Creative Assembly get Warhammer license

Squee sauce

Alright folks, cool your jets, THQ still has 40k. Creative Assembly has the Warhammer Fantasy license and is already hard at work.

The Creative Assembly is going from legionaries to Lizardmen, having obtained the rights to develop Warhammer fantasy games. Sega announced today that it and subsidiary Creative Assembly have entered into a multi-title licensing deal with miniature makers Games Workshop, with a dev team already working to get the studio's first Warhammer game out for next year. Creative Assembly's license is only for the Warhammer fantasy line and not for the Warhammer 40K universe, as clarified to Eurogamer by both Sega and Warhammer 40K license holder THQ.

The last decade saw THQ pump out a swathe of Warhammer 40K games, but outside of two Namco-published real-time strategies and EA's Warhammer Online, it's been all quiet on the fantasy front. That's something Creative Assembly must hope to rectify, although it's not like the studio is desperate for pies to cram its fingers into. The British developer says it's working on Total War: Rome 2, the as yet unnamed Alien game, the first Warhammer game, and two other unannounced projects.

Warhammer: Total War?

Total Warhammer

Total awesome!

Hammer: Total War

Wow, that could be an awesome matchup. I'd love to see the cleverness behind Shogun turned to epically huge fantasy battles.

I'm not too up on Fantasy, but the idea of throwing a thousand Space Marines at ten thousand Orks sounds mighty appealing, so I imagine the fantasy version would be fairly cool, too.

For those that love WH see if you can find WH:Mark of Chaos.

Was a brilliant game for when it came out and loads of fun.

Loved my Skaven

War: Total Hammer?

Really though, excited for this. I like the Warhammer Fantasy setting but am so tired of their tabletop rules. As long as they have lots of the races playable, I'll be in.

for me fantasy means one thing:

Skaven!

I think Total Warhammer has to be the name. Nothing else works right.

I loved the first Dawn of War. I also played a ridiculous amount of Rome: Total War in college. Combining both of these into a massive battle of thousands of Space Marines and Orks is making me feel faint.

Bring it on.

Sweet.

Schhhhhhhhhwing.

Cautiously optimistic.

Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the Skull Throne!!

To be honest I think I am really more a follower of Tzeentch.

I came in expecting to get all upset over no more Relic based 40k games. Instead it's the fantasy end I don't care much for. Okey dokey.

On the other hand, I saw this suggested elsewhere: WAAAGH: Total War

Made me laugh.

It's Warhammer Fantasy, not 40k. 40k still is in Relic's capable hands.

That's fine. Rome: Total War didn't have a lot of projectiles. I'm fine with swords and magic.

Totally Ran out of Actual History. Also, cautiously thrilled.

There are a lot of people that love one franchise and dispise the other, so I just wanted to avoid any confusion.

Hmm, this could be interesting.

Honestly, this seems like a dream come true to me. CA has really stepped up their game with Shogun 2 and I'd love to see what they could do with warhammer fantasy. Unfortunately, the last Warhammer fantasy game a few years back was horrible.

Warmer: Total Ham?

Definitely looking forward to seeing where they go with this. I loved Shadow of the Horned Rat way back in the day.

It's a Thanksgiving miracle everyone can enjoy!

Not shocking, and could be awesome. Could be. Creative Assembly is still very capable of screwing it up mightily. But I'm watching closely.

EDIT: Wait. Brain just clicked and realized it's Warhammer Fantasy. Less interested now. I've always been more into 40k.

I like both, but I prefer fantasy. But you are right, I wish someone like Paradox Interactive had gotten this. Still, I have high hopes for this.

They kinda did.

I'm pretty excited about it and I'm a 40k fan. Also thanks for that link Garion will be checking that out. I'm a sucker for most things GW.
