Firearm Hobbyist Catch-All

Found a writeup at ar15.com.

Lower looks ok, similar to other experiences. Wish there was an austin gwjer around to help with the build.

But first, the safe. Going to check out Lowes tomorrow. That will financially force me to wait on the rifle.

Just a heads up, I bought a Liberty model safe ($465 - includes shipping/install) from Lowe's an would highly recommend it. Very well built for the price range and a nice amount of space. I wrote a product review on their site if you're interested. It's the one titled "CE-12 Model Replaced By CN-12".

Dear Santa,

I heard the local gun shop had four of those marinecote Mossbergs I want. I only need one of them, and I've been pretty good this year.

P.S.: I will bake you extra cookies if you throw in one of the orange survival kit tubes <3

You should let Santa know if you want 12 or 20 gauge. If it is for deterring intruders, a 20 is usually easier to handle and just as intimidating.

Santa knows I want a 12 gauge... I'd like to pick up a deer barrel and a different stock for it at some point.

20 gauge sounds "easier" but seems too small to me for hunting versatility, I think. Home defense is more of a bonus.

Fair enough. I'll let Santa know. We're tight like that.

I mean, I've been interested in building for awhile as well.

Prebuilt uppers are easy to come by and the prices are generally reasonable since competition is nearly perfect. As a result, you have very little margin in building.

Lowers are a different story since they are the controlled element and folks who purchase them tend to purchase them as a complete gun.

If you know what you are doing and have the supervision of a competent gunsmith, building an AR15 is actually not terribly difficult.

So there's 2 of us. All we need is

When getting my 9mm XDm today(whoo hoo. pickup tomorrow), 2 people in front of me were getting lowers. One stripped, one complete.
The stripped one was this

I am convinced folks are getting more and more creative about their logos on lowers because there is really nothing else to distinguish them. An AR15 lower is an AR15 lower. Nothing really makes it "better" than the next one. That is the beauty in standardization. In that sense, they are really nothing more than a manufactured commodity.

If you want, go ahead and spend an extra $20 to get the Spikes Tactical zombie logo. What is life without a little whimsy? But don't go crazy.

Also, the Rock River LPK is a little rough, but works just fine. The Fulton Armory kit I got years back is about as good as it gets. Thankfully, I got mine super cheap during one of their warehouse sales (they are just down the street from me).

There's youtube videos.
We can probably figure it out.

Don't screw around. Get the book. You'll be glad you did.

I got mine signed by the author.

A buddy of mine followed a a youtube video guide with some added tips from builders on AR15.com when he put his lower together. Didn't take him very long at all.

The upper ->handguard -> barrel seems daunting.

The lower seems fairly straight forward. And something generic to focus on prior to making something that is safe ready.

Still, the whole thing is fairly intimidating. What did your buddy do about the upper/barrel/handguard? This is where buying is a bit easier. So many pieces.

That was why I specified that he built his lower. He just ordered an upper from Bravocompanyusa.

The only problem with just ordering a pre-built upper right now is... well, good luck finding one, much less one in the specific configuration you want.

I just glanced at Bravo Company, Rainier Arms, Midway, and a few other sites and they're out of stock on everything.

Yeah, I'll probably see if that pre-ordered lower ships, then I'll get the hopefully easier to source parts kit and stock.

Gonna watch these tomorrow(and order the book when I get the parts kit)

I'm sure one of y'all is planning a trip to Austin for SxSW.

This is how my local gun store normally looks like.

Bud's is the same.

Is it just me or does anyone else notice a trend toward .308? Most of my shooting friends all have the .45, 12g, and AR15. Now they are working on a .308 bolty or .308 battle rifle like an FN, M1A, or AR10.

I am sort of torn between getting the STG58 or a long range bolty.

I swear you have a mic in our living room or something...

I stand by what I said about the pink AR15s, though.

I was into 7.62 NATO before it was cool.

It's just a feature of the camera. http://www.paleoconsedwinandclovercam.com

Really, it is nothing like that, but you really ought to repaint your bedroom. The color hardly suits either of you.

*sneaks pile of D&D books off coffee table*

I can't find the ad now, but Edwin found a guy a couple hours away selling his CZ 75 SP01 so we may be road tripping tomorrow.

Do it! It's a ridiculously nice gun for the prices it commands.

Dude says the previous (original) owner told him it only had like 600 rounds through it too. I guess he bought it and never made it out to the range at all, and now he needs some extra scratch for a remodeling project.

I always take those numbers and multiply them by 100 just because you know folks always lie about that sort of thing. That said, so long as he took care of it, the number hardly really matters.

*shrug* we'll see... I'm just the ride-along on this one anyway. I didn't see any obvious grammatical mistakes in his email to harshly judge, so he's probably an ok guy.

It's a P-01, not the SP-01.

I'm actually kind of afraid of getting it considering what is going on but I've been wanting another gun ever since I sold my .22's ~4 years ago. My plan has been to practice and join the Tuesday Night Pistol League (IDPA) or the local USPSA.

If I do get it, I need to find a holster, mag holders, belt, better safe (mine is cheap), spare parts and a space to clean and maintain it.
