Gaming Confessions & Blasphemy

Mario Galaxy made me disoriented and nauseous and I hated the game for this. No game should be make you feel ill.

I did a silly-name playthrough of Final Fantasy 7 once in which I renamed Barret "Mr. T."

At one point, Aeris calls him "Mr. Barret," which lead to this classic exchange:

Aeris: Thanks, Mr. Mr. T!

Barret: MISTER Mr. T? That don't sound right!

My first FFVIII playthrough followed the exploits of the emo hero, PZIMP. Still have that save.

On another online forum years ago, a running joke regarding, well, ass-raping baboons started. I purchased a version of Madden around that time, and, as baboon was surprisingly one of the logo options for custom teams, I chose that, and they were, of course, from the city of "Ass Raping". The first time I called timeout, it announced in big letters across the screen, "TIMEOUT - ASS RAPING". I still think it's hilarious, and I'm 42 years old.

When it first came out, I brought Zelda: The Wind Waker to my best friend to show it to him. At the naming screen, he chose something equally juvenile. This led to a classic line at the very start of the game, where my little sister exclaims: "Happy Birthday, Ass!"

...I still giggle at the implied resentment.

Oh ASS. That guy must be some kind of Video Game Wizard, since he seems to have high scores on every arcade game ever.

Along with DIK, FUK, and SEX. There was also a guy that thought he was all that apparently, naming himself AAA.

Here is my confession.

I may be leaving gaming behind.

I will be going on another Navy Med Cruise mid next year and due to my rank and position in the command, I pretty much don't see myself doing any gaming for the eight month period.

It sucks because I love gaming but, although I will have my own desk, it will be in the middle of a very busy office that is manned 24 hours a day so no gaming there and my position dictates that I don't game in the workcenter anyway. I won't have a "room" since I'll be out to sea on an aircraft carrier. This will be my private space, one of these:

IMAGE(http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p529/infromsea/rack-04b.jpg)

So, that means I'm down to gaming in my rack which means a DS, which I own and don't really enjoy, or a vita, which I have no knowledge of and don't know if it would "fit the bill". I can say the DS doesn't fulfill my gaming needs (mostly PC with a little PS3 for good measure). I could always go down to one of the workcenters with a console but, due to my position and rank, that's not acceptable and would be frowned upon if I did something like that on a regular basis. I could stop in for a quick session but really, any more than that would put me in a bad light.

So, for about 8 months, starting mid next year, I will pretty much cease to be a gamer. Will that be the straw that breaks the gamer's back? Will that be the point at which I stop being a gamer and move on to other hobbies like woodworking and canning fruits? I've always wondered if that would happen, and if it does, when and where. I had a feeling it was coming. I'm about the only gamer I know in my demographic, my age and rank group at work and what have you. Maybe I just need to look around a little more for other gamers but for now, I see a dry spell coming and possibly, the end of my illustrious gaming career.

Blah. You'll be back. 8 months isn't that long. I've gone through a strench of a year where I couldn't play anything, and I've had a friend in the Air Force who's made it through equally long periods of non-gaming. It's just an interruptiong, but an ending unless you want it to be.

I'd say give the Vita a try since Sony is really, really trying to make it a portable PS3 at this point.

At least when you return, 'new' releases will be very much discounted, and you can pick up a few for the price of one!

Tim, thank you for serving, first off. Secondly, I've heard the Vita is amazing, so maybe that'll get'cha buy for now. You can also download games to it, so you might never run out. Just get a big 32 gig card for it.

Tim, don't worry about it. Be like me and many others here; vicariously game through the weekly exploits of the GWJ podcast crew.

And when you do have some precious few minutes at the end of your duty day to call your own before racking out until your next shift, pull out an iOS device, a 3DS, a Vita, or a laptop and defend your house from those pesky zombies with your encyclopedia of skilled plants, or bird to death some egg-stealing pigs. Or find a few like-minded others and play a Madden season, one game per actual week for each player. You can't tell me the common areas won't have some version of Call of Duty set up, so hop on once in a great while. As long as you're skilled and competitive, no one will invent poor perceptions of you, regardless of the rank disparity....just so long as you're not playing Sparkle Pony Adventure (or establishing an area your EO/POSH officer would be concerned about).

You mentioned being on a medical tour...so everyone there will be the first ones to tell you to properly manage your stress level. If that means games occasionally, then so be it.

Wow that sucks. I have several buddies still the Army who are senior NCOs but still able to occassionally hop on and play Call of Duty or Halo with their troops. That being said, I've also heard the Navy is far more rank conscious than the Army.

Are you able to bring board or card games at least?

He, I do the same. My gunslingers's hawk in Torchlight 2 is named Kawk.

I name mine after Japanese porn stars, but only in RPGs.

I think this post wins the award for most easily-identified as a confession.

I hear ya Mantid. I could see myself "leaving it all behind" when I get back. That long of a break will put a lot of space between me and the hobby. Like I said, I have often wondered if I would look back and say "hey, I stopped gaming, when did that happen?" as I've done with other things in life. Sometimes life just has a way of happening to you when you aren't looking.

