Wurm

So, I've started up with Wurm again. I've added 2 months of premium to a character I had played last summer, and am playing on the "Carebear" non-pvp server Freedom. Whats more I've found a site to place a deed(only paying folks can place a deed), and will begin terraforming once I've finished up access to my mine. I'll have access to Iron on deed, am currently using a neighbors well for water, and am situated in an area that seems to have good hunting. Downsides? While I am near water, I'm situated far above it and it will take some time to build a path down to the water. Unfortunately I've been unable to scout that specific piece of coast line, but hopefully it's open for if/when I plug a path down to there. Access to clay is a bit of a trek as well, and I don't think I'll be able to alleviate that for some time.

If anyone is interested in trying out Wurm, or coming back, you can play on the Freedom server for free. Your skills will be capped at 20, and you won't be able to do things like command a cart being pulled by horses or cows. While I tend to play solo, I'm willing to help folks out getting started. I'm not necessarily looking to start a village, but I don't mind putting folks up for a while and show them the ropes. I can't offer much for ammenities at the moment seeing as I've only just tapped into an iron vein in my mine, and have not started construction on my settlement at all. But that stuff will come.

Map

I'm situated near the Eastern Plains(big brown spot on east side). /t Doanark Message if anyone is interested

They've been talking about this game a good bit on the Massively podcast. They've basically made it sound like minecraft with slightly better graphics and a more in-depth crafting system. The part that turned me off a bit was that they said you could literally sit there for 2 hours trying to craft a hammer before you finally got a successful outcome. Is that accurate?

At first I was going to go into detail why it's not exactly accurate, but that's beating around the bush a bit. Yes, I'd say it's fairly accurate. Things don't happen fast in this game, except for death when you accidentaly stumble into a troll. There is a TON of grind to this game.

I just play it as the ADD addled child that I am. "ooh, I'll do this" "cool" "ooh, I wanna do this. What do I need to do this?" I don't sit down and grind a specific skill like some folks will.

Ok, can't help it, I will go into a bit of detail as far as the hammer goes. Yeah it would have taken me a couple hours when I first tried it last year. Melting the Ore in a campfire took ages, and it was fail after fail. Now campfires melt ore much more quickly, but there is still the fail after fail when creating unless you have high skill in Blacksmithing or whatever.

After signing up to grab the trial I notice that as well as premium time the 'shop' also sells in game currency for real money. I despise MT systems, not sure how useful or necessary in game currency is in this case but the whole item/currency shop thing has always rubbed me the wrong way. (though I guess if the company offers it themselves it kind of negates gold farmers/sellers).

The biggest thing that you would do with the in-game currency is buy a deed form and pay upkeep on an established deed. A deed form costs 10 silver in-game, so 10 euro. So, if you wanted to venture off and start your own settlement/village/whatever you would have to get premium(10 euro for 2 months, or 10 euro for 1 month + 5 silver) and a deed form(10 euro). Once you have the deed form you can not lose it unless you give it away, or form a democratic village and are voted out of the mayor spot(Not 100% sure on that one). Once you plant the deed, there is a monthly upkeep cost. For a 15x15 deed + one guard I believe I'm around 1.5 silver/month upkeep cost. If I don't pay the upkeep, my deed would be removed and any buildings, fences, or other items I'd built there would slowly rot away. The deed form would just sit in my inventory until I log back in months later, and allow me to found another settlement. If you place a settlement, and decide you don't like it or want to move it, disbanding that settlement will remove the deed form from you possession and force you to buy a new one. It will also only refund 5 silver.

If you like, you can use silver to purchase items from other players. Also, other players are quite often looking for hired work so you don't necessarily have to pay out of pocket for your premium time. Once you get some skills up, you can start selling some items as well. People always seem to be buying boats, so that seems like a good direction to go if a person was looking to be in the money making business. I've only used the ingame currency to establish and maintain my deeds though. I'm more of the craft it myself variety of player.

