GWJ 500 Mile Run Club 2014

We have 10 people listed in the OP for a total of 5,000 cumulative miles! If we can get one more person we can bring our Goodjer total up to 5500, which is the distance from Los Angeles to Tokyo across the Pacific! (5480, according to Wolfram Alpha).

If we want to hedge our bets (someone could get injured) we could shoot for a goal of running from New York to Paris 3635 miles. (Or 5851 km.)

Call me old-fashioned, but how about we run along roads rather than oceans? That way we can discuss the scenery passing by.

How about something like London to Ulaanbaatar at 5492 miles?
If we get more people, we can take the scenic route through Ukraine & Kazakhstan.

If we run in the cold, like below 0 Celsius, do we get a distance multiplier?

No. I will make an argument that I run a faster eight miles in five degree Fahrenheit, than I do in eighty-ninety degree weather with high humidity.

I'm planning to do this next year so 500 miles is looking more doable. Sign me up.

just checked... I have done 274 miles this year. I know I can break 325 this year.

I'm in for 500 next year too.

I broke it today! I am at 327 with 2 days to spare.

Everyone up for 500 still?

You know it! I received a swanky reflective vest for Christmas, which helps as it's often dark this time of year by the time I get home from work. Nice job breaking your goal!

Damn it's cold out there....

I got some awesome running gear for Christmas, too. Someone needs to put together a google doc still. I will try and have a go at it. I had some good ideas, but I'm not sure how versatile google docs is.

I just set up a Runkeeper account - looks like you can track distance goals, so I'm all set to track 500 miles in 2013.

I've been using map my run all year but I will be staring this year using RunKeeper. Now I just have to get outside and run in this cold.

I am gonna be trying for it. Going to head out to Mountain Equipment Coop this week to pick up a running balaclava and some running crampons.

Winter running does require at least some investment, unfortunately. I'm a big fan of my running tights. Er, leggings. I mean, Manly Lumberjack Running Pants.

Just posting to update that I'm still in. Given my locale and hate of the cold, though, I'll be logging on the treadmill.

Definitely still in. I'll use the "Most distance Running & Walking 2013" group on Fitocracy (GWJ thread) to track it.

You poor fellas ... I ran in shorts and a t-shirt yesterday after in rained all night. I think it was around 50 or so. But I warmed up quickly.

I'm still in. I've been using Runkeeper as well. Tomorrow is Day 1.

Ooh - just saw this thread. I'm in. I may or may not be doing the Hilo marathon in March, but even if I don't, I'll still be running at least 3 times per week regardless.

I also ran in shorts and a t-shirt, as it was ~75 all day here in rainy Hilo. One of my favorite things about the move from Seattle to Hilo has been how easy it is to run outside on any day of the year.

Count me in! I attempted 1000 miles in 2011, but nearly 6 weeks without running (sickness + injury) that year kept me short of my goal. I finished 2011 with just over 800 miles recorded, but I slacked off in 2012, definitely finishing under 500 miles. Here's to some shaming from you all if I start to slack off again this year.

My goal for 2013 is 1,000 miles. I had a little over 900 in 2012. Not bad given an injury that I suffered early in the spring.

The journey of 1000 miles starts with one step, or in this case a journey of 500 miles starts with 3.2 miles. 0.6% of the way there! It was a balmy 7°F here in Wisconsin.

I will have a go at a google doc, hopefully this week. I still would like to see all the GWJer miles together in one spot. Also, I want to have a GWJ collective miles ran in 2012 compared to (#GWJers with the goal * 500). That way, some of us who will run more than 500 can have an extra goal. Also, it will be a run/walk situation so that anyone can join. 3 miles of walking will count. So, keep track until then. I had a lovely 5 mile run this morning. It's beautiful in Oregon right now.

Count me in. I have a lingering ankle injury that I'm nursing, but I think 500 miles in a year is pretty reasonable.

Hah. I entered a 500 mile run in Runkeeper instead of 500 mile total. Slight difference on that.

Ha!

Is anyone using the heart rate monitor function with Runkeeper? I have a Garmin ANT+ strap, guess I'd just need the little dongle attachment for my iphone. Just wondering how well it works.

Count me in for the 500 miles in 2013. Now if I can just get up the courage to go outside in this cold.

Goal is set in Runkeeper. I think I may just stick to weekend runs until it gets warmer.

I'll join. I'm getting back into shape after some events that kept me sidelined for the last couple of months of 2012 (new baby!) but I've recovered enough to just be starting running again.

Got my first 2 miles in yesterday. Here we go!
