Planetside 2 Catch-All

I think the problem is that the tech plants have become invaluable and therefore that's where all the combat is. They unintentionally funneled a majority of the combat to three bases.

Combine that with the fact that there's basically only two doors to get in make it a veritable meat grinder.

There is a fix for that.

This is the only time I have seen that work Every time we try it or someone tries it on us, it fails. Most of the time there are way to o many people in there and even if you do kill them, more will come and fast.

Not true, you can also take the gravity lift down from the roof. And light assaults can jump into the gap over each of the forcefields in the centre. They just need to do so as a group so they don't get gunned down. Even if you only have a couple of guys doing this it draws a lot of defenders away from the doors.

Yep. The problem isn't that there are too few ways to assault the base, but that you need a coordinated assault to successfully break in. Where as you only need an uncoordinated defense to hold the base against most attacks. This is not a bad thing, IMNSHO.

So I gave this a fair shake yesterday and I gotta say the lack of feedback is very disorienting. Tried to play Infiltrator/sniper and was attempting to shoot some guys from far out, but I had no feedback on whether or not I was hitting them and if I was missing where my shots were going. If they're running it seems like one needs to lead the shot a bit but again I can't if I'm hitting or not.

If you have your scope set off toggle you can keep it up as long as you hold the right mouse button down. It will allow you to see where your shots are going. If you just snap a shot off you wont be able to see where you're firing.

It's a good idea to find a piece of terrain near your target ( like a tree) and use that to zero in the range needed to hit them. If you just shoot at them repeatedly they will notice the *SSSSSSSTHCRACK* sound of the bullets going past and take cover.

I'm a little late to the party with Planetside 2, is the official GWJ outfit the Quantum Dawn peeps? I saw last night that there were about seven or so people on the GWJ Planetside vent. GD says it uses TeamSpeak only, so what outfit are the Vent guys?

Anyone playing TR on Waterson? Our group is pretty small and we are having a problem getting decent full squads. the add-ons are always silent with the odd exception.

I might be skim-scamming everyone, but have you guys seen this from Gamespy and Massively?

"SOE Reveals PlanetSide 2's Massive Bastion Fleet Carrier

You can pack a sizable squad inside a Galaxy transport in PlanetSide 2. But what about all their vehicles? Enter the gargantuan, Star Wars Star Destroyer-like Bastion Fleet Carrier. It looks like Sony Online Entertainment's already massive shooter is going to get ridiculously huge courtesy of the biggest PlanetSide ship ever.
SOE President John Smedley tweeted that "people keep asking for Galaxies to carry tanks." His response? A mock up of a Bastion Fleet Carrier that will likely get PlanetSide 2 fans drooling:
Part Star Destroyer, part SHIELD's Helicarrier, all AWESOME. I'm already envisioning the crazy sky battles that will take place courtesy of Fleet Carriers. Taking one of these suckers down in an epic fiery crash is now on my 2013 priority list.
No word yet on when -- if ever -- we'll actually see Bastion Fleet Carriers in PlanetSide 2. We'll keep you posted."

QD is not our "official" outfit, we don't actually have one. But most people have been migrating in that direction.

There are a bunch of us who play together on vent every now and then. Forming a squad of 3-5 people.

My suggestion is to play in vent with the people that are there. Once you get the hang of the way the game works you can then apply to Dawn if you are still interested. Dawn tries to help new players as much as possible but there are some night and times where your squad will be asked to perform certain tasks and it's better if you know how to do those tasks.

If you can get to the roof (the tech plants have an obscene amount of AAA) the gravity lifts will bring you down into the exact same grenade spam zone that walking through the doors does. You can deploy a squad beacon and get another shot at the roof but essentially you're riding to the same spot you're trying to avoid.

I love the concept of shield busters but every faction holding a base now knows you just need to parks Sundy's or MBT's next to the shield thereby rendering the shield busters useless.

I have a completely unrelated question re: QD's Teamspeak server. I logged on yesterday afternoon and there were about 20 guys in one channel apparently trying to out talk each other. I don't remember who was "leading" the squad but whoever it was apparently just discovered the word "f*ck". He went on a 5 minute tirade about SOE screwing up patches that would've made Richard Pryor recoil. I'm not a princess by any standards but the amount of profanity I heard in 15 minutes was enough to make me log off. Is it always like that?

I was not there for that, but that is the first time I've heard anything of the like. In fact, I can't even think to another time I've heard someone drop the f-bomb in the channel. Do you know whom it was that was doing that? I'll say something to Shin about it, as I'm sure he wouldn't be too thrilled with that either.

No not at all. In fact, I dont recall ever hearing that kind of stuff. You dont remember who it was?

I don't remember who it was, he sounded older and seemed to be running the group. I dontt want to make a big deal about it, as I said, I'm not usually sensitive to that kind of thing. This was just so over the top it seemed excessive.

I should point out, on was on late last night and didn't hear anything like that. Maybe it's the happy hour club!

For the people just starting who are having a difficult time I encourage you to stay the course.

The concept of the game is simple (FPS) but there is actually a pretty steep learning curve and there isn't a lot of games out there that are going to prepare you for this game.

At first it seems similar to BF3 but honestly the more I play it the more I realize that BF3 and PS2 are very different beasts. The biggest difference is the sheer scale of PS2. There are targets everywhere and you really have to relearn how to move around and position yourself in this game. There are just people everywhere and things going on all around you and bullets flying from all directions in a way that no other game can replicate. Even the most hectic BF3 match is nothing compared to the sheer assault on your senses that a PS2 battle can cause.

When you start be prepared to die. A lot.

