Planetside 2 Catch-All

I have a 3.4x scope for my vanu lmg (last time I checked, 4x and above greatly reduces peripheral vision). It helps a lot in medium and far ranges. For close up battle though, I have finally figured out that it's just better to fire from the hip (firing without pressing the second mouse button). That might also be what reflex sights are for.
I also have a HV scope for my Light Assault. It's like Christmas! I am also saving up 1000 certs to get the carbine that allows me to get the underbarrel attachments.
I finally figured out what Indar is good for, night fighting!

grenades, if you find a hidey-hole, throw one down
enemy over the hill? throw one down
open window? throw one down!

re: turrets: They are murder when deployed in a biodome. It seems to me they've increased the bullet spread since beta.

Got to says that I am very disappointed with the C4 I unlocked for my light assault. I am only able to carry one of them at a time plus I didn't realize I needed to spend infantry points on them. They also don't do as much damage as I would like them to do.

Hopefully my opinion will change after over better at light assault and use the c4 more.

You kidding? They take off 75-80% of a Magrider. Had it happen to me twice in succession, luckily I repaired before the second hit.

Don't think about k/d or living and dying, think about the mission. Create an objective for yourself and do it (if solo).

What are people's thoughts on spawn camping?

It's a silly part of the game but ultimately necessary. Make no mistake, until the spawn generator is destroyed it is perfectly possible for the defending team to break the cordon and make a comeback. Particularly if they MAX crash you.

Filthy skimmer!

I need to double check but I'm pretty sure you can change the eject key while in a vehicle and not affect the use key for other vehicles. The keybindings for on-foot, ground vehicles and aircraft are totally separate.

Someone might find this useful. A sheet with all the weapon stats.

I was waiting for this, thanks.

EDIT: The list includes all of the infantry gear, except for MAX weapons and melee stats (no deployables like grenades, mines or turrets either. I hope someone does those because I tried out the different anti infantry weapons for the Vanu max and I can barely tell the difference between them. Some of them don't match the store description.

EDITEDIT: WOW, HOLY CRAP. Okay I forget who mentioned it to me but in a recent conversation someone said that using higher graphic settings might offer better performance than slumming things on low. My reasoning behind this theory is that when you set graphics to low the game assumes that you have a poor graphics card. To make up for this it delegates more of the number crunching to your CPU. Generally speaking this works, but with Planetside the CPU is the problem and not the GPU. Any little thing that frees up CPU cycles is a benefit.

Well, it works! Colour me surprised! I simply set everything to high. My FPS flying around the sky is AMAZINGLY better than it used to be. Close quarters twitch stuff is no worse off, still a bit hitchy. I later turned off shadows again and my performance improved.

(note the 60 fps, what black magic is this? Before I tried this the only place I could get a steady 60 was in the warpgate by staring at a wall)

There are many games with better graphics out there. But the sheer SCALE of planetside can be mind boggling sometimes. Imagine playing PlanetTribes on this map.

Another very very interesting thing I discovered is that infrared optics look different on high settings. On low you have a sort of monocrome green view of the world without sharp outlines. Also it had a limited vision range of around 300m after which all you could see was a black wall. On a bright day it can be hard to pick out infantry. But after changing my settings it now looks like this:

IMAGE(http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/885220040462895931/1821018FF9A8503E389CF148D08069E22D65006E/)

Everything you can shoot is marked in BRIGHT green, almost white. If you get close enough you can even see the details on stuff! The background is also hazy but usable for navigation. The terrain is also a lot clearer, instead of using crude green gourad shading everything is very crisp and sharp.

It could be that SOE made some changes to the game in recent days that helped with this. If you have a decent CPU and a good graphics card give this a shot! Boot up PS2, max out the graphics using the login screen settings menu. Then restart. You have nothing to lose! You can always turn it back.

Haha that was pretty funny when he asked that.

For the air vehicle pilots out there, what control scheme are you using? What is your keyboard setup like, and are you using a joystick? How do you set your sensitivities?

I see some really slick maneuvering over head by some guys and I'm wondering how they pull it off.

-First: Rebind Eject (E) to something like U. it will save many accidental ejects from trying to reload.
-Second: Turn up your flight sensitivity to your liking. Anything above the default will give you better turn speeds.
-Third: If you played and Battlefield games, think of these as helicopters because thats really how they control.
-Fourth: As you turn use the vertical thrust (space) feature. You will turn even faster

Actually I don't think that is entirely true. Pitch, yaw and roll speeds are capped by the game. Upping your sensitivity only makes it easier to turn at maximum speed because you need less mouse movement. I run with my sensitivity set to 75. One downside of this is that there isn't separate sensitivity for flight, it controls ALL vehicles. This is fine for tanks generally speaking because those have a lot of mass. But manning secondary turrets can be difficult sometimes.