Other than a very few select items, everything you would purchase in Wurm is player created.

I thought this was a thread about my WoW character...

Oh no, much more interesting than that.

So it's interesting and somewhat depressing. This game seems to be the closest we have to a "next gen" game. The players are writing their own stories.. the world is changeable. There seems to be a decent amount of "things to do" but its basically completely niche.

I found this "story" and became fascinated.. these are the kind of things that make (to me anyway) the core of a next gen MMORPG.

Apparently a notorious Player Kill was actually jailed by other players

http://www.wurmonline.com/newtown-ch...

And then I guess got bored being jailed and attempted to finally sell his account.

http://wurmonline.com/forum/index.ph...

Short of EVE what other game is really allowing this kind of interaction inside the game world.. not to mention I've seen amazing things that the players have built and maintain in this world. I'm sure its very newb unfriendly.. and of course the Graphics are fairly awful.. chances are PVE is pretty much pointless or "tacked on" but it doenst need to be.. with some $$ behind that aspect it could be amazing.

They used to talk about this game all the time on the Massively podcast. They made it sound like Minecraft with better graphics but harder and more intricate. While I loved the stories that came from the game, I just couldn't see myself chopping wood for 8 hours real time and then spending another week or two to build a fence. If I was going to do that I'd be better off just going outside and really building a fence.

Rolf, creator and owner/developer/god, has been working on Epic for some time now. From what I understand, Epic is taking Wurm to a more traditional MMORPG direction with quests and whatnot. When Epic is released I understand that you can take a character to Epic, where they will be reset to 0, and then you begin working towards an end goal with others. The current PVE and PVP servers will not be shut down, and standard Wurm play will continue in those places.

In other news, I allowed my deed and premium time to run out. I expect to log in for the first time in 3 months here in a few minutes, and will probably find my old deed completely gone or taken over by others. I'll do some thinking on it, and decide if I want to fire it back up or wait until I get laid off in October. If I do get started up again, I'll let the offer stand of giving anyone a hand with starting out once I get back on my feet again.

Also, here's the development teams blog.

Edit: Apparently I put enough money into the upkeep of my deed to last into September. Still deciding whether to pick up Premium and start playing again.

Ok, I ended up dumping more money in and started up playing again. I even added premium time to an alt, who I'm training up to be a priest some day. I plopped a deed down on the coast below my place, mostly so I can have my own docks.

Interesting news, after the Freedom server being open for several years now they're opening another server to the non-pvp crowd.

New Freedom server next week!
Tuesday, August 30, 2011
By Rolf Jansson - (The Boss)

Due to congestion and the relative difficulty of finding virgin lands on the current Independence server, we’ve decided that it is time to release a new Freedom server. We shall call it Deliverance and it will be the new default server for newbies.

This historical land rush event – the first in several years – is scheduled next Tuesday at 18.00 hrs CET (the 6th of Sept).

We have yet to prepare a few things like linking the servers and making sure the operating system is up to date but most things are good to go.

The new lands will be located south of the existing Independence server and you will be able to sail there. The only portal that leads to it will be from the tutorial server.

All you have to in order to participate in this event is to create an account on the tutorial server and wait at the portal area, or hang on the southern border of Independence.

Most welcome everyone!

Interesting situation, but since I invested in a second deed the night before this announcement I've decided not to pull up stakes and move to the new virgin land. I'm tempted to at least check it out some day.

It would be pretty interesting to settle onto the new lands, and watch them grow. The current map/server I'm on is looking pretty weathered. I've been back for several weeks, and have not seen a single wild horse to capture, mostly due to people hording them for breeding programs. Luckily a nice neighbor sold me a bull to pull my cart with.

I made the mistake of mentioning this game to my MMO buddies and, we will be trying it out soon. We tend to like the more free form, sand box stuff; we had a blast with Star Wars Galaxies.

Let me know how it goes Tigerbill. Just really curious to hear impressions from other folks.

