MMA Catch All Thread.

I didn't make any of the sponsored events. By the time the fights were over and I'd had something to eat I was exhausted. I'm an old man on east coast time.

Roy could fight at 205. He weighed in at 246 and could easily handle losing 30 pounds for walking around weight and cut the extra ten for weigh-ins. He's simply in the wrong weightclass.

I agree. He said he would have to lose some muscle to make 205. I'm not so sure, but even if he did it would be better for him.

I think he's a smart fighter with a good sense of distance and timing. That said, the 205 division is a tough one.

I was watching one of those Gracie Breakdown videos and they were talking about the crucifix position that Roy loves so much. The best way to get out of it involves creating space between their chest/belly and your body to sneak your knee into (which allows you to get leverage to sneak out of the position). They mentioned that one of the reasons Roy's crucifix is so tough is because of that big belly. You can't get the separation you normally could. You also don't have many training partners that can mimic that body-type/skill/strength combination.

Just an interesting way in which Roy's body helps him. (Though his being overweight for his muscle mass makes it harder to get opponents who are in better shape into the crucifix position in the first place)

Is there anyone in the world who gets FUEL to watch the UFC on FUEL? I have channels that are completely bizarre in my package, but not that one. Silly.

Wow.

Miesha Tate vs. Ronda Rousey.

Spoiler:

Why didn't she tap? I'm not sure if that was heart or....what. Some incredible pain tolerance that's for sure. When they showed her face as she way lying there there was no grief or signs of pain or any emotion at all, really. I was kind of taken aback. I haven't checked the outcome but I'm assuming her arm was broken. Hopefully it was a clean break without too much soft tissue damage. That was just brutal to watch.

Yeah. She was clearly in shock in that after fight interview. She had that 10000 yard long stare for sure. I've seen it before and that is exactly what it looks like.

I suspect the reason she didn't tap was precisely the reason she fought such a crappy fight for her: ego. The trash talking on both sides of that fight started months ago and kept up to the point that it was pretty clear someone wasn't getting out of that ring without some kind of big injury. She clearly let Rousey get into her head where she spent the night rent free. It definitely showed in how irresponsibly aggressive she was being with her hands. She pushed the action way too hard by throwing bomb after bomb. One of them managed to catch Rousey, but the majority sailed clear. One of them set up that monster hip throw that ended up in side control, then the mount, then that ugly armbar.

It was a great fight overall, but I can't help but think that Tate could have brought a better game had she kept her head clear. That too, however, is part of the fun of watching these. In any event, it was probably the single best chick fight I've ever watched.

Oh, and Rousey is all manner of smokin' hot.

LIVE THREAD, LIVE!

UFC 148 tonight, Silva vs. Sonnen II. This is going to be a freaking wonderful match no matter which way it goes.

Just watched the fight. That knee to the face while Chael was on the ground seemed like a cheap shot to me. Chael was sitting on his butt with his back against the cage and Silva came in with a huge knee. The fight probably should have been stopped there just as if he'd done an eye poke or groin shot and given Sonnen a chance to recover his bearings.

I do love watching Anderson Silva's stand-up game. Just before he dodged that spinning backfist, you should see him hit that insane zone he has where you can't hit him. His arms go slack at his side, he starts his head/shoulders bouncing and you know sh*t is about to get real.

If you go back and watch replays of the knee, you'll see the knee itself hit dead center of the chest. Some of Silva's thigh hits Sonnen in the chin when Sonnen's head snaps down, but the strike itself is clearly aimed at the chest. It was very similar to the way Evans took out Ortiz. This was much noted while watching the match, but the replays clarified it to satisfaction for everyone in our group.

Edit: Otherwise I absolutely agree. It was a great fight. After the first round I thought it might follow the example of the first one, but Silva didn't have to redeem the honor of his BJJ school this time. He ended that hard.

Forrest vs Ortiz was almost a bum fight. Two dudes flailing at each other with more cardio than technique. Cool though.

Just saw the KO by Swanson. Holy cow, that was an impressive delayed response of the body shutting down after the brain has checked out. It was a good 3 or 4 seconds after getting an awesome right (hook?? haymaker?) punch on the temple before he crumpled to the ground. The body shot by Swanson immediately previous was impressive as well.

And impressive restraint by Swanson in not leaping and delivering some massive ground and pound, seeing that his opponent was done.

Edit - Just watched Jones submit Belfort. Was this the hardest fought fight of Jones' career? Also, am I wrong in thinking that having arms that are probably about 6 inches longer than the other guy (he has a 12 inch reach advantage) is a huge, huge advantage?

One of my faves is the Silva/Griffin fight. But this fight I like to show to people because of how stupid it is, like a drunken brawl. Behold Don Frye vs Yoshihiro Takayama. Sorry for the music, can't seem to find one without crappy music.

