on easy, I'm still happy I won.

If you are using the starting ship then don't go for drones... it's too expensive unless you get really lucky with drones being given to you and even then getting the system and the upgrades to make it worth while are still expensive and a waste of power. Try to get your shields up to 2 at the beginning then go for more weapons... an extra set of lasers and maybe a bomb of some sort.... then third layer of shields.... make sure you have crew for the 4 main systems.... I haven't beat it yet though so maybe I'm doing it wrong.
