Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Season three of Make It or Break It is up.

I'm sorry. I just endured my wife and daughter watching this.

FDR: American Badass is on WI now, and it's spectacular!

After contracting polio from a werewolf bite, FDR won't stop at single-handedly ending the Great Depression and prohibition. With the help of a team of historic figures, he must claim victory in World War II by defeating an army of Nazi werewolves.

Is Eleanor Roosevelt gonna have to strong arm a ho?

I watched most of the movie today while doing other things. It's really bad. This is definitely a booze and friends required movie.

I'm on the cutting edge of pop culture.

I'm jealous, truly.

I have tried to watch Arrested Development a few times. I think that style of comedy just doesn't work for me. It is just so... dumb. Not the first time I haven't liked a comedy everyone else loves, I didn't like The Office either.

Philistine.

This show is the opposite of dumb. It's one of the smartest American sitcoms ever made, if not the smartest.

But hey, if you need a laugh track to tell you when something's funny, then make sure you buy a lot of chapstick, mouthbreather.

I am the same way, everybody around the office here loves these shows but I just can't get into them for some reason. Maybe I need to try drinking while I watch them.

Not really hidden, but I watched Spielbergs Tintin over the holiday. As a fan of the Tintin books I was super satisfied with the movie version. I thought they did a really good job staying true to the books and the feeling of them. Spielberg injected some excellent Indiana Jones feeling to some scenes as well. Great story and I really liked the mix of realism and cartoonish style they developed for it.

I went to see this in the cinema (my first 3-D movie, no less!) and thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so, in fact, that I went and bought the Bluray as soon as it came out. Well worth a watch.

Wait, Spielberg? I thought it was Peter Jackson? Am I getting people confused?

Either way, I'll likely be adding it to the queue. That was rated PG, right? So it should be safe to watch with my niece?

Burnnn!

But seriously, I like both Arrested Development and Big Bang Theory. Does that make me stupid, blind, or just happy?

Happy, definitely happy.

Spielberg was definitely the director. I do believe that Jackson was a producer, though. WETA Workshop did the effects, too, IIRC. It is extremely kid safe in my opinion. As long as grand adventures are okay for kids it should be just fine.

And if this one performs to expectations Spielberg and Jackson will reverse roles on the sequel, with Jackson directing and Spielberg producing. For the third installment they said they will both direct, according to the extras on the bluray disc. I still have my fingers crossed that this one did well, and they're cramping up. Gaming like this is hard.

It's smart, yes, but it's also dumb. Like 30 Rock, which seems to have followed in its footsteps in some ways, Arrested Development mixes genuine wit and cleverness with broad, juvenile humor. There are some great visual gags (like Gob trying to throw a letter into the ocean), fun meta-humor, and solid dialogue. There are also a lot of what I call wacky voice humor: characters who are supposed to be funny because they speak in a funny way or otherwise have over-the-top affectations to their personalities. There aren't, at this point, characters whose appeal rests solely on wacky voice humor, but every character outside of Michael and George Michael has at least some degree of it, with probably Gob and Buster being the most reliant on strange behavior.

I've never seen a full episode of Arrested Development, just a handful of clips. What I have seen has suggested most of the characters are despicable, the source of all their own misery, and the protagonist is forced to deal with this because he just won't cut ties with everyone.

And Michael Cera has a crush on his blood relative.

So not really all too interested myself.

Yeah, it's pretty much all safe and good. There's a couple of scary, close call, moments some imagery that might be a bit scary (villain walking through flames set to tense music), but all in all it's a very PG movie.

I hated it at first. It took me about a half season before everything clicked. Fortunately, I had nothing to do one day and I just sat down and watched it. Seriously, give half a season a try. I thought all the things you put down there. I generally dislike shows about terrible people. I was the same way with Seinfeld. It took me watching a whole season before that show finally clicked.

...Have any of you even seen a chicken?

Just don't do that in Mexico.

Seinfeld is actually a show I kind of fell out of love with. I remember watching the reruns just like I watched Simpsons reruns, but one day I realized I hated every character. As I've gotten older I've continued to hate the characters more and more. I've been told that's part of the point, though. You're laughing at the suffering of people that are assholes and basically do this stuff to themselves.

If I end up having more time to watch TV I'll give it a try. When you say half a season, do you have a specific in mind? Or just watch half the first season and see what I think?

ccesarano wrote:

Yeah, you would want to watch half of the first season or at least 4 episodes. It's all about the character development. Anyways, that's how it was for me. If you have a really lazy day with not much better to do, give it a shot.

This is most definitely true. I remember catching a random episode during the first season and felt rather unimpressed considering how many people were telling me how hilarious it was. Then I tried from the beginning and started loving it a lot, and when I got up to that random episode again, it was suddenly ten times funnier.

That said, I could see the show not being as powerful to somebody new to it. A lot of the jokes were 4th wall in nature and dealt with the external politics of the show always being on the brink of cancellation that would probably just go right over people's heads nowadays. And towards the end there it felt like they were being intentionally alienating to new audiences. But overall I still loved the show a lot.

I really hope the new Netflix episodes end up being good, because with 30 Rock, Community and Parks & Rec all coming to a close I'm kind of losing all my comedy options here.

Modern Family and New Girl should fill in nicely, too.
