Dark Souls Catch-All

Was this the famous exploit?

The first time it was the exploit, which I found on accident. I think on my 2nd or 3rd play through I was able to take it down from below the bridge. It took a long time.

I unloaded 55 arrows into the Drake in the Undead Burg area. Wondering how much damage this guy is able to absorb? Since there are no pulsating, glowy weak spots in this game it's hard to tell. The damage numbers were still coming up as I shot him in the wings and chest. I'd like to get him out of the way as I hear there's a fabulous sword up for grabs.

I haven't heard of anyone killing him with arrows, though I suppose it could be done. If you succeeded, you would actually never get the sword. Wiki Drake Sword if you want to know about it and don't mind hints, etc.

Most people never kill him.

I don't know if you can kill him now. I might be totally wrong, but it sure didn't seem possible. You can't kill him from the dark knight tower or under the bridge anymore either. I tried it with arrows at first and he just flies away and heals after so much damage, and melee seems almost impossible thanks to the constant flame spewing. I got him into his healing mode and then just ran past him and he flew away...I think he might've flown off for good. Not sure if that was the right way to deal with that or not lol.

When you get to the far end of the bridge, his pattern for whether he appears or not becomes unpredictable, in my experience. Not that he goes away for good, but sometimes I don't know how to get him to show back up.

There is a difficult melee strategy for him, and afaik it hasn't been patched out. Seems against the spirit of the series to do so.

I killed it with the Crystal Ring Shield. This was back when that shield was the most powerful weapon in the game. I miss those days, so sad when they nerfed that shield.

Hmm, thanks for the update on the drake, guys. I was about to go dump a bunch more souls into some more arrows but maybe I'll do something else.

Having lots of arrows is never a bad thing, in my experience

So, I'm setting up DSFix. It seems to work pretty well. I can do a nice 2560x1440 resolution with the antialiasing and it looks pretty decent. SLI doesn't seem to be working from what I can tell, unfortunately. I tried rendering at 5120x2880 and downsampling it. I could probably do it if the other GPU would get used. I was getting like 15 fps, so that's a no go. Whatever I end up running it at to get 30 FPS will be great. I'm relatively happy with the initial results. I can't believe how huge of a difference it makes. I got rid of the weapon HUD and downsized both. It looks much better.

Does everyone get a few black lines during the opening logos and at the start screen? I think it has something to do with the rendering. I don't see any issues when you are actually in the game. I was wondering if there was a way to fix that.

I've had similar things happen with emulators like Dolphin before.

Yes, I get the lines during the splash screens. I think DSfix has a way to get rid of them but I haven't looked around to figure out how to get rid of them.

Cool. Yeah, you can turn off the intro splash screens at least, but I haven't because it looked like it might cause some stability issues. Anyways, I can deal with it.

Ok wow, Four Kings was straight up easy with Havel's Armor equipped. You just literally run up and slash the hell out of each one with a 2-hander and maybe heal when they do the purple AOE attack and bam. That turned the hardest fight in the game into the easiest fight in the game. I actually had to wait a bit for the next one to respawn. Crazy.

I think the Dragonslayer Bow and the right build would do the trick if the Hellkite does not regenerate health when you drop down the stairs. I do not remember how much HP it has, but it is a large number.

Demon weapons upgraded would probably work for a Tank?

Edit: Nevermind. I had to unplug the bluetooth dongle for my Wiimote to get it working. I have another quick question. When doing graphics mods, I just have to make sure that I run it at 30 FPS to keep from getting banned? Should I just not do any multiplayer to avoid this?

Don't avoid multiplayer, just leave the FPS at 30. You don't want to miss out on the multiplayer aspects of this game. 30 FPS is perfectly fine.

And yes, as long as the framerate is intact, you won't get banned.

With my aversion to competitive multiplayer, I blocked the game with my firewall after my third or fourth invader. I don't remember getting steamrolled as badly when I started this on the PS3, though I am still very rusty with my limited play time I know I could run around hollow, but bleh. I really like the idea of playing cooperatively, and the notes are also great. I just wish I could disable invasions without gimping my progress!

You can stay hollow and do as much co-op as you want, as the helper. Only revive to kindle fires or if you really want to summon someone. That's basically how my first character has gone. My second character has been human most of the time because I've already played the game and just don't die much. He's only been invaded twice, and is at the end of Depths. I beat the normal player, died to the PvP pro.

