2012, end of the world, or end of your pile? - the 12 month thread

That's a thumbs up from me too! Give us your damage, you may just be the cover girl for these threads, going forward!

An unexpected side effect of not being able to buy new games, and spending less time gaming in general, is that I've changed the way that I play. I noticed it first with my 3DS because that's the system where I've had the smallest backlog. When I ran out of new games to play or got tired of the games I had, I couldn't go buy new games that had caught my eye. Instead I replayed games to get all the collectibles or gave second chances to games I'd burned out on and abandoned.

It reminds me of the way I played games as a kid. I'd like to keep that kind of fun and focus going into 2013, and I still might make a few edits to my pile to help make that happen.

And

ccesarano wrote:

I do want to be productive with the pile, but I want to enjoy my games. And so I am.

I'm trying to take that tack as well. I've noticed that, despite wanting to revisit games, I don't allow myself to because I feel like I should be working on Pile games. I mentioned concern earlier about marking Terraria as beaten, precisely because of that tendency. I am going to mark it as beaten and try to change that habit. That's actually part of why I decided to join the B-Team in the TrueAchievements thread: achievement chasing is a good excuse to replay games.

I don't want to worry too much about adding to the pile, but I want to limit additions to games I want to play right away.

I also am going to put a release date limit of sorts on new acquisitions. Basically, for each game, I need to determine whether I will still enjoy the game after the conversation has moved on. The older a game is, the better it needs to be. Anything older than 5 years better be phenomenal. This does mean I will miss a lot of games, even classics, and I will probably miss a bunch of good series, unless it is easy to jump into the latest installment. I'm okay with that. I can't experience everything, so what I do should be really good.

Just remember you probably don't have time to play all the great games that come out, you probably don't even have time to play all the amazingly great games that come out, so even if you were to stop playing or buying new games to play owe old classics, then you are just switching which classics you are missing

I'm definitely going to have to cut back on the amount of gaming I'm doing because I do want to other things than game next year!

But I don't really mind if my pile grows and grows since my pile is mostly made up of stuff I haven't actually bought, but I'm just "planning to buy". So it isn't really hurting anything. As long as it doesn't grow to the length where Google Docs can't handle it any more.

Don't forget kiddies:

Navel gazing time!

According to Backloggery I added 55 games this year, beat 20, and completed 7, for a net loss of 28. This is by far one of my best attempts at curbing pile growth, much credit is due to this thread. Much credit is due to the Steam Summer sale for sabotaging my progress as 25% of the new items were gifts during that period.

Looking at my pile Google Doc, I notice I was much more successful in beating new games than I was with clearing older older games, at 44% vs. 34% of each list beaten or completed. While I find part of the fun of clearing the pile is visiting older games sitting in my collection, it's clear I'm drawn to the shiny new games. In addition, I managed to beat several games (old and new) which weren't originally planned from the start of the year, which tells me that I need to allow room for my impulses to take the lead instead of adhering only to "the list".

For older games, I acquired 5 of the 12 I expected to buy, beat two of them, and picked up an additional two games. I think this is an area where I need to do a lot more work and is something where my "collector" tendencies tend to outweigh the reality that I probably don't have a lot of time to be picking up yesterday's hits. Going forward, I'm going to mostly use this to track console/portable games I should buy before they become harder to find. Anything on PC should be relegated to the Backloggery wishlist for "when I'm ready".

I completely failed at all my other goals this year. I've significantly cut back on Kingdom of Loathing which has allowed me more time to partake in other activities, and I was decimated by the Steam sale despite not buying any games for myself. Plus, Binding of Isaac was not played as often as I expected so I failed on that goal as well. On the bright side, I did manage to avoid several of the Humble Bundles due to either lack of interest in the games or the fact I owned a significant portion of the bundle already. I seriously support their cause, but much like Steam sales, I feel the novelty is wearing off. (I seriously hope next year I'll be saying the same about Kickstarter).

So... I consider this year a success, sorta. This thread got me to pay a lot more attention to my buying and playing habits than I ever have and I think I'm better off for it. Finding out that I lose interest in most games if I mainline them for 20 hours straight was a huge breakthrough for myself (and others), and I think I'm slowing accepting the mantra of buying games when I'm ready for them.

On to next year

Well, I was looking at beating Pokemon White, but I'm at an awkward point where I technically need to grind but there's no good spot to do so. Enemies either yield too little experience or not enough for the damage they deal. So either I'm going to tough it out and just push ahead to the Elite Four and the game's end, or I'm going to give up for now and possibly replay Kid Icarus or Resident Evil: Revelations.

