Why isn't this on Steam sale? I was so ready to buy it this week. Don't make me wait until Christmas sale...

Something tells me you've got some other games that have been patiently waiting that you can destroy for a few weeks. There's actually a working-the-pile thread elsewhere in the forums.

Yeah after you buy this game you don't own it - it owns you ;).

I got it full price on Steam . There was a 10% off per-release but I missed it - 1$ won't stop me from getting a cool game.

At a mere $10 MSRP, being a cheapskate is not a valid excuse for not owning this game

A tiny bit. I actually lost all my save data (and unlocks) in a hard disk crash in October, which helped me detox from the game. But I occasionally play a run or two.

Didn't use Steam? It doesn't say so officially but it does have cloud support.

I am on Steam but for whatever reason did not have Cloud saves. (Do I have to enable that specifically? Is it perhaps not available on the Mac version?)

Strange... A while back I installed windows 7 onto a completely fresh hard drive and when I booted up Steam for the first time my savegame was waiting for me. There is a "prof.sav" file that goes in your My Documents folder, but I never transferred my old one over. No idea why it worked for me and not you.

It did not release with cloud support. That was added in a subsequent update.

WOHOOO! I unlocked my crystal ship!

I did it with the Rock Ship B too, that got me the third achievement.

EriktheRed -- That's quite an impressive ship! Per Steam, I've got 71 hours played, but I'm still trying to unlock the Mantis ship, much less the Crystal ship!

If anybody is lurking and waiting for a sale, FTL is now $5.99 over at GoG (or maybe better, right from the main web site where you can get a steam key too).

I am. It is dangerous because you think you are going to play for only 15 minutes and then 2 hours go by.

Ditto, and ditto. I haven't had a chance to sink a lot of time, so I haven't perfected my management skills and unlocked a bunch of stuff. Still fun, though.

Alright, jumped on the sale. Tired of waiting for a bigger one.

Just did the tutorial and one game so far.

I failed miserably, on Easy. Died in sector 2.

I guess at least I made it out of sector 1.

Once more into the breach...

Stele,

The key isn't "make it to the end", its "survive the end"

You'll get the hang of it, but you're much better off spending as much time (more jumps) through each sector trying to outfit your ship than trying to rush through to the next sector.

Well I saw there's an achievement for making sector 5. So a little disappointing when I only make it to sector 2 and I turned it down to easy.

Anyway, made it to sector 4 second game... blargh.

In sector 6 now in my 3rd game, and doing much better. So I guess I unlocked a ship for next game.

So far, lots up upgrading. Got a cloaking device and a fire while cloaked augmentation.

Had a nice crew of 6, but lost one in the most recent attack.

Oxygen was knocked out, I thought I had him repairing it, but apparently didn't finish fast enough... it was odd, I'm not entirely sure why he died. Being in a nebula makes it weird with ship sensors. I wasn't sure which rooms had oxygen and which didn't yet. Ah well. The rest of us will live on!

Damn this game is a lot of fun for something that seems so simple on the surface.

Gabba gabba one of us!

Argh... I lost to the boss on the second stage while using the Fed Cruiser. What I'm used to doing is taking my sweet time eliminating crew to weaken the ship and knocking out systems one by one. It doesn't work! The Cruiser gets a special beam weapon but it can't mount a cloaking device. This means that you can't avoid the "super attacks" the boss does every now and then. The only thing you can do is FIRE EVERYTHING and smash the boss flat without giving it a chance to fight back.

I didn't understand this and I failed my crew

Died in the very next section after posting earlier.

Started a game as the Engineer Cruiser and that is pretty cool. I never had the spare parts to buy droids so far, so that was new, but fun. Up to sector 4 again. Keep finding lots of new and different missions, and some cool bonus options on how to complete them. Like one mission where automated defenses were messed up now had extra options for me to disable them with my icon cannon or have one of my Engi characters remotely repair them.

Dynamic mission goals. Very cool, even if it's only text.

You can tell rooms which are too low on oxygen by their orange/yellow outlines. The outline goes away when there's enough oxygen. It also takes some time for oxygen to regenerate, so it's possible to repair that system too late and all your crew dies before the percentage gets high enough again that no one is taking damage.

