LOTRO Goings On

Im interested in giving LOtr online a go, but windows 7 is really not supported?
thanks

Playing on Windows 7 here and it works fine.

Me too, still worked as of two weeks ago.

Works fine. They even have a Mac client now.

I've run on Win 7 for a few years now and LOTRO is fine on it. This article may be of assistance.

Been trying out some F2P stuff and it I've put in a few hours on this over the holiday weekend. Is there still a solid GWJ presence on Landroval? Seems like this thread has been pretty active.

I'll occasionally see 1 or 2 people in the GWJ channel, but in all honesty, while Landroval itself is a busy server, GWJ presence isn't. If you're enjoying the game, there's a whole raft of guilds and groups actively recruiting all the time though. Bounce me a note here or in-game if you want and input on the good, bad and downright ugly organizations on Landroval

My wife Kiri and I still play, her more than me. I've been distracted lately by other shinies, but she's pretty far into Rohan.

Good to know. I wasn't able to find a roster easily amongst the various threads. I'm Giann - Elf Minstrel in game. Ping me if you see me on.

Look her up as Feldrel. We can hook you up with our small but feisty kin, or just talk and help you out as you need. I'm occasionally on as Brindaur or one of my alts. Landroval, of course.

Giann, haven't seen you on yet... Friended you up though.

Appreciate it. I did too.. still slogging it out in the mid-teens on level. Will look for you guys.

My son just noticed the Mac client which would let us play together on the two machines in the house. I used to play WoW but haven't tried LOTRO yet. Does the Mac client work well? I'm guessing that's a relatively new thing because the LOTRO site doesn't even list it in the sys requirements page.

I jumped back in last week after a pretty lengthy absence (in Landroval). I got my brother into it, too. The intention was to team up right after the intro instance, but with him using a Hobbit out of Archet and me with a Dwarf on the other side of the planet, we were having a hard time getting in sync quest-wise. We're both re-rolling new characters (a human and a hobbit) to team up right off the bat.

I also started a dwarf to play solo; I really like the Thorin's Gate/Ered Luin region, and feel like it's a nice change of scenery after spending the last 20 levels with my other character in Bree-Land.

I just started playing this again, as well. I have a Human Captain at level 9. Currently in Combe. Name is Tkkyl. Feel free to message me in game. I'm always looking for a group.

Friend me up. Arhad, or Brindaur, on Landroval.

So I've thought about coming back but was wondering if the leveling is any faster than it was a couple year's back. I remember it seemed to take forever to get to level 50 - and I'd like to get to Rohan in a few days/played if possible.

Was this before or after they made most of the book quests soloable ?

JD, they have accelerated the time to level, but not so fast that you could get to 50 in a few days. And Rohan is 75, I think. My guess is that you could do it in a month or six weeks if you really geeked out and had some folks to quest with. I may be estimating high, though, I'm not up on speed-leveling.

But bear in mind, the game is *big*, and story-centric. It's more of a journey game than a destination game. No point in blowing through the various parts of the game just to get to one of them; they all have their highs and lows and differences.

This. I was surprised at the quality of the storytelling and how deeply they seem to draw from the lore. Even after doing the intro bits a few times now, I still take my time and read all the dialogue. It's definitely not something I'd want to power-game through, even if I were that kind of player. I take my time and soak in as much as I can, even stopping and just admiring a vista if the mood strikes me.

Right. There's a reason Turbine got the license, and the family has held them on a tight leash. No characters play evil roles, for example; in pvp, you play as yourself fighting against Sauron's forces, or a monster fighting for them. It is above all a game of stories.

Finally got my warhorse licence after going to driving school. God help anyone who fights me on horseback, it'll take them ages to get my blood off their armour. Bloody think handles like a Triumph Dolomite with a dodgy wheel bearing.

So, I'm still plugging along a couple nights a week. Just finished the starter area and moving on to Bree. I'm getting the feeling that I'll need a mount. Is that available for F2P?

Also, is there an equivalent of an auction house or exchange for crafting mats? So far, I've just been vendoring them.

I can answer my own question. While we're just starting, so far the Mac client is working fine. Very reminiscent so far of my WoW days but my son never played that and so far we're having a good time.

Gio, there are auction houses in each of the major cities, Bree included. You should save mats for crafting in your bank (also in major cities), or put them on the AH.

When do you play? Seems like you're on pretty late, US Eastern time.

I think you need to purchase the riding skill from the online store (100 Turbine Points, maybe?) then go to some farm North of Bree. When you hit a certain level (it's pretty early on), you should get a quest item giving you directions to said farm.

So I have my level 15 dwarf guardian I'm using for a coop game with my brother (a level 15 hobbit burglar), and my level 14 human hunter for solo play. I'm really starting to notice how much easier it is to run solo as a guardian; I've been overwhelmed more than once already with my hunter. I took the explorer vocation so I could make some awesome early-game medium armor, and have some excellent weapons, but I still have to be much more careful when I attack a mob of more than 2 people. He's super-fun to play, but I'm wondering how well I'll do with him as I get further along in the story.

I'm also seriously considering getting the expansion pack bundle on Steam - among all the awesomeness included, it unlocks two more character slots and the two extra classes. I really want to try the warden out for solo play.

Thanks for the heads up. My vault space has been eaten up by Task mats. I may need to economize a
bit. Seems like the crafting mats would be more valuable.

Im usually on pretty late. Been bouncing around between games but 9pm Eastern is a safe bet if I don't make it on earlier.

Bree seems to be a bit more populated than the starting area so it doesn't feel so desolate. And now there's a lot of meat quest wise. I was just more concerned about the long travel.

You do have to buy the skill (95 Turbine Points). However, you can earn Turbine Points by completing deeds in the game. I managed to earn enough points by about level 15. Now I'm level 21 and I almost have enough points to unlock another virtue slot.

There's a pocket item you can buy that boosts XP gain up to level 65, then another that lasts through 75. It's pretty expensive but if you're in it for the long haul, might be worth it.

Hengstacer Farm. I think you can get a starter horse at, I dunno, level 5 from the store? Not sure though.

Bear in mind, the game is balanced so that every class is viable in solo play. You will need to equip and build differently than you would for a group, and use your skills differently, but there's no class that's unsuited to solo play. Even Minnies can tear the place up solo. So don't lose sleep over that aspect of the game. What you *will* find is that different classes *do* play very differently, and that's a step up on a lot of games.