Even though it is early I have been thinking back to the games of this year and want to go back and replay some of my favorites from earlier in the year so I can have it all fresh in my mind when the new GOTY threads start.

I made decent progress for the first 8 months, but then the MMOs killed my "pileaging". Guild Wars 2 and MoPandaria ate a lot of my time. Time in which I could have played both Dragon Age Origins GOTY and Fallout 3 GOTY to 100%. I could never related to the causes of addiction or why it can be so hard to kick a habit. After the last 3 months, I can. I may get made fun of for this, but it's like breaking up after a long relationship.

I do hope I can finish another game or two before New Years. My biggest lowlight is that I didn't manage to tackle and down even one of the big ones this year in order to make room for Skyrim, FO:NV or Farcry 3. I'll definitely need to either stop buying 50h+ games or get over my anxiety to commit to a singleplayer game for that long.

As stated, I'm replaying Mega Man X and recording the footage so that I can slap a video together, but it has been an amazing experience replaying this game in ways drastically different than before. Enemies have moves I never even knew about. There are changes made to levels based on defeating previous levels I wasn't aware of. I've played this game dozens of times over and I'm only just now learning about some of these things.

If there's a game with any non-linear options in this same vein, go back and replay them doing something totally different. Screw the pile. Have some fun.

Spoiler:

Don't worry, monkeyboy, no one knows about the Kingdom Hearts games you just bought.

I need to be better at tossing out games I'm not into. I'm still slogging through Epic Mickey on DS even though it's awful and getting worse, but I feel like it would be wrong to not finish such a short, simple game.

But it's more wrong to waste my time, right?

Please explain yourself. I have to know. I've beaten the game in most ways I could imagine, but am not sure what you are talking about. It's been so long since I played.

Well, there are obvious ones like beating Chill Penguin before Flame Mammoth means Mammoth's level is frozen over, making it easier to navigate. Or Storm Eagle's plane crashing into Spark Mandrill's level and the electric current in the floor no longer flows. But I normally do Sting Chameleon last, and found that the area you get the heart tank in his level is not filled with water if you haven't defeated Launch Octopus.

I'll be sure to share my video with you when I'm done, as I'll be getting into all of this stuff.

ccesarano wrote:

I remember finding this when I was trying to do a run where I prioritized getting all the armor upgrades early. Mandrill and Mammoth stages are significantly harder in their standard configurations.

I don't recall Capcom really exploring this much more with later games in the series

Oh, man, I can remember the level changes, but only as a reference and not what it really looked like. All I can rightly remember is I typically started out with penguin then eagle and 3/4 were usually mammoth and chameleon in some order. I always went after Kuwanger last. Does anyone have any idea what sort of animal he is supposed to be? I think I tried looking it up as a kid and got nothing. I was pretty adept at getting through the game using mostly the buster only. All I know is from time I cluelessly made my first level select pick, I always went to penguin first so I could get the dash boots, and once I found the helmet, went to the eagle 2nd.

Mega Man 2 and X were the best the blue bomber ever had to offer in my book.

Wikia says Stag Beetle, name is derived from the Japanese word for the insect.

I added so much this year. I blame Steam. And the lack of willpower.

2013 will be different, damn it!

Partaking in this thread, I learned this year I was asking the wrong questions. Rather than "which games should I play" it should have been "just how many games can I play"? This year I finished nine. When you play games like me (I commonly sink 100+ hours into RPGs and rarely play anything less than 40) that's probably par for the course.

So, I was making a list/schedule where I tried to play a game or two a month in 2012. I realize now that is ambitious. Pile control means hard-nosed realism about acquisition.

Prepping for 2013 with a schedule that includes upcoming releases, realizing that Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Bioshock Infinite, and Dead Space 3 means half the year is already spoken for. That means I'm going to be very conservative about buying anything else, and very liberal about selling off more of the unplayed games in my cabinet that I "really want to get around to." I recommend this exercise: LOOK AT NEXT YEAR'S RELEASE SCHEDULE and plan accordingly.

That's precisely why I started tracking release dates in my document earlier this year. It makes it really easy to prioritize the games you want to play immediately and which ones are best saved for a rain day Steam sale

I had a mixed year.

At the start, it was going great. Burning through the pile. Then life took a turn for the worse, and gaming sank to the bottom of a very long list.

