2013 - 12 month pile thread. Hello New Year, good bye pile!

This is just a suggestion but I'm wondering if this year we could add a "played" title to the pile list. This would be for unplayed games in your Steam account/bookshelf that you at least gave a good faith effort in trying even if you don't finish it.

To qualify, you have to pick a game you haven't played AND give it a good faith effort in beating. What that means would be up to you, but I'd say at least 2 hours for indy/casual/arcade games, at least 5 hours for an average AAA title, and maybe 10 hours for a long RPG or strategy game.

I recognize I may be cheapening the whole idea of the pile, but I have so many unplayed games in Steam I'd at least like to feel like I havent wasted all that money even if I'm not going to finish each game.

PS - Backloggery supports this as you can move a game from unplayed to played without having to mark it as completed.

So I figure there is strength in numbers, and that I really, really need to slow myself down with the games buying, and try and reduce my backlog. I created a Backloggery account, started filling it, and then got depressed by the number of games I own but haven't actually played. I'm literally drowning in my pile, I need to get on this wagon! No more Steam sale for me, I'm cut off!

I still maintain, filling in a Backloggery account, or doing a definitive list of all your games in some format or another, is the biggest (and best) eye opener available to us.

Well done!

Agreed. There are games like Terraria and Binding of Isaac that I really wanted to like and play, but ended up just getting frustrated and never finished or played for more than an hour. I figure, at least I launched and gave them a shot.

The first step in solving a problem is admitting you have one, right? I'd used Steam categories to file games into "Good Games", "Very Good Games", "Played", "To Play" and "Current", but somehow, typing them in makes it really hit home!

Before I cull some games from my list, I have a few questions:

1) Do your choices in Dragon Age: Awakening matter at all in Dragon Age 2?

2) Did your choices in Dragon Age: Origins have any impact on Dragon Age 2?

I feel the answer to these can influence my thoughts on whether I should play those, as I still plan on grabbing Dragon Age 3.

The decisions, in hindsight, seem much more personal with little longterm/cross-game stuff being affected. I would say, "Play them to enjoy them - this series isn't going be concerned much with them. "

Your choices in DA:O do affect Awakening (I'm going to avoid spoilers, but it does more than affect cameos).
DA:O & Awakening have little impact on DA2, though, aside from some name dropping (what's up with your Warden, for example), and a few character cameos. All in all, nothing game-altering, but it's fun stuff.

Hrm. Well in that case, I may just get rid of Dragon Age: Awakening, as for some reason I have very little interest in it. I played a couple hours and never went back, and if it doesn't have an effect on the other games, well, meh. Plus, my primary Gray Warden

Spoiler:

sacrificed himself

, which is the end I'd rather have carry on in the future of the universe.

I'll give Dragon Age 2 one more shot, and if it starts to become a chore then it'll just be time to trade it in.

Unfortunately I fear that this may occur, the 4th time you have to run through the same dungeon...well...becomes a bit chore-ish

Awakening is still worth a playthrough, it's not that long, and has interesting characters (I'm really fond of Nathaniel, Anders, Sigrun; even Velanna is interesting even though I hated her guts ). However, regarding your spoiler:

Spoiler:

Since your Grey Warden died, you'll play as an Orlesian Warden, which is very interesting, from a political point of view, I guess.

Regarding DA2, yes, the repetitive dungeons are a giant pain, but I really liked it, because of the character interactions and the whole "story of Hawke" spin. It's worth a try, definitely.

I think I need an intervention, I keep looking at the Steam sale for FTL. Must... resist!...

Leave it on your wish list. Wait for the Christmas Sale. I wanted it too at that price, let's promise each other we don't cave.

What happened to "let's promise each other we won't cave"? Thanks a bunch though m0nk3yboy, that sure put me on the road to recovery!!!

How many hours would you estimate Awakening takes?

As for spoiler.

Spoiler:

I didn't want to just start with a random Grey Warden, so I did start it with my secondary Grey Warden, a female elf from the city slums. I figure I'll use her since I like her two handed combat, plus some of her choices were really interesting as well.

Most definitely. I buy maybe one game a month, but after about 20 years of gaming it really starts to add up. Plus, getting a game or two every Steam sale does a lot more damage than you realize.

(Brought to you by someone with 200+ unfinished games on his Backlog account.)

Luggage's code of backlogger conduct

  • I solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.
  • I will not shop for games unless I actually plan to buy something and play it right away.
  • I also pledge to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group and play them all the way through right away.
  • In addition, I allow myself 4 wildcard purchases, one per quarter. Wildcard purchases can be new releases or games on sale that were not declared by 01/01/13.

