Nier Catch-All

Done with playthrough 2. One more to go!

Just saw the credits roll on ending A and, well, I got a little teary eyed. Couldn't help but think of my own daughter. I'll be tying up the other three endings in the week or two to come, but man does this game tug at the heartstrings.

Spoiler:

Emil's death was pretty well done, personally. Especially how the voice actor speaks "I don't want to die" right at the end.

I think the bittersweet tone of the story may have made me reluctant to finish my playthrough for a while there. What a trip.

Enjoy going through ending B; it is incredible the whole way through. I still have to go through ending C. I'm putting the game down for awhile. I'm sorta putting it in the wine cellar to enjoy at a later date.

You're only half way there, and it's an awesome journey. Even with my pile as large as it is, I really want to replay this game this year. So much awesome to be had.

I love the fact that this thread, for a game ignored by the world at large, is still going strong. I shall make a single resolution this year, and that will be to play through Nier. I got beyond the half way point before something distracted me, and this thread keeps prodding me to get back to it.

Yeah, same here. Except I think I sold it.

Oh well, good reason to get it for PS3 and get all the trophies on there, as well.

I completely concur.

I finally started the game up over this past weekend, played through the prologue and got just a bit into the proper intro portion of the game. I am very disappointed now that I missed out on this game when it first released, and thus didn't contribute to its sales figures at the time.

I've been sidetracked by other stuff, and quite frankly I needed to spend time shooting griefers in the back and/or face over the last couple days (CoD) on my 360 rather than playing an emotionally-draining game. But Nier is way high up on my interested-in-playing list and will be getting some genuine time from me.

I just played through the Junkheap on my way to ending B and I'm really enjoying the perspective added by the additional cut-scenes. I knew there was something fishy about the wait that particular part of the story had played out:

Spoiler:

the kid projecting the blame he should place on himself on the robot and shade instead.

I just have to remark on this again; it's such a bittersweet game.

Those scenes are pretty short, but they enhance the story extremely well, imo.

Indeed!

Spoiler:

The scenes with the wolves... the death scene of the shade wolf specifically, I didn't quite understand but I still found it interesting.

Such a well-written game/story.

Spoiler:

That was the most poignant moment in the whole game for me. It basically portrays the reality of human wars. For me, personally, I don't believe in just war. I view all war as murder. I don't see how anyone can really believe in war after watching a cutscene like that. If you enjoyed that, just go watch Grave of the Fireflies.

I'm absolutely with you on the subject of War. It's appalling in both principle and execution and should simply not be... but that's a philosophical/ethical discussion that I've had too many times I'm just happy to see like-minded people who agree that it should simply not exist.

As for the game, yeah, it demonstrates aspects of human nature, and the way nature itself is, quite succinctly. It certainly does it much better than most games that set out to delve into similar subjects.

Spoiler:

Loved the second ending. Found Emil's bouncing head quit humorous as a change of tone after the credits rolled.

The more I see of the game, the more I am convinced that it is simply a work of genius.

Going for the 7 weapons I am missing - checked and FAQ for the list - and will kill off endings C & D tomorrow.

It would appear that the only weapon I'm missing comes from a side-quest called Disturbing the Sleep of Kings... however, it has a prerequisite quest called A Shade Entombed which doesn't seem to trigger for me. Been playing since early morn looking for the quest giver - allegedly a guard at the entrance to Facade - but there's no quest bubble on any of the guards. No info on what time restrictions there may be as related to game progress, so I'm at a loss.

Any of you guys run into this problem?

EDIT: Finally found and answer. The quests trigger after killing the getting the wolf's key. That took a load off of my mind

Seeing the story bit after vanquishing the wolf:

Spoiler:

Was this "father" the shade that was possessing the wolf? I still don't quite get it :P

Spoiler:

You have to have already finished the 2nd-half-of-game main quest in Facade to trigger it.

Thanks, Minarchist. Seems I got my answer seconds before you chimed it hehehe

Finally beat it all. That was, well, huh... A memorable game. I let is wipe out my save. It seemed poetic and fitting for a game like Nier. To lose one's progress as a gamer, I mean.

I'm loving this plus this.

Every time I fire up the game, I can't help but watch the intro video. I'm working on the third playthrough. Looking through the trophies, I think I may have to pass on getting the platinum trophy. I could probably do the system time thing for the money one, but some of the other trophies look like they might be a pain. Meh, I'm gonna keep saves at different playthroughs so that I could conceivably go back and get the rest of the trophies.

I've been trying to get a white moonflower for a really long time now (maybe tried about 7 peach/pink plants). My pink/peach plants just aren't yielding any results. Does anyone have any advice?

Edit: Nevermind, I got the seeds to drop. It seems that planting the seeds directly after harvesting a plant may help. I had been harvesting the whole field and then planting the whole field. Hurray!

I got the full 1000, and let me tell you: the upgrading every weapon unlock is a huge pain. Grinding specific enemies for rare drops, checking item spawns for eagle eggs... takes a good 30-40 hours beyond the game proper.

Yeah, I should note that even I, a completionist whore, didn't complete this one. The idea of upgrading every weapon was not palatable to me. I farmed a couple rare drops for like two hours each and didn't get a single one....no thanks.

Good to know! I probably won't go for it. I'm still enjoying being in the world at playthrough 3, though, and don't really want the game to fully end. I will probably work on some of the trophies.

Before.

Is there more/different story once you play it again? I didn't get around to really looking into it too much because I needed to do other stuff. I'll probably just read the spoilers because I really need to move on from this game. I think I spent about 35 hours on it already. I feel like I actually completed the game.

After.

The true beauty of this game...

Heehee!

I did a bunch of fishing yesterday. I just have the 2 final big ones. Couldn't get one to bite.

Did you check out this incredible and concisely written comprehensive guide? I understand the author has a paypal account if you find it helpful.

I'm such a sucker for fishing mini-games even if they aren't that good. I just need the Dunkleosteus and the Rhizodant. Is there a really good spot in Seafront to get the Dunkleosteus, or do all spots have equal chances of hooking one? Dunkleosteus -- I love that name.

I'm going to attempt to get the remaining 2 tonight and then probably move on to FF XIII for the remainder of the evening.

At least one of these fish isn't found at Seafront at all. There's a couple of out-of-the-way fishing spots -- one of them is in a river (can't recall where, it's been a while), and the other is in the sea of sand -- and I'm pretty sure that's where you want to be.

Yeah, IIRC I caught both of those in the desert. There's one directly south from where you spawn if you fast-travel there (SW corner of desert), and there's one way up in the NE corner near the temple.

The guides say that both are caught with sardines, but one is in the desert, and one is at seafront. I will do some location experimentation if I have trouble.

Rhizodont acquired!

I beat the game last year sometime and wanted to play through it again and I can't find my save file. So frustrating.....