Also, I think someone mentioned upthread that in this game "easy" = "pretty hard" and "normal" = "f*ck you". Don't be too hard on yourself

Yeah, I think I've played a total of one game on Normal mode. Easy is perfect.

Yeah, Easy doesn't pull any punches. It just gives you more resources to work with.

Well I got another achievement... Tough Little Ship... whew. But still can't get farther than sector 6.

Had my best crew experience. Got a guy on the first planet. Got a Mantid who is great at combat. So I had a nice crew of 5 in the first sector. Later in sector 4 I looked up one was gone. Think she was fixing oxygen again? I swear I hear the alert beeps when people are invading. I wonder if I forgot to close a door when I sent her back to repair the engines? I don't know. Somehow she was dead. And then it went downhill from there, lost another squad in each sector.

When it was down to 3 of us in sector 6, I got booby trapped by a crazy guy I tried to rescue and lost half of my hull. Before I could find a store I got gunned down.

So s6 seems to be my limit, 3 times in a row.

Finally to sector 8. And stayed up way too late.

Could not defeat the boss, but I really feel like I got screwed on random map placement. There was nowhere for me to go except to one of my repair sectors, and then from the to another repair sector. So those were totally wasted.

I guess I could have waited and waited and hoped the boss came to me. But that would be pretty lame. Ah well.

Better yet I got another achievement and got Kestrel B. So something slightly different awaits tomorrow.

Don't wait for the boss to come to you. If you wait too long you will automatically lose. I like the Kestrel B more than type A. I think it is a slightly easier ship to win with.

Eliminate the crew manning the guns at the front. That's crucial. If you can't cloak, be sure you have max shields and a lvl 2 defense drone sure helps.

Ah, the FTL Cry of Perpetual Lament.

Those gun rooms are also completely seperate from the mian body of the boss and from each other, so feel free to teleport guys over there willy nilly, even if you don't have a 2x Mantid elite boarding crew.

Hell yes. Played one game this afternoon and it's so much better. Sadly I still died somewhere in S5 or S6, due to a string of bad luck. Solar flare system knocked out my engines while fighting, then kept starting fires and fires... and then my next jump was to a meteor storm, so I couldn't heal... and next jump was to a ship that outmatched me, but I could not charge before I lost my hull.

Still, I thought it was going to be perfect. I had replaced two of my starter lasers with 2-dmg-per-shot lasers, had the fire while cloaked augment, but just hadn't been able to grab the cloak yet. Thought I was going to coast to the end as soon as I got that. Alas...

Guess I'll give it another shot!

Might have to look up how to unlock other ships. Just curious for a little more variety.

I own this now but I'm not sure what to make of it.
I started my first run and encountered a drone-defended storage base on my first hop. My options were 'ignore' 'provoke.' I provoked. A few oxygen leaks, fires, and a fatality later I was the proud owner of a module I had no idea of how to equip. So my two remaining crew manned their stations (after making extensive repairs) and made a second jump. There we met a well-equipped pirate that offered us an ultimatum: surrender a crew-member as a slave or die. The two crew members flipped a coin and manned the battle stations. The end.

Congrats! You got your cherry popped.

Damn, I have the Rock Ship B, I need to play moar and get some real ships under my Orions Belt...

Been playing some more, and been trying to play just plain better. This game can make me rage quit though. At one point I was doing real well with four weapons and the rail/laser gun that fires automatically maxed out. I also had a boarding party. My shielding was weak but damn was I strong. I took a side mission to take over a ship, which due to my stupidity I lost my mantis. I was just so mad I quit. That was the third mantis I lost to doing something stupid. My first boarding crew was on board when the ship went boom.

It just feels so tough to manage things sometimes. Especially now that I'm not using the auto fire. Still in the heat of a battle I just lose track of something and boom bad mistake end of game.

The ship is the osprey, in general I feel like the auto beam weapon isn't worth it until maybe the boss fight. The load time on it is so slow, that it tends to coincide with when you have crew on board and are about to win. Eventually I decided it wasn't worth the damage to keep losing boarding parties accidentally.
