Demon's Souls - Catch All

I prefer the occasional, "I can't take this" and "Praise the sun" in Dark Souls than the constant, "I Need Help! Please rate!" I see over and over in ONE section of Demon's Souls. Dark Souls patched that bug. The fourth wall in Dark Souls is far stronger. The third iteration from FROM will be epic.

Here's hoping it's a multiplatform next-gen masterpiece with their amazing art and no (significant) slowdown!

If it's just this experience you're after - the sequel Dark Souls is on both PS3 & 360, and is being released on PC soon.

Dark Souls is the reason I'm thinking about paying $270 to play Demon's Souls. ;)

Arise! I ended up paying just $216 to get a PS3 and Demon's Souls on Black Friday.

Now I need a recommendation:

Are there any good third-party controllers for PS3 that are more like Xbox 360 controllers? I should say, I know that there are, but can y'all actually recommend one that you've used?

Thanks!

I think the Batman one is the only one with mostly positive reviews.

You can get trigger attachments for the buttons. People seem to really like them.

Yup. Real Triggers definitely help with L2 and R2.

I prefer the PS3 controller to the 360. Although I will admit that sometimes if I need to set the controller down it can activate the L2 or R2 animations.

I have them and it feels much more comfortable to me.

About to finally start this game. Any suggestions on classes? My Dark Souls characters have been a Sorceror and a Cleric.

Royal is considered the "easy mode" starting class because it's the only one that starts with offensive magic and a ring that slowly regens mana.

I usually steer people away from this class because it can get you a ways into the game without actually making you learn the melee combat. Since you've spent a significant amount of time with Dark Souls, you already know how the combat works, so have at it if you want an easier start.

I think Templar and Knight are both very good starting classes for a more classic approach. I think the Knight starts with a healing spell, but I can't quite remember.

Royal.

Default magic. And you can still build for hand-to-hand if you want. Similar to Dark Souls, starting class doesn't matter a ton on how you end up speccing later, but the starting difference is a little bigger in this game. Might as well make the early part easy on yourself.

I picked a Holy Knight or something like that with a healing spell, but didn't like the poke axe or whatever, and only played about five minutes before my brother asked me to play Magic wth him. So I'm happy to abandon that.

Definitely not going Hunter or Thief. Open to other things like the aforementioned Royal or the Priest.

A bit of advice though. The bow had more uses against hard to reach enemies in Demon's Souls and in some cases the bow is pretty much the only way to kill some enemies.

Not sure if I ever even had a bow.

I think Magic covered it. Kind of like in Dark Souls. Need one or the other, just some type of ranged attack, for certain things. But no one item or spell is mandatory.

Yeah, I breezed through Demons Souls with just magic. I found the bow a pain in the ass to shoot so was happy to not use it at all.

I was mainly thinking of area 4-1. I never tried magic against those enemies, so I kind of assumed you had to use a bow.

There are certain points where you can lock onto all of them They are much easier to hit with a bow though.

I miss my mega health regen build from this game. They took that stuff out for Dark Souls.

Oh the rolling skeletons? Yeah just lock, dodge, and wham with a sword or spell. Good farming area, they are so easy to kill.

Not them, the flying mantas.

Oh yeah... lock and spell. Probably 75% of them come in range. Although I think that's on 4-2? I think all the ones on 4-1 come in range.

Gosh this makes me want to play. It's been so long. I need another platinum to match my Dark Souls one.

I started a new character today and played as a Knight for about an hour and a half. My mother-in-law watched and commented for most of the time.

Not sure if I'll stick with the Knight; I wanted a faster weapon than the poleaxe, but he's still slow.

Man, the first level is big, bigger in one bite than most areas in DkS between bonfires. I did activate a shortcut, I think.

Spoiler:

THIS bridge dragon didn't get me!

I've only died once, at the end of the tutorial.

How's the multiplayer in this game? I got this when it came out, but the game psychologically broke me and I never got past area 3-1 I think. Is it just full of griefers/cheaters now or is it still fun to help people out with a boss fight?

There are multiple shortcuts throughout that level. It's really an amazing design.

I think that still might be my favorite overall area in the entire series. The way the multitude of shortcuts are integrated organically into the level is just amazing. It is truly a clinic in expert level design.

Tonight, I started my "permanent" character - previously I was playing on a relative's PS3. Without a PSPlus account for cloud saves, and knowing that replaying areas is still fun and much easier in this series, I just started fresh.

I took a long time choosing my class. I felt like I would be cheating myself by playing a Royal, Magician, or Priest, with those being (presumably) too similar to my two characters in Dark Souls. I considered a Wanderer, which is how my sorcerer started in DkS, but I hate having no kick.

I ended up going back to the Temple Knight that I sampled originally. I felt like trying out the halberd-wielding class again would be a novel experience and allow me to learn the subtleties of a different weapon style. Ironically, halberds also have an alternative to kick.

I played most if the area prior to the bridge dragon with the halberd, but ended up seeing the merchant about a longsword, my most-used weapon from Dark Souls. I think I just feel more confident exploring with a weapon that doesn't take an hour to swing - although it seems like the longsword takes a bit longer to swing here than in Dark Souls.

I played all the way back to my farthest progress point from playing on the other PS3 - it turns out I was right before the first boss. I'm sure he's not considered too tough, and he isn't, but I was still pleased to take him down on the first try. I'm also slightly pleased that in the time I've been playing, across a couple different classes, I've only died so far to the tutorial boss - and I did slightly better this time. I'm not even sure you're meant to kill him, really.

So far I'm loving it, and loving the first level's design. No surprise there, as I seem to love playing in medieval castle areas. My favorite areas in Dark Souls have been the Undead Burg and Parish, and the Painted World.

I've never played DS as a caster, I always tend towards the spear+shield playstyle cause I'm not that great at the melee combat, and the magic feels OP. So I'm trying things a little differently this time around, I'm going with a 1h dex + magic build that I hope will be fun and still challenging. I am still going to get the scraping spear ASAP as it is very useful for some things, and still works well with the dex build. I'm leveling up my scimitar right now though, and hoping to get myself a Kris blade soon. My next goal is to get the PWS, Kris blade and the Ring of Magical Sharpness so I can take out Firelurker easily and start making some boss weapons!

I realized last night that on my "real" playthrough, I never encountered Ostrava! Did I miss him? Should I go back? I freed him on the throwaway character I was playing on my relatives' PS3.

I'm nearly positive you miss him if you didn't free him. I believe you miss out on the opportunity to get a weapon that is good, but not better than others.

If he's this game's equivalent of Solaire, I don't want to miss him. It wouldn't take much time to start over right now. What do you think?

He does offer some insight into the current events of the world. Knowing what he gives you I wouldn't be concerned with saving him on your first play through, unless you only intend to play the game once.