I pretty much had 100 deaths in this game before I had a kill. That's kind of embarassing to admit but it is true. I died over and over and over and over again and half the time I didn't even understand why I died or wtf was going on at the time.

Now that I have sunk a fair amount of time into the game things have turned around and I am having amazing fun. I'm no super-soldier but I'm slowly bringing my k/d up but more importantly I'm having a blast playing. It is very easy to be fodder in this game. When there are hundreds of people engaging in a single battle it can get really easy to get caught up throwing yourself into a meatgrinder over and over again. Over time you will begin to recognize and avoid these situations. Instead of always getting beaten to the punch you'll start suprising other people.

THere is a great deal of satisfaction to be had in this game and there are certain situations that can occur that have to be seen to be believed.

This is an incredible, vast, demanding game that does requires a bit of investment to see a return. If you are willing to put that time in you will be rewarded with gaming situations unlike any you have ever experienced.

But, as I said, you have to be willing to eat those first 100 deaths like I did. You can't let dying frustrate you because it's the only way to learn what *not* to do.

Oh, sorry for the double. Two other things:

I've gotten support xp both attacking and defending I'm almost positive. Both engy and medic. Maybe I'm crazy but I dunno...I'm pretty sure I even fixed a turret on an enemy base and got xp for it. The medic xp I *know* they dole out at all times so not sure about that.

RE SOLO PLAY

Everyone says it is impossible or not fun but I do fine, frankly. You have to learn how to play solo and I am not saying that solo is the best way to play but I have ranked up to like 12 by soloing 95% of the time. I mostly solo as a heavy assault but I change class frequently depending on the situation. It really pays to cert out the cheap stuff on ALL the classes because changing classes to fit the situation is one of the best ways of earning xp.

I like to play solo because I take a lot of breaks and I like to switch up playstyles and randomly tool around in a tank and stuff like that.

Granted, my learning curve may have been a lot kinder if I had joined an outfit but now that I am learning the game and getting comfortable I have no problems soloing effectively. It definiely takes some experience to get comfortable though.

My new favorite class is the Light Assault. I pull out the Engineer and Heavy Assault when I have to, but the LA is where it's at.

I threw down cash for the Solaris SF carbine (works on both LA and Engie).
Loadout:
Solaris SF (Default carbine with Auto, burst, and Single Fire modes)
Reflex x2 sight (red dot, minor magnification)
Suppressor (don't show up on mini-map, increased damage falloff past medium range)
Underbarrel Grenade Launcher (2 rounds. One hit kill on infantry)
Soft point ammo (increased damage at medium range)

With a couple of points in the Jetpack ability, I was able to easily scale the walls of the Amp station, and rain hot firey death down on the enemy. The noobtube guarantees kills, the silencer keeps me from being spotted, and I can quickly get the drop on people. The fact that I can also use it on my engie is just a bonus.

Not sure if I want more jetpack next, or C4.

Also, I am a terrible Scythe pilot. But I can't stop.

Also, these three videos about capturing the major bases cleared up a lot of confusion for me. Very very helpful info not provided by the tutorial.

Yeah, I'm terrible and still figuring out the game, but I second (third? fourth?) the idea of giving the game a few hours to open up. There was a moment where I jumped on a full carrier plane and was suddenly dropped over a capture point with everyone else, that it all clicked. I love that it can be totally disorganized one moment, and very strategic and cooperative another.

I also don't see myself doing much squad-play, as I like the idea of a persistent world that I can jump into for 20-30 minute experimental sessions. As long as there's not a patch to install I can get into the game pretty quickly, and thanks to instant deploy I can get into the thick of something without having to travel to the action.

Its really the idea that the game will be expanding and getting crazier in time that I think will keep this installed on my macbook for a while.

Great information, presented in possibly the most annoying way possible.

Yeah, this game desperately needs a proper tutorial. I think I've figured most if it out through trial and error, and by being in squads with experienced players. Of course, I still discover new things by accident, which usually gets me killed. For example, in one of my first firefights, I hit the 'B' key by mistake. Whoops.

I also learned that I should remap the "leave aircraft key" to something other than 'E'.

Yeah I think that sunderer trick will be patched out cause the whole go through shields ability is supposed to last only for a couple seconds. Personally I think they need to change it so you can't deploy sunderers inside shielded bases. Oh and they definitely should let infiltrators sabotage sunderers, say cause them to stop working for a minute or two.

Oh the floating carriers look freaking awesome, I'd love to fight on one of those. Oh thanks to whoever said their light assault gear with the grenade launcher. I was looking for that.

I'm pretty sure the shield piercing mod for the Sunderer is mutually exclusive with the deploy mod.

It is but if you noticed in the beginning of the video he turned on the shield blocker. It's only suppose to let you through a shield for a couple seconds. My guess is that it you need it only to get in, while exiting a base doesn't require it.

So I have my 1-point armor certs and my vehicle ammo and 1.25x zoom certs; I have my Sunderer AMS cert. I understand stock weapon scopes are next on the list. What do you guys prefer? Reflex ones were recommended up thread, though not sure if 1x or 2x are recommended. And I understand the 3.4x non-laser is the way to go for longer-range work. It's a shame you can't preview these things like you can preview weapons.

I have two for my medic's rifle: I've got the outline 1x scope (Which is murderously useful in massive hall-to-hall), and a 3.4x non-laser that I used in wide-open fights at medium range. I am quite happy with both, though I could definitely use the foregrip for the 3.4x. (Or the burst rifle.)

There was a video a bit back, with all the scopes previewed. I use the vanu reflex scope which is nice as it's a hologram scope, which gives you a lot more peripheral view.

Yeah, those were pretty helpful, almost in spite of themselves
