2012, end of the world, or end of your pile? - the 12 month thread

How's Binding of Isaac treating you?

Well it certainly didn't stop you from being a filthy enabler!

Well, sure, but that's in my job description.

Agreed

Don't worry Min. Games are like good friends. You might not get to be with them for a while, but when you catch up, you can start up exactly where you left off (as long as the save isn't corrupt/memory card missing and you re-familiarise yourself with the control setup).

I just updated Backloggery for like the first time in three months!

It's odd: I made such incredible progress the first half of the year, but have really bogged down with some crazy-long games the last few months, and spending a lot of time doing adult things like writing, time with family, job hunting, etc. Not a lot of gaming time to be had lately.

This is like when I look back at June through September. I was going out more, being more social, and focusing on other hobbies. Now that winter has come and the days are short I find myself wanting to do those things less. I want to write instead of draw and I want to play video games instead of spending half my day in the city. Once upon a time I would have felt bad or pathetic, but after listening to the Conference Call where all the hosts with my life experience than I say this stuff just phases in and out, eh, I'm fine with that. So I'll catch up on my pile while I can, because once the clock turns back and the weather heats up I'll probably be a lot more interested in anything other than video games.

And I am fine with that.

November wasn't quite as productive, and thanks to Black Friday and overall weakness I've added more than a few games on. So not much pile progress on the whole.

However, I think I've hit a Clocky style situation. I love Dragon's Dogma. Every time I sit down and play it I have a good time and get sucked in. But after throwing 25 or so hours into it I feel like there's nothing new for me. I got what the game has to offer, so I'm no longer addicted, dying to play more. So when it comes time to play a game, I know I'll enjoy it, but I'd much rather put a new game in.

I've decided I'm not going to force myself to beat the game. If I do, I'll enjoy it a lot less because I'll be doing it as a chore. But this means it won't be coming off my pile any time soon, and truth told, I'm okay with that.

I am curious how I should label NHL 13, though, and if I should separate the Sly Cooper Collection (I'm keeping Ico/Shadow of the Colossus together as they're both evidently pretty short games).

Good to note, though, that I should be done Pokemon White soon!

For November:

Added Sticker Star, Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U
Beaten/Completed: Death Rally (iOS), Kirby's Adventure, Kirby's Dream Land 2

So pile neutral, and it should remain that way until the holiday. Hoping to finish Sticker Star, NSMB U and more of the Kirby Collection before end of the year. Fortunately, I've got some spare vacation days to burn next month so that will help.

If anyone is looking for a motivator to work exclusively through their Xbox 360 pile yell out. We are looking for a fourth member to get in on the Great True Achievement Score Chase for 2013.

I found the weekly score chases very motivating myself, if you like the sound of it, yell out and drop some links in here.

Just to be clear, this is for the 'B' team. We're in it for sh*ts and giggles. The 'A' team is already founded, and shooting for a top 50 finish (out of a field of 100).

Personally, I've gone back on forth on this kind of thing in the past. Currently though, I have games like that split out. It does make my pile look bigger (which is why I used to list them in a single entry), but it also means I can tackle things in discrete chunks, so it's easier to make progress.

For example, Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition is on my list, and is broken out in 6 distinct entries (base game, the expansion, and 4 alternate, mini-campaigns). I know when I finish the base game, I probably won't want to jump right in the expansion, which I would feel compelled to do if it were one entry.

Let's see, for November:

Acquired:

  • GoldenEye 007
  • Monster Hunter Tri
  • Art Style: Rotozoa

Beat:

  • Super Paper Mario

I'll try to do better for December. It helps that I'm unlikely to have any money for new games for awhile.

I didn't focus enough actually beat anything. I did play a bunch of stuff though

  • Borderlands 2
  • Dragon Age: Origins
  • Longest Journey
  • Metroid: Other M
  • Pokemon White 2
  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Terraria
  • Trine 2

I have been thinking that I might mark Terraria as beaten though. Technically, it is actually beatable (there are bosses), but I don't actually care about that. What I like about Terraria is the mining / exploring and upgrading my equipment so I can mine and explore more effectively. I've already marked it as a Favorite in steam, and I know want to put more time into it, but I have 14 hours now which feels like enough to not consider it a pile game anymore. The main reason I haven't done that yet, is that I'm worried if it isn't on my pile, I won't "allow" myself to play it.

November update!

Remaining Pile: 80 (61 beaten, 38 added, 18 removed, Total Pile Change: -39)

That's a grand total change of... -1 game for the pile this month! Darn sales!

At least I have finally played the Half-Life series.

Think I'm going to clean up in December and focus on finishing the two games I've been picking away at for three or more months before I start anything else new. Going to be a challenge, I think...

Yep, it's been 3 months since an update...So far this year: 36 games beaten, 50 added Activity since last update is in bold.

