Yes, James Bond movies are getting more violent (in case you wondered)

Violent acts in James Bond films were more than twice as common in Quantum of Solace (2008) than in the original 1962 movie Dr No, researchers from New Zealand’s University of Otago have found.

The researchers analysed 22 official franchise films, which span 46 years, to test the hypothesis that popular movies are becoming more violent (The latest Bond film, Skyfall, was not included as it was unreleased at the time of the study). They found that rates of violence increased significantly over the period studied and there was an even bigger increase in portrayals of severe violence: acts that would be likely to cause death or injury if they occurred in real life.

Incidents of Bond raping women, however, are down sharply (Im assuming Craig doesn't rape anyone in this movie)

The general format of James bond movies is calm->action->calm->action. In the calm parts they usually stick a bunch of sexual(limited to 1 or 2) or subduction scenes (also fairly limited). There is usually at least one scene of gambling. In action packed scenes they usually put whatever they want but it's usually gadget related and they are usually fairly long. It's common for James to use the weapon of his enemies, use hand to hand combat(at least one scene) , car chase with car weapons are common but they don't always overemphasize the car(one or two scenes and it goes boom).

I think the fact the movies are getting more violent is to adjust to the taste of the audience. James Bond movies are action movies where people get killed often and sometimes in unusual ways. Supporting or lead roll can be killed through the movie. Maybe the excessive violence can be explained by the fact budgets are bigger these days.

I'm not an expert on James Bond movies but I've watched quiet a few ;).

You're making me thing of Monty Python. You mean, you were raped!?

Well, at first, yes.

edit* I will say that of all the tragic first Bond girl deaths in the films, Skyfall's was the saddest and most tragic for me.

Newsflash: Bond, as envisioned by his creator, was already way more violent than the crappy cheeseball version of him that made it into the older movies.

People doing this study must be allergic to books.

This.

I think the author once described Bond as a psychopath covered by a thin veneer of civilization.

The new Bond movies are definitely more like Ian Fleming's Bond, and they're as violent as expected. The only thing I've found unusual/funny is the amount of alcohol in Skyfall. Yeah, we're told James has a drinking problem, but the movie has a drinking problem too. I started noticing it a few scenes in. It got to the point of being funny.

That's why I like Craig-as-Bond. That's exactly how he comes across to me.
