iPad Games (and Apps) Catch All

Won my first game of Battle of the Bulge last night on the short scenario, playing as the Axis against the easy AI. So, basically easy mode.

I pushed my armor hard in the north, with the infantry following behind to establish the line of supply. By mid-morning on the third day, a tank division had pushed through to the river, and I had a thin supply line that I needed to hold until the end of the day. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to prevent an allied tank division from engaging one of my units that was holding the supply line, creating an area that was contested. I couldn't get any units up to either push back the contesting tank, or link up a different supply line. Thinking I wasn't going to be able to get the full victory, I took some southern units and made a quick push through to Bastogne, securing it for the draw victory condition.

Dusk falls, and the end game summary comes up and declares me the winner, in spite of my contested supply line. Clearly, I need to review the rules for supply.

I'm really liking this a lot. This game seems pretty meaty. Time for a catch-all?

It is hard. My best time is 27.3.

Well what difficulty level are we talking about here? I have 30:42, 15:38 and 6:16 respectively, so if we're talking about the easiest one I'm the MAN!
I wonder how long one has to last to unlock the following levels. Is it 60s? In which case, Jeez.
Also, I gather you people are playing on iPad, but I'm mostly playing this on iPhone. Wonder how that affects the difficulty...

I don't remember my scores but I know I broke 70 seconds on the easiest level...

Also I'll send you a Stone Age invite at some point today.

Carcassonne has updated to v3.0, adding the Traders & Builders expansion!

Ticket to Ride HD dropped to $1.99 today

The Walking Dead, Episode 1 is free today. I hear it's an ok game ;)

I wonder why they are making episode 1 free only for a limited time. Why not have that episode free as a demo always?

Are the IAPs for the other episodes ever discounted? I already have the full PC version but it would be nice to get the iPad vision, too, for cheap.

I tried the iPad app, but the graphics are definitely downgraded, and it seemed to have frame rate issues on my iPad 2. I'm going back to the Xbox/Mac versions.

I'm really pleased that Ep 1 is free. I bought it on 360, loved it, and decided to wait until the whole game was out rather than playing chapters. Then the iOS version launched, and I decided that I would rather play on the iPad. All that stopped me was the double dip on Ep 1.

Lotsa zombies in my future!

Thumbs up.

I've never played the game before, but the tutorial did a good job explaining things. It is a deck building game with two resources (like Ascension) where you are buying one or more cards from several piles (like Dominion). There are also two "bosses" to fight, requiring 8 or more of one of the two resources to defeat. They reward powerful cards, and fully defeating one of the bosses is one of the end conditions (the other being depleting 6 of the decks). There is some interaction with "PVP" cards, and you begin with a character who has a special ability. There looks to be many cards available for the starting decks (you can view them all in game) which adds to replayability.

The program by Playdek is superb. It basically plays like Ascention, which is probably enough praise. You can play two to four players, with AI (3 levels) and/or humans. There is also ascynchronus multiplayer, which I haven't tried yet.

What may be make or break to you is the license. I enjoy Penny Arcade, so I enjoyed the theme. For example, the curse card in the game is called "PAX Pox," and many cards reference specific comics. The cards also have some unique audio cues (very short) and the music is chip tune like. If you hate Penny Arcade, you may not be able to look past the theme. However, many people were able to look past the art of Ascention, so your mileage may vary.

Overall, I'm very pleased. Consider yourselves enabled.

Enabling successful. Thanks Aristophan.

Yes! Demyx and I tried the physical copy at PAX East last year, it was a fun deck-builder, but it was something we decided we didn't need a physical copy of. Getting this one for sure.

D-Day Dice just got a surprise release for ipad at $4. Might be solo only, but that's all I usually wind up playing anyway.

Im thinking of that Penny Arcade game for the plane ride tomorrow. Keep posting impressions please! Especially pass-and-play systems.

More specifically: Is there any secret information between players that would ruin the game if we're basically both playing without moving the ipad?

So I'm not the man...

unless I lose (which I will), then

Though I did win the match against the tutorial AI, so watch out! So far seems like a great version of a complex and interesting game (hadn't played before, a lot to take in but pretty clear now after completing one match). More challenges welcome!

I think like Dominion and Ascension, the only secret information is just what's in your hand.

Have a safe flight!

Arc Squadron just went free. This game had pretty stellar reviews, I'd just held off on buying it because the shooters on iPad just aren't my thing. Free is a good price for a well-reviewed game that may not be in my preferred genre!

I started a catch-all thread for iOS boardgames.

And, while technically secret, there's not a ton of info given by playing open handed. The vast majority of your turns you'll use all of the cards in your hand anyway.

Free is definitely where it's at for this game. Difficulty ramps up pretty quickly, so the lack of price makes the IAP less painful.

I agree it's not a huge deal, but in Ascension if you know what your opponent has it becomes a major factor in your purchasing/banishing decisions. Not sure if there's a similar issue in PA.

I would think that is unique to the Ascension style where there's generally 1 of each card out there up for grabs. With the dominion style (which apaprently the PA game follows) you're not going to gain a lot from knowing what they have (unless there are lots of attack cards)

Good point, although the only case I can think of with Dominion is knowing if your opponent is going to go for a Province/Colony on their next turn.

From playing a few games of the Penny Arcade game, there are at least a couple instances where knowing your opponents cards would be a problem. There are 'PVP Attack' cards, and there are counters to those cards, so seeing what your opponent has would affect how you use both sides of that. Beyond that there would be just the times where there is only one of a stack left. So not as big a deal as in Ascension, but still probably a bit suboptimal.

Just got one of these suckers today, puttin my name in to get updates. Any killer things I need? I got angry birds Star Wars and RAD soldiers so far.

Cook, Serve, Delicious is a lot of fun. Accidentally lost a few hours to it tonight.
Link to it on the store.
Link to a giant bomb quick look of the pc version.

Bastion for $.99? Crazy!

GTA III and GTA: Chinatown Wars are also out for 99 cents. Good times.

Final Fantasy Tactics for iPad dropped to $9.
Tempting. Very tempting.