So, I think I've got DSfix where I want it. I can internally render it at 3840x2160 and downscale it to 2560x1440. I even threw in some FXAA to boot. Apparently, downscaling messes up the HUD size and opacity options which was disappointing. I love that right control on the keyboard disables the hud, though. That way, I can turn it off for screenshots at least.

This isn't any interesting screenshot, but it shows how decent everything looks:

Just going to check a few mods on Nexus Mods, and then it's on to the game.

Edit: I hope that Nvidia gets SLI working at some point. That would be awesome.

The game is beautiful at a high resolution. The art underneath it all is stunning.

I remember staring at the medals on the Adventurer set.

Got my mods pretty much set. All the high res text and whatnot is great. The game is absolutely gorgeous. I love my new monitor because the black levels are just really freaking great. It's perfect for this game. The combat is freaking terrific. I finally get it. Now I just need to figure out how to kill that first demon. Unfortunately, I have to go for the evening. Tomorrow, I'll get back to it. So far, I don't have any questions about the gameplay, but I'm sure I will very soon.

Don't worry, I had a pretty humbling night of Demon's Souls last night. We're all in this together. ;)

Do tell! Other thread! I still love hearing about that game too

Maybe? I think the Dragonslayer Bow might take too long to actually set up to shoot, but worth a shot.

I've killed him twice. First time was with the crazy melee method. It took forever, but it worked.

The 2nd time was with arrows and lightning bolts. I had fairly high dexterity and a very highly upgraded bow. I had to chip away at him with the bow until he got down to 40% or so life, and then when he covered himself with his wings to regenerate, I sprinted below him, locked on, and was able to outdamage his healing with the lightning magic spam. I would imagine a heavy magic class would be able to do the same, unless they've somehow nerfed this approach also.

Dyni: What does "below him" mean in terms of casting magic? My main is a heavy magic class, and I'd love to off this mutha.

Also, I'll post about last night in the other thread, just for you.

Regarding the art: Even on 360, it's obvious the art of this game is amazing. That's why I hope DS2 is next-gen and gets to look and play like it.

It means sprinting directly underneath him when he's perched on the roof. There were a couple of dragons in Demon's Souls that were easiest to take out this way. Just get to the bonfire below and come back out a bit. You should be able to lock onto him while he's still sitting up there and cast your spells almost vertically.

Welp, took out Four Kings relatively easy--once I got my Iaito to +15 I also have created the Greatsword of Artorias, but no where near the stats to actually wield it. I suppose that's the next goal I have since the Greatsword is supposedly a pretty badass weapon. To be honest, rolling with my Thief's Mask +5, then Black Leather +4 has been fairly good for me--I've only really had to switch out armor to Havel's set if the attacks take a little too much damage from me. Other than that it's been just block and backstab as much as possible.

Not sure exactly how close I am to the end, but I at least found the end area. Just need to collect a few main boss souls first then I'm off to unlock the last stage

I collected those souls and then did the DLC content, which I highly recommend. It's late game content, and once you finish the game you'd have to play through a significant portion of the game again before getting back to it.

Stuck in a hotel room in Ottawa with no PS3. Why didn't I just bring it? Fortunately, I do have a laptop (hello Civ5) and an original xbox (hello Burnout: Revenge). But no DeS or DaS for me

Well, got the Butterfly, that was a really fun fight with dodging those attacks. I ended up killing her in two landings, I think I might have had her in one but I whiffed on my first R2 attack. I'm actually finding the enemies in Darkroot garden easier than the ones I was hitting in Sen's.

Now that I have the basement key I can go deal with Havel.

I've been known to take my 360 places just to keep playing Dark Souls.

And there is Havel down as well, wasn't that bad. Basically just circle strafed the whole time, then when he attacked I went in for an R2->R2 combo with my longsword which was chunking down about 150hp each time.

Might start progressing in Sen's again.

I kinda killed Havel in a cheap way lol. I approached him from outside the locked tower door and he aggro'd me. I could hit him through the door.

Ha!

I think I used pyro spells and kept my distance.

I would have done something similar given the chance. I feel like I am perhaps a bit over leveled a gear from the usual person at havel's, +10 Longsword, 28 STR level 44

I don't think that's over-levelled for him all, and given that he's both difficult and optional, I'd imagine there's a wide variety of levels that people get him at.
