Eh? It's just crowd-sourced angel investing. Think of that way and it makes great sense.

I've gotten some excellent results from it already - FTL came out, and I'm playing the Hispaniola: Conquistadore beta and having fun. The massive floor-sized Ogre game is coming along (blast from the past), and Project Eternity is looking good at an early stage. So is Wasteland 2.

But if one of them fails, well, that's investing. I'll risk $20-$50 on a project I like, if it likely won't get done otherwise (or not done well).

My mind is blown. Don't you invest to get your money back and then some? You know, like make a profit? THIS IS NOT MAKING A PROFIT. Just wait until the damn dasgdslkof890ru04w3u09480t84hfhy!!!!!!! *please stand by*

Think of it as being a patron of the arts, my good man. Profit is so bourgeoisie.

Kidding aside, I really do see it more as a form of patronage instead of the "power to the consumer, down with the publishers" vibe.
As a consumer, it does not make sense to back a kickstarter. As a publisher, it does not make sense to fund these projects. But if every economic agent acts rationally, you'll see a deficit in the "creative" stuff. At least, that's the justification as to why, in my country at least, some forms of art get public funding.
I fully understand why people are wary of kickstarter, even saying some projects are abusive. But I don't agree with the overall cynicism.

My data plan is happy we're on a new page.

Heads up: Indie Gala has Star Wolves 3: Civil War and 6 other non spacey games for $3.90ish

Are any of those games any good?

I always think of it more like a nifty pre-order system but patronage is a thing too.

Think of it this way, if you had a game you wanted made, wouldn't it cost the entire kickstarter goal to make it yourself? You're getting quite a bargain by only paying 1/10000 of it.

I really think the video game industry needs a proper patronage system. I'd love to see what a full creative studio could do with a sizable budget, great ideas and no pressure to produce anything other than a fantastic video games--with little to no profit expectations. If I ever win the lottery, I plan on being a such a patron. I'd actually love to commission paintings in real life. I wish I still lived near RISD. Talented, poor artists over there.

I've had my eyes on King's Bounty for a while, It has had some favorable reviews.

Sold! For $4 how can you go wrong?

It's more patronage, like giving money to a theater so they can pay salaries and put on great shows that you'll enjoy. Once upon a time, only kings and similarly rich people could do that in any meaningful way, but the advent of the Internet lets a lot of us small fry cooperate and fund ideas that sound promising.

All we get out of it is a game, like the theater patron just gets a play, not a share of the profits.

FTL finally on sale!

$6 instead of $10. Might be enough to bite.

It's definitely worth $6, Stele. If you've ever admired any of the spaceship miniatures games out there, this is an excellent system that will remind of those. Especially if you ever played Traveller.

I bit already. Played a couple games. Posted over in the FTL thread.

So I tried Drox Operative again...and now that I've watched a couple of videos, I actually have a vague idea of what I'm doing. Kind of fun !

Yaaaaaay!

Nice! Need to add that to the collection.

Do you nerds store those in a database?

Imgur, pay $3 for an unlimited account, store any cool/funny image I want there.

So, yes.

+1 - though I tend to use other people's and store it on my computer. I need to get an account at some point *whistles innocently*

It's worth it, seriously.

*sigh*

That's what I get for conveying humor through pesky written words.

Imgur is a database-driven, dynamic site.

So, yes.

Hey guys, I am new here (so hello there! nice to meet you all) and I had a problem relating to this genre that I was hoping for some advice on.

Now I am a typical gamer with a job, and to add to that I am also attending university, so my gaming time is incredibly limited. I do however love the idea and concept of these strategy/sim type games and find my Steam library full of them. (Civ 4/5, Eve Online, X3, Total War, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Starcraft 2 etc. I own them all!) Unfortunately due to the gaming time I have it is extremely difficult for me to dive into these games fully. If I have an hour to play a game I will boot up X3 or some other sim and try to play, but I often end up quitting the game about ten minutes later due to my lack of knowledge of the game.

In order to solve this issue, I have now resorted to Youtube videos of other people playing these awesome games instead of me playing them myself, after a hard day of work/school this pleases me more than reading a manual or fiddling in the game.

Has anyone else had this problem? How have you all dealt with this as gamers with jobs? Am I doomed to abandon this genre completely?

Hi there Sdnick, welcome!

So to clarify, you're having trouble finding a space game you can click with in a minimal amount of time?