Games shamefully purchased this month

  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star

I, Minarchist, solemnly pledge to remain incredibly awesome just like I am now. Also, to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.[/quote]

December update. Finally got over my MMORPG relapse and banished GW2 and WoW:MOP from my life again. There is just something in my personality that doesn't allow me to play that type of game casually. The thing that baffles me about my brain is, that I have no problem sinking hundreds of hours into MMOs, but am intimidated by an RPG like Dragon Age, Fallout 3 or Saints Row 3rd, because they may be 100h long. Any ideas how to beat that?

For now, I am sticking to stuff that can be played on a casual 15-60 minute basis and doesn't have an elaborate story that I could forget when not playing for a few weeks.

Also removed Darwinia from the list of games to play. I tried to play it many months back and the tutorial and controls being crazy unobtrusive turned me off enough to not care about a game that cost me a buck or two. And sparkleponies was a nice distraction for a day or two, but as someone said before, a joke only carries itself so long.

Anyone want to disable me on Primordia? I enjoyed the demo and I'm having trouble talking myself out of a pre-order so I can get a DRM copy and a key for the inevitable Steam version :\

Let's just see if you can disenable yourself. If you can't do it, no one can:

Nicely played

Started a 3rd Saints Row the Third playthrough last night. Man, this game is just too good. I'll get to Dishonored sometime.

Help, the respective threads here and on IT are enabling me on Farcry 3. Please disable me. Is there maybe some Methadone in my backlog that would scratch a similar itch?

Luggage wrote:

I see STALKER and Fallout 3 in your backloggery. They're no tropical paradise but they should be open-world enough to scratch the itch. Probably want to do some work getting them modded up first though.

Luggage wrote:

Listen to Shoptroll, but if the itch is that great, wait until the Christmas Steam Sale. It 'might' be cheaper, or the urge may have passed fully by then. Either way, you know you can get it then if you still want to.

If it makes it any easier, I had a similar dilemma with Borderlands 2. I didn't buy it, and now I am looking forward to the inevitable sale on the inevitable game of the year disc with all of the DLC. It's going to be a while off, but it's now on the long term radar, so I can forget about it, and keep working on the pile.

Changing my format some to only list existing games on my pile. I also sorted them by date, so it's more obvious which games have really been sitting around forever (DQ9).

As requested, new thread for 2013 is now open, ready for business.

Enjoy!

Does that mean this thread can now be used for excessive navel gazing? Because I am so down for that. I'm feeling all kinds of reflective lately.

Feel free to tell us how awesome you did this year

I'm down with navel gazing although I'm going to try and push through some of my recent purchases before I give a final report.

I'll gladly counter-balance it with my massive pile of fail

That's a thumbs up from me too! Give us your damage, you may just be the poster child for these threads, going forward!

Here's how it breaks down for me: I added 49 new games to the pile this year. Of those games I added, I beat or completed 15 and gave up on 14, leaving 20 unfinished. From my pile last year, I beat 10 games and gave up on 35. If you count giving up on a game as removing it from the pile (and I do), then I'm up 9 games this year alone and 54 games from last year. That's nice progress.

And yet. Adding an average of one game per week is insane and doesn't track with the rate at which I'm actually finishing them. Granted, a number of those new games were gifts in the Steam summer sale or else were console games borrowed from friends. But the overall point is that I'm acquiring way, way too many games and need to knock it off.

The last few months, I've pretty much been too poor to buy games. I've been spending my money on other things and just haven't had a whole lot leftover for games. I've also been gaming a lot less overall and spending more of my free time doing things like reading and playing board games with my wife. And you know what? I've been happier for it, and I'm enjoying video games more now than I have in years.

An unexpected side effect of not being able to buy new games, and spending less time gaming in general, is that I've changed the way that I play. I noticed it first with my 3DS because that's the system where I've had the smallest backlog. When I ran out of new games to play or got tired of the games I had, I couldn't go buy new games that had caught my eye. Instead I replayed games to get all the collectibles or gave second chances to games I'd burned out on and abandoned.

It reminds me of the way I played games as a kid. I'd like to keep that kind of fun and focus going into 2013, and I still might make a few edits to my pile to help make that happen.

I've decided to stop worrying about clearing the pile so much instead of feeling guilty, which is working great for me at the moment. It allows me to feel happier when I'm playing a game like NHL 13, which isn't going to be beaten in a traditional sense. It is there for fun.

I'm replaying Mega Man X for two reasons: 1) I'm recording footage for a video I'm going to create, and 2) it's been so long and the game is still so fun. It's great to go back and enjoy it (of course, it's not a very long game so it's easy to play my fill).

I've gone back and replayed Gears of War 3 with GWJ folks, or dove into Mark of the Ninja a second time, and had a blast.

It's a lot more like playing games when I was younger, where I played for what I was in the mood for. I took the opportunity last night to play The Last Story when I could, but I'm not dying to find any time I can to squeeze it in. I'm enjoying it at my own pace when I know I'll have time to get into it.

I have Borderlands 2 and Doom 3 sitting there, started, not finished, and am okay with that.

I do want to be productive with the pile, but I want to enjoy my games. And so I am.
