FTL

FTL is now available for the Linux platform on Steam. It's a Christmas/Festivus/Holiday miracle!

Today (23rd) is Festivus.

Anyway, tried the Crystal A last night. Was going along nicely, destroying everything. Had picked up two Engi crewmen, some extra humans and a rock. All stations filled, a 2-man crystal boarding party rocking. Everything going just as smooth as can be. Although I didn't have the scrap to buy a Breach Bomb II when I saw it in store... but surely that won't come back to haunt me right?

The first solar flare I ran into in S4 or 5... and it also happens to be the first ship I run into with 2 shield bars... and my crystal guns suddenly can't pierce anything... I don't have a bomb or missile... I can't risk teleporting over because my ship has 3 rooms on fire... all hell breaks loose... my ship goes from 3/4 hull to blowing up in a minute... game over.

Just when I was laughing about how easy the game was and how I almost had all the ships and maybe I should start playing on Normal. Boom.

Don't forget Saturnalia!

(my spellchecker is smart enough to recognize Saturnalia as a real word but still thinks teleport is bogus, really?)

That's why I only play on easy. Make one mistake, just ONE, and the game will smash you flat. I keep learning new things to avoid and the game just keeps finding more.

Like that Rock B ship. "oh it's just a solar flare, well my entire crew is immune to fire, what could go wrong?"

Spoiler:

Rock B has no outside doors and starts with no door system installed

Immune to fire, yes. Able to breathe in a vacuum, no.

I love and hate this f*cking game.

Finally I found an Engi Homeworld and had Long-Range Scanners. Made a backup save just in case. Stealth ship is the only one I still need. (Well Crystal B still too, but I was using that ship)

First try: Never find the quest. Good thing I savescummed.

Second try: Find the quest on 2nd jump. Part 2a the ship gets away but apparently it was fake? What a joke of a fight though, as I missed three hull breach bombs and thererfore had no chance to get through the shields. Part 2b, I stopped the ship, got the part 3 quest. But there was no quest marker. Next section was S8, and no quest marker there either. Thanks game, I completed a step but you robbed me... Figured I'd beat the game since I was in S8. Had another string of 3 misses with breach bomb on phase 2, and by that point my ship was in shambles, on fire, invaded, and had no prayer. What a f*cking joke.

Third try: Find quest at same 2nd jump spot. Went to far quest first for what I thought was 2b, but was 2a. Victory. Made it to 2b, victory. Got my quest marker for part 3 this time. Made it 1 jump ahead of fleet. Stealth ship, huzzah! Now, might as well beat the game right? Phase 1 no prob. Phase 2, I dominate, and kill every single enemy in the main part of the ship. I do take some heavy damage from drones though, down to maybe 40% hull. Well, with only the front gunner alive, phase 3 will be a cake walk right? Right? Nooooo, of course not. I hit the first breach bomb. Then I miss the next four! Never can get the shields punched through, and do enough damage to finish the damn ship off. Despite it not repairing at all... and after missing all those breaches it finally chips away at me between the super weapon and the regular laser. Ugh!

Anyway... got all my ships now, except 2 B variants... but tired of RNG screwing me so hard. Thought I wanted to finish up other achievements, but I'm getting sick of getting robbed even when my ship is very well-outfitted and I know what I'm doing. With a breach bomb 2, a burst laser, the two starting crystal weapons, and especially with the pre-igniter I had for most of that gaem, there's no way in hell I should have lost those fights on the ship quest or vs the boss, multiple times.

Still no Crystal ship victory thanks to that bull. But I guess "win the game with every ship type" isn't an achievement and shouldn't be a realistic goal... ugh.

Because skimming is awesome.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed playing my first game of this last night, even though I was on easy and never made it out of the first area (moved a crew member where I didn't mean to, and subsequently ran out of time to fix the O2 leak).

Made even more awesome by the fact it was a Steam gift from Aristophan!

I turned the game down to easy and won with the Kestrel. Finally! Now to start getting the rest of the ships and alternate layouts!

Such a great game... and it runs on this crappy laptop... under Linux!

Saved from a dull Christmas night away from home (and my real computer).

Just drinking some nogg, sitting on the couch playing FTL while the family awakens. What a great way to start Christmas.

So we must be very close to an Android release, right? Cause this game is made for that platform.

Everything but the door opening stuff. I see that being tough on a small screen.

I think it would work ok if they had 'Door Control Mode':

Touch the door sub-system, then all non-door elements are dimmed and disabled until you click off again.

Hm that might work. The game play is a lot about pausing and queuing things anyway, so a door-pause would work.

I would pay Square-Enix money to have FTL on my iPad.

There, I fixed it for you. Yeah, I would definitely pay to see that happen too. No question about it.

The Engi A starting weapon is a game-winner, honestly. I find it the easiest ship by far.

Just beat the game on normal with the Engi A! Whooohoo! The boss fight was cake this time around for whatever reason.

I picked up No Redshirts Here and Ballistophobia at the same time, to boot!

I like this. Door-pause the game and then swipe through doors you want to open and close. Combing this with the OPEN ALL and CLOSE ALL buttons we have already and you should be set.

I find it a little weak on it's own. On the other hand my best Engi A game ever had me running with TWO Ion Cannon IIs and a fire beam. That much ion power was enough to disable a ships weapons, shields and oxygen all at the same time.

I've been trying to make things work with the Stealth A and B ships, so I've totally forgotten about the joys of Ion II...

Make it so number one!

My design consultancy cheque from Subset just needs to clear first.

After a dozen or so tries, finally beat the ol girl! My elite boarding crew, rip, sacrificed their lives for the victory.

Mantises? They get a bad rap, but really they have hearts of slimy gold.

Congrats.

Thanks to your avatar This was read with the image of a happy Klingon in my mind's eye.

So after many losses, yesterday I beat the boss using Engi A, Stealth A and Federation A....all on easy, in consecutive plays. Now it seems like the enemy ships are more heavily armed. Anyone notice if the enemy strength ramps up after winning? And yes, I double-checked that I am still on easy.

Fed A was a blast, waiting for that artillery beam to power up and then seeing it ravage a ship.

I have no proof but it definitely feels like they have better guns.

I snagged this recently. Any newbie advice before I jump in?

Congrats.

I actually used some Rock people, not at has hitting, but hearty folk.
