Wii U Catch-All

EvilHomer3K: do you think your kids will still be interested enough in the Wii to warrant purchasing a replacement by the time it dies? Sure, tomorrow would be one thing. Is two years out a different story, assuming this is available then?

I do think they'll still be interested in it in 2 years. They are 7 and 9 currently so they won't be too old for their Wii ( ). I wouldn't buy a Wii mini then, though. I'm not sure where my cutoff is but I believe our Wii will die soon. If it is in the next few months I'd be happy to get a new/used Wii cheap. If it is this summer or later (or any time after a Wii U price drop) I would likely buy a Wii U.

I was reading Digital Foundry's writeup on the Wii U, and something jumped out at me: they claim that the Wii U in 1080p mode isn't actually natively rendering in 1080p, but is rather running an upscaler on a 720p image. Is that correct? If so, that's quite a disappointment on a technical level (I'm still going to buy one at some point for the awesome games regardless).

I added everyone from the Wii U list to my friends list. (Ulairi)

It's kind of funny listening to podcast when they talk about the Wii U. The thing isn't perfect (seriously, hitting the home button to add friends? over scanning, etc.) but overall it has a pretty great launch line up both physical and digital downloads (including the indie stuff), no one really talks about Nintendo getting rid of the fees for indie developers to submit patches for their games. That is pretty amazing! I kind of wish Nintendo rolled out the 10% off the download games for all systems but that's still kind of nice. But, it's obvious that the Wii U is going to be another Wii when it comes to the traditional games press. They won't play it unless it's a big Nintendo title. they'll then complain about how there is nothing to play on it. When a game is released on the Wii U, they'll complain that they'd rather play it on Xbox 3 or PS4 and then go back to complaining how the Wii U has no games. It's a circle of silliness.

From what I understand that the games are running an upscaler on a 720p image not that the Wii U cannot run games at 1080p. So, it's just like the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Is anyone else having a problem with the WiiU and I'm not sure what the term is but on my TV, the screen seems like it is zoomed in with pieces of the UI off screen, it's like it isn't formatted correctly for my TV even though it's 720p. Is it called oversampling? I don't know. Should I be running it at 1080i?

I had the same problem. There is a setting that allows you to adjust the display. When I get home in eight hours I can give you more details on where to find it if you haven't found it yet.

The setting is buried inside Miiverse. Miiverse->user menu->settings/other->miiverse settings->screen size.

I'm glad they put it where it was easy to find ;).

Don't forget that if you add friends in the Home-->Friends menu, the people that you've added won't get a notification. You need to be in Miiverse, search for them, and then "Send Friend Request" for anyone to get a notification. Since I saw you post here, I was able to add you but I wanted to throw the reminder out there.

Anyone else who has sent friend requests and not received responses, this may be the problem. I know that I haven't purposely ignored any GWJers, but without a notification I'm sure I missed people.

That is just stupid. Completely and utterly stupid.

But, I'll readd everybody.

Won't get notification like the friends thing won't strobe, or won't get notification like YOU WILL NOT FIND OUT EVER?

That looks like it only works for the Miiverse and not the system as a whole? I did that and the arrows were off kilter but I don't know if that fixes the system in general. Why isn't this feature in the settings menu? Because, Nintendo is stupid.

Desram wrote:

The way I understand it, if you add someone using Home button--->Friends, then it works like the old friend codes. There is no notification AT ALL, but if you both add each other in that menu you become friends. I was able to friend up Ulairi this way because I saw his post here.

If you go into Miiverse and search for someone, then view their profile, there is a "Send Friend Request" button. As far as I know, using this button is the only way that someone will receive any Friend Request.

Noticed this too. Seems like if I set my tv to "Just Scan" instead of "16:9" it fits better.

My TV is from 2006 and I'm not sure if it has that option. ]I cannot find it anyway

European launch tomorrow and I have a Premium pack pre-ordered!

Very excited after reading this thread despite some of the negative comments. So excited I may even go to the midnight launch - something I've never done previously.

Any other Europeans on this site? Any planning on getting a WiiU?

You know, the one thing I do wish is that they had included a wii remote plus in the deluxe package. I only have one plus add on and am not sure where it is since I had only one game that used it. They packaged a game in the box that has modes I can't even play.

