NCAA Football 2012 Season Catch-All

Yeah someone was talking about that this week. Roy Williams apparently agreed before Doherty was hire, but then when he went to talk to his team at Kansas, he couldn't leave them.

Then a few years later after Doherty failed, that's when Roy finally went.

When the Aggies hired Franchione 9 years ago, we were ecstatic because he was red hot. Fantastic at TCU, then hired to Bama, and we stole him away from them.

Then he dismantled our program.

When we hired Sherman 5 years ago, we scratched our heads, because he was an NFL coach, without a ton of college experience.

Then he healed our program, but didn't quite get the results in the field where we wanted them.

When we hired Sumlin a year ago, we were split. Half the people loved hiring a young, "cool" coach with some Aggie coaching experience, and half the people hated hiring "a Conference USA coach!" who would presumably hire a Conference USA staff, including a much too young OC in Kliff Kingsbury who'd never even been a full OC before.

Then we went 10-2, beat Bama, Heisman front runner, SEC coach of the year, national OC of the year, today received a commitment from the top defensive prospect in Texas, etc etc.

The moral is: Every hire is a roll of the dice. The slam dunks can fail miserably, the obviously wrong decisions (in the eyes of many) can take you to the promised land.

Good luck to all!

Johnny Manziel is the first freshman to win the Davy O'Brien award for best college QB! Whoop!

Aaaaand Luke Joekel wins the Outland Trophy for best lineman! Go Ags!

Huh. Te'o won the Maxwell Award for the nation's most outstanding player and the Walter Camp national player of the year award tonight.

So does that mean he gets the Heisman too? Or are they giving him these and giving Johnny Football the Heisman?

Very interesting to see what happens Sat.

From what I've read, the Maxwell winner has only gone on to win the Heisman twice since 2000.

Could big some huge news going down in Knoxville tomorrow. If not tomorrow Tuesday at the latest, and no it has nothing to do with Butch Jones. Also I don't get news from blogs or ESPN or whatever other media BS is out there. My news comes from people who I trust and are right 9 times out of 10 when it comes to Knoxville and UT things. There is a lot of crazy sh*t going down behind the scenes right now and if half of it's true they could write a book after all this is over.

Tenner fans will be down on Butch Jones, but I think he's a great hire who will do great things at Tennessee. Look at what Brain Kelly has done at Notre Dame. I anxiously await the Arkansas/Tennessee SEC Championship!

Ok, I've had time to step back from the ledge. I still bleed orange and will support Jones until he proves me otherwise. GBO.

Poor Gumbie, you remind me off the Arkansas fans calling Bielema Houston Nutt 2.0. He's not (he's the most qualified coached we've EVER HIRED), and Butch Jones isn't Dooley. Kelly's playing the the NC game this year. Back of the ledge SEC friend. SEC is cherry picking the best coaches from the other conferences.

I've rewatched the B1G Championship twice so far and I LOVE the gameplan. Wisconsin dismantled Nebraska in every phase of the game. The future at Arkansas is so bright I'm wearing welding goggles.

He's gonna get broken in right next year. Oregon is the third game on the schedule in Eugene, followed by Florida in Gainesville and then Alabama several weeks later in Tuscaloosa . Oh wait.... Oregon? I thought SEC never played big opponents outside of the SEC.

Hope you guys destroy them like LSU did!

Arkansas has UL-L Ragin Caujuns, Samford (I know FCS),Southern Miss (they were good when we scheduled them), Rutgers in Piscataway, and TAMU at Home to open up the season. I'm thinking a 7-5 season is very possible. Switch to D-first is going to be a change. No reason Coach Bielema can't meat the challenge.

He took a pay cut (from what was offered) to pay assistants. Let's hire the best staff money can buy (why he left Whisky).

Judging from your posts today, I'm guessing this is the 1 time out of 10, eh?

Wait and see, wait and see. Jones has had his current team winning in strong fashion lately.

Settle down. That's an outlier. Georgia was supposed to have a home and home with Oregon and they backed out. Tennessee stepped in. Good for them. Here's all SEC member schedules. There are some other AQ teams in there, but not many good ones.

Some highlights.

