And another preview episode with Madame Vastra, Strax and Jenny:

Can't wait

Didn't really care for this episode. However, I did like potato head and dead girl.

I enjoyed this one, moreso than a few of the Xmas ones. Just a pity that they couldn't find an actor for the villain and had to rely upon the 'talents' of Richard.E.Grant, who is right up there with Richard Roxburgh in my list of the scientific proofs that the technology to bring mannequins to some semblance of life already exists.

First impressions of new girl ? In Old Who parlance, an intriguing mix of Liz Shaw's intelligence and Leela's determination to get into trouble, although we'll wait to see for obvious reasons.

Very fun. Happy to be caught up now and hope this will be a new Christmas tradition for my wife and I.

Anyway, nice bit at the end

Spoiler:

connecting Clara and Oswin. Wasn't expecting that from the non-spoilery interviews I had read.

Not the strongest of Dr Who episodes but still very good. I hope they explain things because it made no sense to me how Clara is there and kind of the same person, how long after the previous episode is it, etc.
I hate it when tv shows skip a period of time where stuff happens but they don't explain any of it, putting us in an unfamiliar situations where things make very little sense.

That said, I'm sold on the new girl ever since the first episode she appeared in.

I'm intrigued by whatever is going on with

Spoiler:

Clara/Oswin.

Additionally, I think I'd be happy to watch a spinoff just about Strax.

Maybe it's like an old favourite.

Spoiler:

Jagaroth

My kids were laughing so hard I could barely hear the TV. Strax is great!

I very much liked the interrogation scene with Clara and Vastra. That was some slick writing.

I got one of these (for £20 less than that price, I'm told) for Christmas.

For those not familiar with ancient Whovian history:

Spoiler:

The bit at the end, where the Doctor thought there was something vaguely familiar about all this but couldn't bring it to mind, was a reference to two Second Doctor adventures. The Great Intelligence was the enemy in "The Abominable Snowmen" (in which the GI tried to conquer the world with snowmen ... robot yeti, in fact) and "The Web of Fear" (in which the London Underground was the route for a second - or, as we now know, actually third - conquest attempt).

"The Web of Fear" was also the story that first introduced Brigadier (then Colonel) Lethbridge-Stewart. Both stories are now almost completely lost (one episode of each survives).

Sad that many of the Who adventures I remember from my childhood are now lost and will never be seen again

Speaking of Doctor Who Christmas gifts, I got one of these:

Oh, and one of the names this particular villain uses?

Spoiler:

Yog-Sothoth

Thanks for the info Crowbar.

Not only how good the writing is but the acting as well. The best way to see how good a writer and/or an actor is in a scene where characters sit down and have a conversation because everything is so constrained. And JLC didn't disappoint, great facial expressions that you can almost see what she is really thinking of saying before she gives her one word answers.

I read the books of those story lines as a kid. I wonder if they are still out there.

I really enjoyed the episode. I'd gotten used to New Who Christmas episodes that were not really connected to the regular series. This is definitely a part of the whole storyline, I enjoyed that very much. Now we just have to wait for the rest of Series 7.

Speaking of the quality of writing/acting... I had never watched the seasons with Eccleston as the Doctor... Trying to watch them on netflix and it's quite jarring. I'm so used to the manic qualities that Tennant and Smith brought to the character that Eccleston comes across as downright boring.

He's really different. Very angry and troubled, with moments of mania. I genuinely missed him when Tenant started. It was a different approach, and dare I say bold considering the history there. He was the first revived Doctor, after all.

Yeah, Eccelston's Doctor is still reeling from the effects of the Time War, so he's pretty damned angry.

I like to think he's angry because he's stuck with Rose as a companion.

Stop clockin' please. :p

Hahahahah, I guess when 10 regenerated he had just accepted it by then, huh?

"Fine, horse lady can stay..."

"Ugh, well at least she doesn't whistle when she speaks. That would be awful."

Hahahahahaah

Nah, by then he had a plan. "Okay, horse lady, I'm going to stick you in an alternate dimension and leave you there forever."
