I just bought a GTX 280. Feel free to comment on how stupid I am.

I'm still rocking the AMD 5770 I bought with Dragon Age: Origins more than 2 years ago. Never had any driver issues whatsoever, and I play oldies as well as the latest and greatest. It runs everything at full HD without any hiccup, mostly at max settings sometimes just below that.

If I were still at 19x12, I'd still be on the 5870; the only reason I went to the 680 is because I'm at 2560x1600, and at that resolution, even the 680 is maybe a little under-powered. It's tough to push that many pixels.

We must be playing very different games.

What he didn't say was that he was running "full HD" on a monitor with a native resolution of 1024x768!

Short of a 670/7950+ (and even those cards might struggle) you aren't playing Far Cry 3 at max details at 1080P. Good news is that both camps SLI/Crossfire scaling efficiency is off the charts these days.. (with a specific game exception here and there).

Granted I just realized that maybe some people are ok with 24fps or something... I need to see at least 60fps constant.. I can tolerate a dip here and there but for the most part as soon as I see a noticable dips in firefights I shut down and start looking to upgrade...

Right now I'm screwed until AMD released the 8000 series.. I can't play Far Cry 3 right now on my main rig... just runs like crap.

It's glorious on a single 2560x1600 screen with a 680, but aren't you driving something like three of those screens?

Wait, so there are people out there who don't buy a new top-of-the-line video card every two years whether they need it or not? What a bunch of weirdos.

Heh; I usually upgrade every couple years to a mid-range current-gen card. It's not as if I don't get tons of mileage out of them.

...I'm not sure whether to follow that with a smiley or a sad face.

correct.. 3 HP 30"... most [H]'ers are reporting less than perfect results with a single 680 at 1440P let alone 1600P.. you maxed everything out and still keep 60fps?