- Before playing Oregon Tennessee plays Austin Peay and Western Kentucky.

- Miss St. has 8 home games and 4 road games

- LSU plays Furman and Kent State

- Ole Miss plays Southeast Missouri and Idaho

As long as you don't like winning bowl games, you'll be fine

Except that's why Gumbie was so upset. Tenn got turned down by Mike Gundy, Larry Fedora, and Charlie Strong this week. Not cherry picking by any stretch.

If we can win the SEC that's all I need! Good luck hiring Petersen!

Cinci lost by three in OT, I'd call it a push. I love Stong, he's a great coach in the Big East or ACC or whatever conference Louisville is in now. Butch had the balls to step up, I'll respect him for that.

I'm not saying he's a bad hire. Cherry picking is not the description for taking your 4th choice (or 5th, forgot Gruden) in a coaching search.

Well I still trust my source they had a very good reason to tell me what they were telling me even if it turned out wrong. No one but the AD and a few others probably know what really went down at the end.

The only person who the media has any clue if they even got offered is Strong. Otherwise it's a stretch to say the other two "turned them down". Just because a coach calls a meeting and says "I'm staying here" doesn't mean they were even offered anything.

After looking at it a little more I'm not so down. Sure he may not be the cream of the crop but the guy definitely wanted the job and I think he'll bleed orange. Also he brings a true spread offense which seems to be working out quite well for Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies. Rumors already starting that Jones will reel in the top dual threat prospect QB Asiantii Woulard.

After Butch Jones turned down Colorado, most outlets (regardless if you believe them or not) were presuming he would be next in line for Tennessee.. Out of curiosity who would you have preferred out of who was left? Strong and Gundy were off the list. Everyone wants Peterson, but honestly, it wasn't in the cards for any school. The other names that I suppose are still publicly out there are Diaco from ND, and the west coast ones I hear of but I doubt any of them interest or are interested in the SEC since they wouldn't be familiar with the recruiting out there. Kirby Smart or Dan Mullen would be the only other two I could think of.

Also, I'll put out my "semi"-bold prediction.. Chip Kelly to the NFL, Peterson takes the Oregon job.

I feel better after reading this article

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...

I think TN needs a guy like this right now. With everything that's been going on the past 5 years the program is in shambles and needs someone who can pull people back together.

Edited for dumb overreaction. Welcome to Tennessee Coach Jones!

Gumbie, three years ago a lot of folks were upset when Notre Dame couldn't lure Bob Stoops away from Oklahoma and had to "settle" for Brian Kelly. The word from the most bitter folks was that Kelly was in over his head schematically and on the recruiting front, and that the coaching staff that he put together – largely from folks he worked with at Cincinnati or at other stops in his career – wasn't top rate.

I think history has shown that all of those concerns were wrong. His recruiting classes have been top rate, and his coaches have not only been great at teaching the players on the field, but also at recruiting. Bob Diaco even won the assistant coach of the year award.

Personally, Kelly was my favorite target from the get-go (I actively hoped against landing Stoops, even). It may take a year or two to really become comfortable with what it takes to be a coach at the next level, but the fundamentals are all still there. I bet Butch Davis will be just fine for Tennessee.

Watching Butch Jones conference looks like we're going to no huddle spread offense and back to 4-3 defense. whoo!

Gumbie – Just getting to read that article. Wow, have Cincy people never heard of the phrase "mixed metaphors"?

We don't want to let up on that accelerator, but Butch is coming in at a different time. We're not going from A to Z now. We're on third base.

Petersen has stayed put so long I have a hard time seeing him leaving for a team with as much NCAA scrutiny as Oregon.

Man, now DSG is knocking teams for scheduling Kent State and Idaho, who are FBS teams? Dude, I thought you wanted more inter-conference play between FBS teams so we'd know who is really better?

Thank goodness your own Oregon State Beavers would never schedule an FCS team...

...other than Nicholls State, who you played six days ago! Well, I'm sure y'all took it easy on them, in the spirit of not acting like a hulking FBS, AQ conference powerhouse...

77-3, huh?

Love you, bro! In all seriousness, beat the HELL outta t.u. in the Alamo Bowl!

Can't see it on my iPhone.