I stopped playing about the time my son was born in early October and just checked back in a few days ago. The upkeep money had run out on my farm, but all the structures I'd built there hadn't decayed completely yet. I'd give them a month or two before they fall down. The neighbor who had slipped in between my active periods, and I believe was anticipating the decay of my farm early last summer appears to be building a pyramid like structure. I only have a few months of gaming left before I'll be on gaming blackout for the summer so I'm not going to bother trying to get things back into shape.

Are you guys going into PVP, or start on the PVE server. If you end up on Independence (PVE), I wouldn't mind hauling some supplies your way before the walls crumble on my cabin and the vultures move in. If my sailboat can be repaired back into working order I can make my way to any of the PVE servers.

I am on the Exodus server. How hard is it to get to one of the other servers? I'm not a fan of PvP in games like this; that is what FPS's are for.

Died at least 7 times within the first few hours. Once I found a good spot to build a 1x1 shack and learn stuff I haven't been killed since. Came close last night out exploring; black wolves are no joke at my level.

I spent seven hours yesterday exploring the coastline of our continent; couldn't find a good spot to build on that wasn't already settled. Covered damn near 1/3rd of the map. I've been squatting on someone's land but, they seem cool with it since I said I was temporary and promised to remove my shack when I leave. I really need to find a good iron ore vein so I can get into smithing. I might actually go premium for a few months (it's so damn cheap); it's a good distraction from SW:TOR (better crafting).

I'll post more when I'm not at work.

I have it downloaded but never played it. If you get some land I check it out and help you out.

I was able to hook my one friend by telling him there was fishing. He has an unnatural obsession with fishing in MMO's (since I showed it to him in SWG); that is his only strike against SW:TOR.

Just takes time, a fishing pole(or food brought along), and a favoring wind. I have a bunch of cotton(can be crushed for seeds) and wemp(used to make rope, can also be crushed to make seeds) which are hard to come by in the early game. If the sailboat is still useable, I can give you that as well. Bit of a pain to make, especially early on.

update: Sailboat is still useable, or will be once I've repaired and improved it back up to 10. I'll see about getting some stuff together and heading to Exodus in the next week or so. I just found that one of my deeds hadn't run out of money yet, so I can disband that and probably hand that over as well. Save you a few bucks if you're thinking about setting up a homestead or village.

Wow, awesome. We'll have to set up some time to meet up then.

I've been playing off and on for a while now and I still love it. What really helped me was setting up a little 1 room shack so I had a base camp to start from. I spent a large amount of time just walking around the map looking for a place to start my own settlement. Wanted water, woods, and rock to mine; couldn't find anything that was open that didn't have people near it. Luckily where I set up my shack there was a small deed ran by 3 guys that were very helpful; I asked if I could join their city and they accepted. They actually have two deeds close to each other and between the two I have everything I want.

My new house I just finished, is back in the woods overlooking a secluded little lake and we have several mines near by on deed. The other deed is along the coast and we are in the process of building a harbor. It is at the base of a steep hill that has some ore deposits on top. We have taken a few sail boats out and started to scavenge from abandoned deeds; so much stuff is just left to decay away.

After I joined them I went for a Premium account + silver. Once I get on my feet I will buy more time and, hopefully be able to sell stuff for the silver. I'm still working on balancing this with playing any other games. I tend to be laser focused when it comes to games. That isn't good for subscription based ones; I'm looking at you 6mnth sub to SW:TOR, I promise I'll come back.

Now that I have a permanent house, I need to start crafting better gear and, pick some skills to focus on. Mining will definitely be one of my highest gathering skills; maybe farming too. Not sure what crafts to work on for profit; thinking anything in the blacksmith line is a given. Always had fun tailoring in SWG; too bad clothes don't change the look of your char in this game.

