Yankees win!

They certainly tried to make it interesting by almost blowing an 8 run lead, but they won game one of the ALCS 10-7. Yipee!!!

Yay! Yankees checkbook-fu is greater than Red Sox checkbook-fu!

The lack of a salary cap makes major league baseball a farce.

Agreed. I''d like to see one in place, would be interesting.

yep...can''t watch the sport anymore... half the playoff spots every year go to the same teams... simply based on payroll...

The payroll argument doesn''t hold any water. Look at the last year''s World Series champs...

Then again, judging by my avatar you cna tell I''m biased...

Although Swampy, unless you want to change your tune we may require you choose a new user name

I dunno...Marlins won last year...

Yep, the Marlins did. Who did they play? Who was in the series and the AL+NLCS before that? Before that? See any trends?

Same teams in the show. Year out, year in. Occasionally there are a few small market teams that get in, these cinderella teams make it fun for a short time, and the next year or two the stars are all gone, off to make big bucks with big market teams.

That is why the NFL has surpassed MLB in popularity. Parity, plain and simple.

It''s not that it''s impossible for a small-market, small payroll team to advance far or even win it all, it''s just that it''s much more unlikely. There is no encouragement of parity in MLB. You guys can''t believe there is no correlation between being the highest payroll team in baseball and in the last eight World Series they have been in 6 and won 4?

EDIT: Damn you Swampy!

Your anger feeds my soul!

I am a yankee fan, have been since birth, otherwise I would have been put up for adoption by my father how lives and breathes pinstripes. I suffered through a lot of years w/ not so household names like Jesse Barfield and Claudell Washington roaming the outfield. Times were not good during that long stetch through most of the mid to late 80s and even the early 90s. So I am happy as a fan can get that I can see them play so well now.

That being said, I still would love to see a salary cap. I dont mind top notch players making $20mill a year, most top notch movie stars pull in that much per film and some can make 2 or 3 films a year. But I do believe in overall balance on a team lvl and there definitely is not that balance in MLB. Look at the standings. How many teams were double digit wins out of first place by the end of regular season? Its quite disgusting how imbalanced it is.

Dont get me wrong...Baseball stinks...and its in desperate need of an overhaul...

but everytime a team like the Marlins wins a World Series any serious discussions in Baseball management go to the wayside...

I told you guys all last year at this time that we needed the Yankees to win the WS 10 times in a row for someone to finally look up and say...hey! this is broke..

but no....lots of people were happy the Marlins won...

It''s ok GG, the Yanks will not win it this year.

YEAH!...

<slinks back to his hole...Fing Mariano Rivera...you should be with your family you selfish bastard>

Ahh its only game one. Didn''t the Yankees lose game one of their last series? I''m not a baseball fan by any means but its not hard to tell that the Yankees are evil, much like the Lakers. When I was watching the game last nite they Red Sox players all looked like regular guys instead of superhuman overpaid Yankee players so that counts for something in my book. Also the Red Sox haven''t one a World Series since 1918 and the Yanks have won like 100 so theres another good reason to root for the Sox.

bah...Red Sox almost equaled the Yankees payroll...

They are both evil teams...

one is just cursed.

Yep, and this from a guy who would be a sox fan if he liked MLB. Big market teams suck.

Watch, next spring we''ll start an ESPN MLB league, and whoever gets the Yankmes will have an unholy advantage over everyone else, and unless they really blow will win out.

I get most of my Joy in baseball watching smaller market teams beat the big boys. That might be why I am a bigger fan of the A''s and Twins than most teams. I think small market teams can win, they just have to be smart. The problem is that most small market teams are dumb.

Anyway, back on topic, Without Rivera, the Yanks would have been toast. Good first game, and a good introduction to what is going to be one heck of a series!

As much as I absolutely HATE the Yankees, I get some kind of sick pleasure from watching Boston lose. Espcially to the yanks. So, way to go Yankees. I just wish there was a way that both teams could lose this series.

There is a way: Whoever gets through this series loses to the Astros/Cardinals. It is fun to watch Steinbrenner melt down and spend another 30 or 40 million to stack his team. It is also fun to watch Sox fans cry about their silly curse. It IS win-win.

Almost...we may be #2 but we''re still over 50 million bucks cheaper than the yankees. And only Manny Ramirez''s salary more than the Angels.

And there is no curse. The ""Curse"" was thought up as a way to sell a book by one of our oh-so-smaht sportswriters here.

Although a disturbing number of sox fans seem to revel in it.

But that book was pretty good. Pesky''s quote made me fall out of my chair laughing. Something along the lines of ""To this day people look at me like I''m a piece of shit"".

I dunno...it just irks me everytime I hear people look down on the Yankees and hold the Sox to some higher level.. so I still say bah!

And I believe in the curse... last year made me a believer.

Well, I don''t look down on the Yankee''s because of thier payroll. (ok, yes I do)

I look down on them because they''re a bunch of smarmy, arrogant conformists.

Down 0-2, I still don''t need no stinking curses.

Good god, Schilling needs ankle surgery.

wel, if the Red Sox picked up Alex Rodriguez, their payroll would have been around $145-150 million. still not $170 million (minus Rodriguez salary as per NY,) but still ridiculously high as well.

salaries aside they''re still an 8-5 favorite to beat NY.

Yes folks, 2-0 lead makes it that much easier for the Sox Nation to say ""wait till next year!"". I love hearing that. Their payroll is close to the Yankees but just can''t get over the hump...

Wait I thought the Red Sox had the pitching....

And I thought the Yankee''s had class.

Pero gave up 3 runs. By definition that is a quality start. 3 runs with the ""most prolific offense of 2004"" should be enough to win. I thought Pedro was very, very good. What''s more startling is what the F is going on with the Sox offense? Lead the league in production the past 2 years and have been pretty awful to date. I''m pretty sure I could do as well as Damon did the last 2 games. 0-8 with 5 k''s. He''s so much better than that.

True, that has been our mantra for a while now. As bad as the sox offense has been, we still had a chance to tie it in the 9th during both games. Both times getting hits off Rivera. As good as he is, 3 years ago getting to him was unthinkable, now it''s not so out of the question.

At least 2 games at Fenway, and hopefully 3. Lets see how the local 9 does back home in the confines of Friendly Fenway.

I still think the series goes 7 games... it wouldnt suprise me in the least for this series to be 2-2 going back to NY.

That being said... I think something else is going to happen...after Schillings ankle the curse seems to be in full effect.

Cards over Yanks in 6 in the big dance. Just wanted to get my prediction in now.