I've looked at it and man, they have got to get their game lineup in gear, right now, I can't see a single title that interests me. COD looks like a turd, the RPG isn't my style, the battle royal won't be a lot of fun alone..... I don't know if this will pan out, keeping an eye on it though.

Great point, something I do now anyway, have yet to buy ME3 although I REALLY want to play it. I'm a cheap ass gamer and should be able to really scoop up some steam deals.

You're welcome Veloxi. It's been my pleasure, it's a tough gig but worthwhile.

That's good advice and I follow it now. I almost bought a wii U the other week just because the crew was talking about it. I came to my senses before too much damage was done. I'm a spend-thrift but the talk about zombie whatever just has me enthralled. I'm always looking to create those family friendly moments around gaming and I thought the wii U would do that, I just bought a couple of cheap wii family games instead.

I could jump in a game here and there but to spend more than a few minutes every now and again would put me in a light I don't want/need (I'm very anal about my reputation at work). The days of sitting down for an afternoon of gaming just won't happen. Card games are easy, you can almost always find a game of spades to join, beyond that, not so much.

The biggest issue is that very few others in my demo are hard core gamers, many of them are into other hobbies like "shudder" watching endless TV or other (in my opinion) time wasters like staring blankly at bulkheads.

Tim

I Have played 0 hours of Xbox Live but have owned a Xbox and a Xbox 360.

I have never played WOW.

I have a addiction to buying even the crappiest games, if their on sale.

A lot of people are dead to me because of this thread, but this one in particular is worth pointing out.

I lol'd. I'm amazed how differently we all see videogames. Makes me think, is there one game we can all agree is at least good?

People think Portal sucks. People think Mario sucks. People think Metroid sucks. People think Half Life sucks. People think Baldur's Gate sucks. People think Mass Effect sucks. People think Elder Scrolls sucks. People think Uncharted sucks. People think Halo sucks. People think Deus Ex sucks. People think Final Fantasy (insert number here) sucks. People think Starcraft sucks. People think Bioshock sucks. People think Batman sucks. People think The Walking Dead sucks. People think GTA sucks.

In other words, no.

Easy.

Small iteration on one of my confessions (since it's a thing I keep thinking about as of late):

Gaming has stunted my growth as a human being.

However, it did introduce me into this wonderful community, which has exposed me to mind opening things like Idle Thumbs (critical appreciation of stuff), Three Moves Ahead (design deconstruction), and to a point, Day[9] (how to analyze stuff, break it down, improve it).

I've also made contact with very many interesting human beings, some of which are on this thread, most on this site.

Making up for lost time now, re-balancing myself.

I enjoy the excitement of the Spike VGAs, even though it's a complete travesty and turned out to be the Samuel L. Jackson power hour. It probably helps that, this year, a lot of the winners were actually good games, including The Walking Dead and Journey walking away with a ton of awards. I don't know what it is, though I did see that the voters were basically just about every major gaming publication from IGN to the likes of Polygon. Maybe this has something to do with it?

But even then, they only showed about five awards and spent most of the time on trailers. I think this is a deep reflection of the games industry, where people view the money is in the unreleased game rather than the ones on the shelf. It's a marketing scheme based on hype. Not to mention that, all in all, it was the Samuel L. Jackson power hour.

But at least there was a lack of scantily clad women on stage. Last year was horrible in that regard.

What I perhaps really enjoyed about it, though, was the discussion that it still managed to generate with friends, right down trying to figure out better ways to categorize non-shooting games aside from "action adventure".

I'm honestly surprised that the VGAs haven't yet turned into a review of metacritic scores balanced against sales numbers with just all commercials brought to you by Mountain Dew and Dorritos. I watch the trailers the next day, just like I watch the commercials for the Super Bowl while playing video games all night.

So Capcom has officially gone insane, creating Megaman vs Street Fighter.

Just thought I should remind ccesarano that Capcom decided to use the BEST of the Megamans --Megaman 2-- as the foundation for this game:

and not that weird Megaman X he keeps talking about.

cheers and happy Holidays y'all.

Actually that's a fan-made creation that they decided to go and put out there. So Capcom didn't even make it.

And I think we can all tell that fans can be wrong.

That looks really cool. It's obviously not going to be Megaman X. That game title would be too confusing.
Megaman X Street Fighter

EDIT: It did look more fan-made to me. I should have been suspicious about the lack of DLC. Glad that Capcom wanted to publish it though.

It's a desperate attempt to gain favor with fans after they've offered little more than an iPhone game for the blue bomber's 25th Anniversary.

Maybe I'm a cold robot, but anniversaries of games don't mean much to me.

For the last few years, me and my girlfriend's anniversary routine has been to comb through our e-mails to figure out when our first date actually happened, realize that we're both insanely busy that day, then do nothing more than resolve to f*ck a little more than usual.

My wife and I, prior to getting married, tried to do an anniversary of when we first started talking on eHarmony. Problem being that by that point, we had both cancelled our subscriptions. She says it was August 28th, I say August 26th, and we compromised by celebrating on the 27th.