I'll take the public shaming. I never got on to give you a hand Tigerbill. My apologies. I logged on weeks ago to check on things when I made that post on Feb 10th, but never hopped back in. I was thinking about getting on to at least send you a deed form, but it turns out I would need to buy more premium time to do that. Fortunately, it sounds like you fell in with some nice folks and have the supplies you need.

I might get back into this next fall when I return to online gaming, always looking for folks to play with.

No worries. My life got a little chaotic too and I didn't get to use most of my premium time. I just re-upped for another month and still have fun with it at least once a week.

Hello. I just discovered this game. I am now smitten, sight unseen, just having read this article at RPS.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010...

Who will give me a tour?

Looks like they went live.

I just jumped on as well. Was only really able to get past the tutorial, but I plan on jumping on later to continue exploring.

I haven't played since my last post here back in March. The small community I had my house in had the deed to the place so, I probably don't have anything left. I should still have money in the bank though, I guess.

Wurm has been on my mind lately. Maybe it's time for a Goodjerville.

This was my first day back online(an internet connection to call my own!) since March, so we'll see where my gaming tastes lead me. It would be somewhat fitting to hop back in for the release on the 12th. It has only been in Beta for 6.5 years.

I added 2 months of premium to my main(Doanark), "acquired" a rowboat, and am setting out from Independence for Celebration. My old deed on Independence rotted away completely, and the neighbors settled over the land where it was. Not unexpected, I could feel them breathing down my neck waiting for me to leave. What they've built in that area over the past year is quite impressive.

With the release of 1.0, it sounds like there will be a new server with virgin land only accessible to brand new characters. Eventually they'll link it up with the current PvE server cluster, but they'll give it some time to be developed by new characters.

I'll be scouting for a good spot to settle on Celebration tonight hopefully.

edit: Maybe not tonight, can't leave independence with a boat I don't own.

This game is good. Seriously good. I dove in headfirst, right into the Elevation server (the free-for-all pvp one), and luckily found a nice group of folks to join up with after a few hours.

This is the next best thing to Ultima Online 2 that I've found.

I see this and DF:UW have the same release date and I'm almost tempted to try one.

Is there space for casual players here? My understanding of the skill system is that, like DF, whoever has the most time to grind will end up far ahead.

It depends on what you want to do. Me, I'm actually all up into the crafting, and there's plenty of niches to fill in that. In the Ivalice Trading Company (the alliance I joined) I'm making myself useful in the early phases of skilling up by making lots of basic materials; bricks, planks, hull planks, etc. The settlement is burning through them faster than we can make them, so it's nice to have a few newbies like me to get us up and off the ground (I'm also happy that I stumbled across not only a nice group, but one working on a relatively new settlement, so I can be a part of putting it together!).

However, as my carpentry continues to improve, I'm moving into shipbuilding, since we only have one person with moderate shipbuilding skill, and it'll help to have a skilled shipwright. I'm more interested in sticking with that skill than the other guy, so that'll be my niche until I can branch off until more skills too.

[edit]I may eventually get interested in combat, but for now I'm actually more interested in being an artisan supporting the kingdom!

Keep us posted Farscry. I'm very curious what your perspective on the PVP will be. Me, I'm too chicken to check it out.

I've spent the past 4 days building a shack, cart, and collecting materials to build a small sail boat. I'm close to completion, and then I'll be heading out for Celebration from Independence. It will take a bit to get there since I'll have to travel through the Deliverance and Exodus servers to get there.

So far, Druidpeak, as long as you get in with a friendly settlement and stick within town doing crafting, it doesn't seem like the pvp is too dangerous yet. I've been on when alliance members are travelling and get ambushed out in the wilds though. And I do know that raids have happened, but I'm not too familiar with how that all works yet (and haven't been in a location that's being raided yet). The Wurmpedia seems rather light on documentation of how raids and siege warfare work.

I'm not near the point of building something that utilizes it yet, but I'm pretty excited about the new mechanics allowing for multi-story buildings! I'm still focused on developing my shipbuilding skill to be one of the primary shipwrights for my alliance.