Yes, that's correct. Its still strange that none of the current games are native 1080p. You would think that it would be capable of it.

We've got 4 oldschool WiiMotes, and were thoroughly crushed when we wanted to do some 3-player games in Nintendo Land that required WiiMotionPlus.

My wife went over to Amazon and picked up a couple of the plugins, but I really wish they included a WiiMote+ of MotionPlus addon in the Deluxe box.

So Hector Martin, a dude who is working on hacking the Wii U, has posted some specs on Twitter.

Basically the CPU is three cores at 1.24 Ghz and based of the same architecture as the Wii. However, he thinks it is actually a "saner" - see, less complex and easier to code for - design than the Xbox 360 and PS3. The GPU is clocked at about 550 MHz. And he's working on cracking the security core which he says doesn't seem much different than the Wii's.

I'm really surprised with how well I'm enjoying Miiverse. It is really forward looking and I'm surprised it came from Nintendo. I cannot wait until they have the iOS/web apps. This is kind of how I want online console gaming to work, it actually is building a sense of community that I never felt from the PS3 or Xbox 360.

For anyone in need of a Wiimote+, you can get one with the game Flingsmash, and Toys R Us has it for $25 right now.

I picked up a Wii UDraw as part of Brown Thursday. In line I heard people talking about picking up the "WiiU Draw" (the following was spaced by how they mentioned it). The next day I showed my wife a demo of the Wii U and explained how the tablet part of the new console worked. She then asked if I didn't already pick up the Wii table thing- the WiiU Draw. Man, the potential marketplace confusion on this is insane.

Also, I made some mentions in the THQ thread about why I think there were so many UDraw deals as a part of Brown Thursday/Black Friday. I do think that they likely saw an opportunity to seize some of the marketplace confusion in order to unload more units.

I picked up the 32GB version at launch.

Surprisingly, I really love some of those Nintendo Land games (but on the other hand I love all those Warioware games anyhow).

So far I have ZombiU, Assassin's Creed III, New Super Mario Bros. U, Scribblenauts Unlimited and Nintendo Land.

ZombiU has some really interesting mechanics, but alas, I stink at it.

I can't do anymore playing on the console until Christmas since it is a surprise for my family (I redid all the Mii's by loading up the Wii and editing the Mii's on the Wii U gamepad to get them as close as possible).

I decided against doing the system transfer because I don't want to clog up any of my internal memory with games I might never go back too. For now, I will keep both systems hooked up.

Oh, and the Wii game FlingSmash comes with a nice black wiimote to match the 32gb console.

I highly recommend investing in the Nerf Armor for the Gamepad, just in case...

Has anyone picked up Madden for the Wii U? If so, how is it?

I can't help but say this: So, the Wii U is three Gamecubes overclocked and taped together?

I know, I know, there's a lot more to it than that.

Don't think so. Try asking/looking in miiverse

Apparently the Wii U version is a well done port, but it drops one big feature the other consoles have: New physics engine. Admittedly that was the big draw this year along with the complete revamp for franchise mode. Personally, this is the tick year while next year should be a tock and more refined.

The gamepad stuff seems pretty cool, but I'd personally wait for them to get more development time under their belts. Of course, I already have Madden 13 (and don't have a Wii U).

Haha, I prefer the idea of 9 Gamecubes taped together ;).

Heads up: Toy's R us are having a Buy One Get One 50% off sale this week on Wii U games.

Miiverse is so awesome! Really hope MS and Sony copy this for their next consoles!

Only downside is that it does not open up instantly but takes 15-20sec to load

Also Sonic is really fun, lots to unlock in single player and the (european) community seems nice.

So my Wii U gamepad broke within a week of buying the thing. Just turned completely off and won't charge or anything now. I don't want to return it to the store since I already transferred all my Wii data over to it which deleted it off the Wii, so I'm trying one last ditch effort to save it before I see how Nintendo handles RMAs for the gamepad. I went and bought a tiny screwdriver to get at the gamepad battery, I'm going to try unplugging it and leaving it that way for a half hour or so to see if that resets something in it and lets it start up again.

Fingers crossed. Feeling pretty bad about Nintendo's apparent lack of quality control this time around.

Sorry to hear it. Hopefully, taking the battery out for bit and putting it back in will reset it for you. If not, hopefully Nintendo will get you fixed up pretty quick.