I don't think that's true

That is my son's account. he has 3 kills.
the chart shows 3 kills. It is a chart of what classes your account has killed.

Oh, maybe that's true. I just know that it showed about 100 infiltrator kills, when I haven't played infiltrator at all.

Edit: I'm wrong.

Thinking of jumping in for the first time ever tonight.

I'm so doomed.

Groan, thanks for the link!

Oh, and if you don't think you can play this game solo.. I play it solo as an engineer + get about 50 certs/hour.

http://www.planetside-universe.com/c...

Mines are your friend. Your explody friend of pain and death.

The game is not really meant for solo play. Yes, you can sort of solo a little bit, but the game is also about attrition and controlling spawn locations, and if you're playing solo you don't have the support structure to make attrition work in your favor. Mines help a lot, and they're fun to use. However, they also require an up-front investment of certs, and new players will almost certainly be better off spending their first certs on things like weapon optics.

Yeah, be careful of following the advice of BR19 users with a K/D ratio of nearly 2. Any game is easy if you're, you know, really good at it. =)

Agreed! Take my advice. My K/D ratio is 0.13!

I agree, but it is also possible to help in other ways. I have been playing for awhile so I know the choke points and where to trap the armor.. I usually find a base that we are attacking/under attack and mine an approach that armor uses. Or if I am lucky and find a Sundy I mine that.. two get a kill and it works on deployed sundy's. People never really guard their sundy's effectively.

Mines help a lot, and they're fun to use. However, they also require an up-front investment of certs, and new players will almost certainly be better off spending their first certs on things like weapon optics.

300 certs for the 3 mines.. 2 are just as effective for 100 certs. Just the forward grip costs 100 certs + scope + IR for night fights. I am not fully advocating this choice for someone new to the game, but this is an avenue that you can take that will be effective in destroying tanks/sundy's.

It's ah-me. http://www.planetside-universe.com/c...

Yeah, I play mostly solo too. I tend to play infiltrator/flanker type roles that support a solo style of play anyway, certainly gets me a lot of kills.

That's way out of date, I'm rank 17ish now, with a lot more kills than that. I'm pretty sure my K/D ratio has actually gotten better as well.

http://www.planetside-universe.com/c...

Yeah I don't think those class played stats are right, I almost never play infiltrator. And that time played can't be right

Also I now know what you QD folk were referring to about the teamspeak tirades. Had my first encounter with the previously mentioned problem child. I stopped playing after 2 minutes of nonstop whining and complaining.

Downloaded the game. Hit play. "Planetside2.exe has stopped working." Tried it a handful of times; I'm fully updated in terms of drivers, running Windows 8, and have found only cursory remarks in the forums about changing to a 64-bit OS (which Win8 is).

Ah, well.

That's likely your entire problem right there. That piss-poor tablet port of an OS isn't ready for prime time, especially for gaming.

Crappy OS rant aside, check to see what the extended details of your error are. Windows 8 issues with Planetside 2 are legion, but the most common ones involve needing to re-install DirectX or remove any and all USB gaming accessories until you find the one that's causing the problem.

Normally I'd recommend you just Google "Planetside 2 Windows 8 crash", but there are so many hits on that search that Planetside 3 and Windows 9 would likely be out before you could read through them all.

Whether or not it's crappy, it's also substantially the same as Windows 7 from an OS (not user-space) perspective. As you note, there are massive numbers of crashes being reported across both systems. I spent ten minutes or so digging into the forums, and finally decided that while I'm interested in the game, it's not worth the time to get it working; my days of fighting to play a game are essentially over.

I believe those stats, if you are referrig to the bar graphs, are of which class has killed you. Not which class you've played.

Getting to play with people without this kind of drama is the whole reason I joined GWJ in the first place.

We have more than enough GWJ people to make a platoon, why not pick a day for some casual group play? This would also be a great way to introduce new people, because the game is rather daunting even if you are familiar with this kind of game. Hell even playing the original planetside isn't of much use.

I would be down with a GWJ-only casual day. If you're not laughing when you're playing, then you're doing it wrong.

Ah, well.

I'm not sure if this bug is still in the game, but if you have a controller plugged in when you launch PS2 it crashes. So that might be it.