Overall, I'm marking 2012 as a small win in terms of pile progression. I know I finished more than I bought, and I even knocked off a few titles I had gathering dust on the shelf.

Looking forward to a 'fresh' 2013 next year (as long as we don't all die in a Mayan Apocalypse in the next week or so).

beeporama wrote:

I did this exercise!

I looked at my handheld gaming this year: my 3DS and my brief but passionate ownership of a PSP. This was my first year owning a handheld system of any kind, but assuming that my level of interest remains the same, then I can expect to spend about 250 hours in the year on handheld gaming, maybe a little more, maybe a little less. Looking at 2013's 3DS release schedule so far and the games I missed from 2012 that I'd like to play, my dance card is already mostly full:

  • Resident Evil: Revelations
  • Tales of the Abyss
  • Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star
  • Unchained Blades (hopefully)
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Etrian Odyssey IV

Plus a tentative interest in Monster Hunter 3G. That's not even taking into consideration potential localizations for Bravely Default or Rune Factory 4, the various eShop games that have caught my eye, or anything announced at E3 or later in the year. I'm sure Nintendo will have at least one big announcement for next Christmas.

That's also not taking into account that I still have two huge games, Dragon Quest IX and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, to finish.

What this does do, though, is make me aware of what I have time for and what I'm most looking forward to. I'm excited for the coming year in terms of handheld games I'll get to play, even if I already know that I'm going to have to make some hard choices about what gets picked up and what gets left behind.

Where's a good source for next year's release schedule?

Talking about releases 2013, what ever happened to X: Rebirth? X3: Albion Prelude came out a year ago and as far as I understood it, it was suppose to build hype for the 2012 release of X: Rebirth.

Demyx wrote:

I think last year some people were referencing Wikipedia. This should be the page for next year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_in...

EDIT: Definitely not complete, but the schedule up through March looks fairly solid. Thank goodness Febtober is dead this year. Going to need that for Ni No Kuni, and Simcity 5 is really close to dropping off my radar with the Bioshock Infinite delay.

Interesting list for next year. For me, like I think a lot of others, Ni No Kuni is a must buy. Hell, it's pretty much the sole reason I wanted a PS3 over a 360. Aside from that, I kicked in for Shadowrun Returns and am eagerly awaiting my first foray in to that universe. Anyone else kick in there? On the whole though, it looks like I'll continue whittling away at my current pile if all goes well.

Trine 2 is down. Almost wasn't expecting to finish anything else this year.

Also got Scribblenauts as a Chanukka gift from my girlfriend.

I, Luggage, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

In addition, I will only purchase games older than 3 months under the following condition: for every 2 pile games finished, 1 new pile game may be purchased.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

Year end tally. I figure nothing will change with the status below, so this is what I'll move over to the 2013 thread. 20 games beaten, another 5 abandoned. Not quite where I wanted to be, especially with FO3, DA:O, STALKER:SOC and SR3 still on the list. Adding up the times I tracked on Backloggery and estimates on D3, WoW:MoP, GW3 and ME3 multiplayer, I've logged at least 600h this year. Good times were had!

Edit: I definitely need to get better about impulse buying stuff that's not on my "color me interested" list, just because there's a sale.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (already purchased)
BioShock Infinite
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
South Park: The Stick of Truth (if it's actually good)
The Cave

That's not that many, really. Maybe I'll get a chance to catch up on my pile! Or maybe Nintendo will drop a huge load of new releases for the WiiU and Kingdom Hearts HD will get localized and there goes my year.

Where's a good source for next year's release schedule?

I think last year some people were referencing Wikipedia. This should be the page for next year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_in...

Huh, this is cool. I was keeping my own list just based on news about the handful of games I was super interested in.

Okay, just looking over 2013, here's the games I'm probably going to be adding to my current pile:

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (already purchased)
BioShock Infinite
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
South Park: The Stick of Truth (if it's actually good)
The Cave

That's not that many, really. Maybe I'll get a chance to catch up on my pile! Or maybe Nintendo will drop a huge load of new releases for the WiiU and Kingdom Hearts HD will get localized and there goes my year.

Bioshock Infinite already pre-ordered for myself, and Tomb Raider are the only two on my radar for next year. I'm hoping I can stick to it, especially looking at what I never got to this year (Batman AC, Lollipop Chainsaw, Kingdom of Amalur, Skyrim, FFXIII-2...) Better stop now, spoilers for the 2013 thread
