Wii U Catch-All

I would presume the textures are still being (mostly) upscaled unless you've heard definitively otherwise.

How is TVii working for everyone? It's not working for me, I just get a grey loading screen, and then it times out and says "Service is unavailable. Try again in a few minutes."

This makes me somewhat sad, because I see other people have it working on twitter. So what's the deal? I'm in Canada, maybe that's it? Anyone else Canadian got TVii working on their WiiU?

Not working here in San Francisco.. got the same problem you have.

ok, I'm glad to know its not just me. Hopefully it's something on their end, because if it's some setting or something on my end its going to be a pain to troubleshoot.

i contacted support and here is the answer they gave me (which SOLVED MY PROBLEM):
----------
Hello,

Thanks for contacting us. The error messages may be resolved by following the steps found through the link below. These steps will assign different primary and secondary DNS servers to your existing connection.

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/sys...

After performing the steps, test your Internet connection and try accessing Nintendo TVii.

If you continue to experience Nintendo TVii errors or are unable to get a successful Internet connection, please reply to this with a phone number and time frame for us to reach you.

Sincerely,

Ivan Avila-Campillo

Nintendo is pointing to Google's public DNS to solve problems. Very interesting.

I know, isn't that interesting? I did try the Open DNS numbers in there first, but it didn't work. Using the Google DNS numbers did the trick for me, though.

We have a Wii U sitting in a wrapped up box for Christmas for the kids. Question: When opened, what exactly do we need to do? i.e. Does it need to charge? Update? Emerge from its chrysalis? I'm asking in case I have to open it up and get things ready for "instant" action...

Yeah, open it up and perform the system update. It takes between 40 and 80 minutes. You can play games on disc out of the box but if you want to do anything with Miiverse or Wii backwards compatibility you need the update.

The gamepad seems to come half-charged so that's not critical but you might as well leave it charging while the system update rolls.

Yeah there's definitely a system update that could take you an hour or more by all reports, and includes some key functionality. Better plug it in after the kids are asleep tonight and get it patched.

Thanks guys!

This is both hilarious and mind boggling. I know it takes some time to get the systems across from China but this firmware update should have been baked into anything beyond the second run of systems. I can imagine how many mainstream consumers will be frustrated Christmas morning, especially if Nintendo's servers can't handle the load like what happened at launch. They've got to fix this fast.

Not sure they're even on the 2nd run. There wasn't much of a shortage of stock this time around.

And several pages back in this thread it was covered that they wouldn't have the patch built-in until sometime next year.

Errrr stelehausered!

The second run of systems? They were likely producing these in mid-September and by most reports the patch wasn't finished until the Thursday before it released. I would bet pre-updated systems start shipping in January.

Regarding "they need to fix this fast," I just don't think it's that critical (as an aside I expect pre-updated systems to start arriving in January).

What are the real implications for the Wii U Christmas gifts? Are the kids going to get mad and insist mom and dad return the system? Boycott downloadable games? Neither scenario seems likely to me. In the end you deal with it and forget about it three days later. People put up with iTunes and all the resulting shenanigans, I think they can handle an hour-long update.

I'm sorry if I'm too dismissive of launch window quibbles, but if you take the long view of things, none of this is terribly important. If Sony can get past launching $200 too expensive and MS can get around the red ring nightmare (both larger issues, IMO), an update for the systems sold in the first three months on the market isn't something that makes or breaks the console's success. Right? Or am I crazy?

And to be clear, other issues could bring the Wii U down. I'm still in no way equipped to predict its success. I just think it'll come down to bigger things than this.

Hehe. Done a couple of those today.

Well said. Anyone know how far behind on firmware updates a new 360 or PS3 is? How about a fresh Windows 7 install?

The 360 is more likely to be OK out of the box but who knows how long some of those units have been on shelves. Still, a 360 update is usually 10 seconds. PS3 seems to get updates at least once a month but I usually find the process completes in around 5 minutes which isn't terrible.

Game updates sure, but the fall system update this year took me between between 20 and 22 minutes on the second fastest fiber connection available here.

My Xbox died shortly before that time so I couldn't tell you how long it would have taken me :).

Understand, I couldn't care less about this. But this ridiculously long update issue is something that a lot of mainstream people know about now and at least from my observations, it's at least concerning them. Unfortunately, people (and the press) will tolerate just about anything from Apple but companies like Nintendo don't get away with the stuff Apple does. I think the WiiU's a great idea (more so after playing the Rayman Legends demo at Best Buy yesterday) but beyond the intense brand confusion (I know lots of people who still think it's a Wii accessory), they just don't need bad headlines like this. Regardless of how dumb a problem it ultimately is, it being out there dilutes their message I think. I say again, I hope and want this thing to kick ass. I just think that with fickle mainstream consumers that they're trying to win a second time, Nintendo isn't doing themselves any favours.

Well, the update and install took just this side of 60 minutes. So everyone get your knickers out of whatever twist you had them in. As I understand it, the update isn't 100% necessary if you just want to rock and roll with NintendoLand. What is worse really is the possibility of "bricking" your system if you somehow goof up the update -- that will win lots of style points with the general public.

p.s. to back up PA, the Rayman demo at ToysRUs sold my son and I on the console. Very, very slick game.

Backing up PA's Bit on Apple hypocrisy... I've never been able to get an iOS update in the first 24 hours. Even then you're still talking about 15-20 minutes until the update installs and the device restarts.

To Apple's credit, even though the iOS 6 update took 90+ minutes to install on our iPad 2 and looked like it was frozen for most of that time, I wasn't prevented from doing anything on the iPad or using any of its core functions until I installed it.

I'm so itching to play ZombiU and I so wish I could get a WiiU Deluxe but it ain't going to be in the cards until February at the very minimum. My girlfriend is a total non-gamer and we co-opped all of Rayman: Origins including all the Tricky Treasures (though not the final stage they open, f*ck that stage) and when she saw how Rayman Legends used the WiiU, she immediately got it. She can't wait for that game to come out. Maybe I can get her to split the system with me.

My wonderful wife got me a Wii U for Christmas. Now I need to find a store that's open to buy some games :).

Looks like that will have to be the plan until tomorrow. Any recommendations?

ZombiU and Nano Assault Neo (eShop) are ace.

Sounds good. Sold. Can you get the new Mario in the Eshop? I haven't even got it out of the box yet?

I think Walmart is open.

Yes, you can get Mario in the eShop. I second Nano Assault Neo, loads of fun.

I picked up Super Mario and Mickey Power of Two. Took forever to download. I assume servers are swamped. Mickey still not done. Super Mario is pretty darn good. Classic fun.

Right. £140 in cash, £60 in vouchers, £7 in loyalty credit, and whatever I get for BLOPS 2 on exchange. I reckon I still need £100 for the deluxe box, ZombieU and Mario.