Humm.... I'd say maybe ten hours, more or less. It's been a while, I bought it and played it on launch, so that was a while back, my memory's a bit fuzzy. It's an expansion, after all, not a full game.

I think this comes down to how you feel about the game once you have given it a fair shake. For example, in 2013 I logged Diablo 3 as abandoned, because I came away pretty disappointed after 60h of play and none of my characters reached level 60 or the end of hell difficulty. Guild Wars 2 I also logged as abandoned, because I played it to level 30 and felt overwhelmed by choice, but undermotivated by the "sameyness" of it all. World of Warcraft I put a shameful ~200h into and I have no problem logging that as complete, because I got the point they are trying to make with MoP and I am thankful the grindyness turned me off MMO's for what I hope will be forever. Then again there was sparkleponies, which I logged as abandoned, because a joke only carries itself so long and even building a script that clicked the rainbows for extra money while I was away at work didn't help the fact, that I am not the demographic for this game.

As for myself, I seem to have my 2013 work cut out for myself. Currently playing 4 games, 30 owned and unplayed, 6 anticipated new releases and 21 want to buys. That's 61 games and with an average playtime of 25h, we're looking at ~1500h or 2-3 years at my current rate of hours/month.

I also changed my approach to impulse or hype purchases. I'll allow myself 4 wildcards, with 1 unlocking every quarter. They can be used for undeclared titles, be it new releases or old stuff on sale. Since I went through the 2012 and 2013 releases list on Wikipedia, I should have everything I am interested in on my list anyway. This way, I can purchase a maximum of 1 undeclared title in the upcoming Christmas sale, but up to 3 undeclared titles during the summer sale, if I am resolute until then.

Awakening took me about 30 hours. I enjoyed it quite a bit. The variety of areas and general art direction was a huge improvement over Origins, the new characters were compelling (Nathanial, Anders, and Justice were my favorite), and the new abilities for each class were really fun (I wish you could have used them in Origins when the expansion is installed). The biggest downside is that the story makes little to no sense, and that's even with reading the novel The Calling which explains the villain's backstory and motivations. The smaller character stories were good though, which are typically BioWare's greatest narrative strength.

I had exactly that amount left in my steam wallet, it was you or me. I figured you might get to it first

So I've heard 10 hours and 30 hours for Awakening. One sounds doable, the other not worth it. Maybe I should consult "How Long to Beat".

14 - 21 hours seems to be the damage, depending on how much you get into the nitty gritty. They average it out at 17.5, give or take.

I expect to have less time for gaming next year so I might need to rearrange my pile some, but here's my list.

Not Started

  • Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2
  • Mass Effect
  • Final Fantasy VI *
  • Bastion
  • Fez
  • New Super Mario Bros. II
  • Ratchet and Clank *
  • Torchlight
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask *
  • 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
  • Okami
  • Persona 4
  • Cave Story

* These are games I have played before, but I'm going to start over with a fresh playthrough so they still count as playing "from scratch".

Started but not Completed

  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Kirby's Epic Yarn
  • Sonic Generations
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Quantum Conundrum
  • Borderlands 2

Additional Playthroughs

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii U (currently finishing up the Star Coins with Shop)
  • The Binding of Isaac (mostly Cathedral and Chest runs left to do)
  • Diablo III (was considering a female wizard playthrough)
  • Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy (on harder difficulties)

If I recall correctly, you got stuck on "Love Rap". You're just a few events from the end, actually, with a good bit of post-game content. If you're curious, the secret to "Love Rap" is:

Spoiler:

Just try to hit the A button as soon as the MC's lines end. That was the only event where I had to abandon all notions of following along to a song or rhythm and just went with pure reaction time.

ClockworkHouse wrote:

I thought you started that and abandoned it as you just weren't jiving?

Anyway, I won't add it to my official list as creating a list of games I will buy didn't help prevent me from grabbing the odd one here and there, but for 2013 I'm looking at:

Day One:
- Aliens: Colonial Marines
- Bioshock Infinite
- The Last of Us
- Beyond: Two Souls
- Deadpool
- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
- South Park: The Stick of Truth
- Watch Dogs

Maybe Later/Cheaper:
- Dead Space 3
- Metal Gear Rising
- Tomb Raider
- Gears of War: Judgment
- The Devil's Third
- Lost Planet 3
- Metro: Last Light

Naturally, E3 could come along and screw all this up. We'll have to see.

Thanks! I was stuck on Love Rap for a long time but then did pass it and got stuck on I think the Remix of whatever column had Love Rap in it.

Regardless of how close I am to the end of a game, I have an order I use to play them in so I'm not going to just go back and finish it up on a whim. I'm literally only two levels away from ending Kirby's Epic Yarn too, and I think I only have the final boss left in Sonic Generations.