I was watching that fight live on PPV back in the day and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The look on Takayama's face at the end says it all.

Yeah lol! It is amazing the damage Don did to his face. Takayama on the other hand must have pillow fists cause Don barely looked hurt.

Or maybe it was all blocked by the mustache?

I would definately rank his mustache second only to Magnum P.I.'s. I'm positive it kept his face from getting hurt.

For what it is worth, Same Elliot's 'stache rounds out my top 3.

Ooo. Didn't know this thread existed. Gotta check it out more. My wife and I love MMA. She watches twice as much as I do. All leagues, all levels.

UFC is going to have a ppv card headlined by Rhonda Rousey soon. I know it isn't popular but the women's fights were one of the reason I enjoyed strikeforce. UFC 157, should be interesting cause they don't have a bunch of female fighters unless they are going to finally merge strikeforce into ufc.

I mostly follow the MMA scene from afar, through conversations with coworkers and stuff, but isn't the problem with women's MMA simply that there aren't enough of them out there to keep it competitive?

I mean, I think Rousey is awesome, but I can only watch her submit so many other women in the first round with the same hold before the entertainment value disappears. Clearly she needs some better competition.

I think half the reason why women's MMA is kind of boring is that women just don't have the knockout power that men do. As a result, it pretty much just boils down to the better grappler taking her one or two shots on the way into a shoot, taking her opponent down, and doing a joint lock submission.

Roussey is an extremely one-dimensional fighter that way, but until a female fighter can demonstrate male power, it is going to continue to be the same script.

Cyborg punches like a man but she needs steroids to do so.

I'm a huge fan of women fighters and enjoy their game as much as the male fighter-rounds. I watch UFC and the other leagues as well, where there are more female fighters. There was this one bout where the women were trying to submit each other and being as light as they are, they kept rolling with the arm locks and leg locks. It was fantastic. Evenly matched all the way.

By the way, I can't stand boxing and find kickboxing insanely boring. Where's my ground game?!

Yup.

I know it would never ever ever be allowed, but I would pay to see a match between Roussey and a male flyweight. I think Demetrius Johnson, for instance, could give away 10 pounds and still have better punching power than anyone in the women's Bantamweight class.

Do you guys watch other fights or just UFC bouts? There's tons of great fights in other leagues as well as in UFC.

Totally agree with you about rousey. I was really hoping they could make the rousey/cyborg fight happen just cause cyborg is man strong which might prevent the armbar. Do you think Gina carino could come out of retirement and be a challenge to rousey?

We won't see a lot of female mma fighters until they get more exposure. There are probably a lot of female martial artist out there that could fill the role but they're one dimensional. It took how many UFC events before we started seeing true mma fighters? The early UFC events are funny to watch now cause of how one dimensional those fighters were.

Mainly just UFC but in the past I watched a lot of the venues that got bought up by the ufc. I am looking forward to bellator on spike.

I doubt it. The last interview I saw with her was shortly after she wrapped Haywire and she sounded unsure what she was going to do then, but since then I believe she's filmed two movies, been attached to the next Fast & Furious movie, and also cast in something else on top of that. It sounds like Hollywood's really giving her a solid shot in action films. I doubt she'll be coming back to UFC any time soon.

If they can iron out some of the woodenness in her acting I think that will work out great for her to be honest. It'd be great to see more movies with female action stars where the action scenes aren't all quick cuts and incredibly unconvincing bits of swinging arms and other silly stuff. Watching her beat the sh*t out of Fassbender was pretty refreshing.

So... actually, probably not just any time soon, but more like ever, if she keeps getting movie roles.

Which, IMO is fine, I don't get the impression she'd be a great matchup for Rousey or Santos again even if she got completely back in shape. Particularly if Cyborg manages to find a way to keep juicing

Ah you caught my edit. I couldn't find the article I read where it mentions the offer she turned down. That is cool she is doing so well in hollywood, had no idea.

Cyborg on the roids made for some freak show fights. Guess we'll know if she can't find a way when she shows up a lot smaller.

I used to love the WEC because (a) it was on free TV and (b) the lightweight fights are on average more interesting/exciting than the heavier weights.

Yes, the Leonard Garcia/Korean Zombie fight was a WEC production.

Thought I'd bump this thread up. Did anyone see UFC on Fox 6 last night? Thought it was a very good card. Raging I never got to see Clay Guida's fight.

That fight was really close and a classic matchup between workrate and technique. I have to agree with Joe Rogan that the judge that had it 30-27 for Guida needs to be banned from ever judging fights ever again.

How was Guida's performance then, he look good at the new weight?