I did, but on second thought I might not have been approaching the game properly. I've had good luck recently by returning with a different mindset to games I'd written off previously (Super Paper Mario, Epic Mickey), so I want to give Xenoblade a second chance.

+1. Making a list of future purchases hasn't really helped in the past for me either. What I'm doing instead is asking myself 2 questions for each purchase: Am I excited to play this? and Do I want to play this right now? Realizing / reminding myself that I have a bunch of games that I'm excited to play makes it easier to put off purchases.

I've updated my backloggery page note with how I plan to track the pile this year. Here is that text:

Page Note wrote:

I'm using Backloggery just for Pile management, so the games listed are only those that were on IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) Unfinished at the start of the year, or were acquired during the year. Collections are broken down to be as granular as is sensible. Games beaten in previous years will be deleted so that the Pie chart stat shows progress YTD, rather than overall collection.

IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) Null is used for games that I've dropped. That way if I change my mind, they don't count as IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) New games.

For most games, IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) Beaten means I have finished the campaign and seen credits roll. Some games are not "beatable" (or I don't care about that aspect of the game) and they will have their Off The Pile goal listed in the Progress field.

I am not distinguishing between IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) Beaten and IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/completed.gif) Completed.

And here is my Pile, as it stands now.

Non-finishable Games
Games without campaign modes, or where beating the campaign isn't the point. Will be marked finished when I put in a nuch of play time (probably at least 10 hours), after which they may be added to favorites, but are no longer "Pile Games".

Nice use of the Backloggery icons, Garden_Ninja. I've stolen that idea for my own list.

I decided last night that my Backloggery should reflect what I think of as my collection and my record of what I've played, and for better or worse, that doesn't include PC games. I've got long, navel-gazing reasons why, but the end result is that I've pulled them all off of Backloggery even though I'll continue to play and enjoy them.

I'm also going to divide my pile into two lists: games I own that I'm sure I want to finish, and games I own that I haven't started yet or am otherwise uncertain about whether I'd like to finish them. Basically, it's a step between buying something and putting it on the pile proper. These are marked as Unplayed on Backloggery.

Games I own that I would like to finish:

  • Donkey Kong Country Returns IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • Epic Mickey IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)
  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)

Games I own that I haven't started yet:

  • [color=gray]Art Style: Rotozoa[/color] IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • [color=gray]Fortune Street[/color] IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • [color=gray]GoldenEye 007[/color] IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • [color=gray]Monster Hunter Tri[/color] IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • [color=gray]Muramasa: The Demon Blade[/color] IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)
  • [color=gray]Xenoblade Chronicles[/color] IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

2013 Progress:

  • 11 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) [color=gray](6 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))[/color]
  • 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)
  • 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/completed.gif)
  • 0 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/bulletremoved.gif)

I like the use of icons, but that's too much work for me. I need to be spending time clearing out the backlog, not formatting markup.

Buckled down and put together my tentative 2013 schedule. Less ambitious than my 2012 schedule full of failures... but also doesn't include some 2013 releases I'll probably want to try to squeeze in.

January 2013: Assassin’s Creed 3; Hitman: Absolution
February 2013: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (out January 22)
March 2013: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (two-month game!)
April 2013: Dead Space 3 (out February 5)
May 2013: Tomb Raider (out March 5)
June: Bioshock Infinite (out March 26)
July: Resident Evil 6
August: Gears Of War: Judgement (out March 19)
September: breather month!
October: Max Payne 3
November: Sleeping Dogs
December: Infamous 2

Likely pile additions based on reviews and release dates: Beyond: Two Souls (Q4?); GTA V (Q2); The Last Of Us (May 7); Splinter Cell: Blacklist (Q2)

Unscheduled Backloggery shortlist: Alan Wake DLC; Child of Eden; Dishonored; Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins Of The Moon (if I get a WiiU); The Last Story (if I get a WiiU); Limbo; Muramasa; Nier; Odin Sphere; Prince Of Persia: Sands of Time; Prince Of Persia; Yar’s Revenge

Nice use of the Backloggery icons, Garden_Ninja. I've stolen that idea for my own list. :)

Thanks. I plan on using the IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) New icon for games I acquire this year, in addition to the Unplayed / Unfinished / Beaten to mark playthrough status.

I like the use of icons, but that's too much work for me. I need to be spending time clearing out the backlog, not formatting markup.

I just keep a document with the backloggery BB code, and run Find/Replace before posting. It's only slightly time consuming the first time; shouldn't be hard for updates, though I will probably just do deltas again.

Here's the BB code and corresponding icon, btw
