Gaming Confessions & Blasphemy

I think Minecraft is vastly overrated, and notch is given way too much credit for being a good game designer when he essentially just copied Infiniminer and got lucky that his version of the game became so popular. I think articles that interview him for advice on good game design and how to make it in the business is like interviewing a lotto winner on how to become wealthy.

This. This so hard.

I got a Game Genie for christmas one year and immediately found that it made games less fun. Beat Mega Man in a couple of hours because I had enabled invincibility, then sat there staring at a wall. There was a life lesson in there somewhere.

Oddly enough, I think Game Genie is what gave me the confidence to try some of those older NES games to completion. I don't remember how old I was when I stayed at a friend's house over night. He let me play Godzilla: Monster of Monsters with the game genie, a game that I had labeled as being too hard for myself and needing my older brother to help out on, and beat it. I had played a couple other games with the game genie that weekend as well.

When I went home I ended up popping Godzilla: Monster of Monsters into my NES and decided to try and tackle it myself. It was tough and I had to restart some of the levels, but I learned that if I have patience and put a real effort into it I can beat these games on my own.

I do not recall if we had a SNES yet or not, though I did play NES games still when we got the SNES. So I could have been anywhere from six years old to nine years old.

I totally get this point of view. And I wasn't really clamoring for a new ending... I mostly watched the hulk-size storm mostly with amusement. A few articles summed up nicely for me that the ending was bad for these reasons. I watched the Indoctrination theory videos on YouTube and thought... hmmmm... that is a pretty good explination, though they could have explained MUCH better.

I was, however, glad to see that Bioware took the time to add a little more to the ending of the game, as it really did make it much more enjoyable to see in the end of that trek. It made the synthesis ending go from... "did I just force the entire galaxy to go Reaper-Borg?" to "I just elevated the entire galaxy into a hybrid that has access to the records of the entire history of the galaxy for our rebuilding and new life together as a galactic community. Cool!"

THAT was really the crux of my concern. For a game that was all about your choices, a hanging "So what do you think happened?" was really a poor choice there. It was the end of the trilogy, not part 3 of 4. Cliffhangers are only good endings when more is coming.

So yeah, in summary... agree that the fans got way out of control and were really obnoxious, but was glad to see some extra epilogue added to the end so I knew what happened at how my choices actually impacted the galaxy as a whole as was long suggested would be the case. For what its worth, I still consider 3 to be the best of the series, even with the ending disappointment for the first version of the ending. The RPG and 3PS shooter were pretty ideally mixed there to be engaging in combat while still requiring me to think things through.

Listening to the Podcast and decided to jump in on this insanity:

1) I also skipped large portions of the Nintendo offerings. NES when it came out. SNES in 1995 when I graduated College and got my first real paycheck, just to play Madden, NHL, and Zelda LTTP. Never played another Zelda game until I downloaded Ocarina on the Wii virtual console last year. Never finished a single Zelda game.

2) As a 22 Year old man playing Zelda link to the past, I had the hint line on speed dial and paid real money to get more hints.

3) I stopped gaming completely from the period of 1997 to 2002 and it was Tom Clancy' Splinter Cell on the PC that got me back into my favorite hobby. But I didn't purchase a console until the first Xbox in 2003-2004. I never owned a PS1, Sega anything, Nintendo Game Cube, Nintendo 64, etc.

3) I couldn't finish DeadSpace II, and actually sold it back before i could even feel the shame of quiting the game.

My confession: I completely suck at and dislike almost all platformers. And I dislike Mario and all the, from my perspective, overblown Nintendo-nostalgia around them. Way back in my original NES days I played the crap out of Super Mario Bros, but that was probably the last time I seriously tackled and or had the patience for such a game.

I try again and again to get back into them, especially over the last few years when I've actually had $$ to buy them (Sonic, Castlevania, Trine, LBP, Outland, Rayman Origins, etc.) but never got past a couple hours of frustration and dying. I do ok at other genres that mix in light platforming (Shadow Complex, Uncharted, Dust, Mark of the Ninja, even Dark Souls), but I think I've finally resigned myself to never buying another platformer; I just plain suck too badly at them. It's also why I don't own any Nintendo products except a dust-gathering Wii, and probably why I won't get a Wii U either.

I've never listened to a single GWJ podcast.

I've been a member for almost 5 years and still haven't gotten around to it.

You should at least listen to the one about Elk Hunt.

My desire to play multiplayer games waxes and wanes.

At most, I'll be up for it maybe 2 days a week. At low points, I don't want to deal with other people in my games for weeks at a time. Right now it's at a low point.

I listened to it back when I was in college and a little after. Married now, usually my time that's free goes to gaming. Maybe I should start listening to it on Tuesdays while she's off playing D&D though. Always enjoyed it before. Russ Pitts is still on right?

Gamers do not have a right to be emotionally satisfied or made to feel like their choices mattered,

In almost any other scenario, you'd have me at full agreement, but when they advertised specifically stating that this series would do exactly that (feel how their choices mattered throughout the game)... then I would argue that the dev does have some responsibility to do what they said they would do for your purchase of the game.

Kind of the same as the PS3 Skyrim's community's unhappiness that has dragged on for some time about how their version of the game was supposed to have parity with Xbox360's version with regards to stability and additional content. As of yet, PS3 has been very late to all the patches (not even any discussion or statement made on when to expect 1.8 for PS3), much less any official statment of DLC for the PS3 outside of "we're working on some, but we won't say what additional content to expect"... while there is interviews and a back of game case statement that additional content will be forthcoming, that I would expect gamers to have some "entitlement" on the issue.

If you say you're going to do something, then as a creator of content, there is the expectation that you will. Gamer rage is to follow if you do not. The actions you choose to take from there are really up to you as a content creator. Bioware/EA chose to revise their creation to do so. Was that the best option? Up for debate, but it DID shut everyone up on the ending. Bioware, the PS3 community is still waiting on, and as of yet, there doesn't seem to be anything new, but we'll wait and see.

Back on topic...
I love DLC and totally don't care about paying for it if I enjoyed the original game.
Bought all the DLC for Fallout 3, Oblivion (including the multiple hideouts and the new quests, and yes, horse armor too because it was on special when I bought the rest), Fallout New Vegas, and totally will for Skyrim should it ever come out for PS3. Did the same thing for both Arkham games (love the challenge maps, dunno why as they are a little pointless). Also did for the Assassin's Creed games, knowing full well they were really only really running missions, and not really as complex as the missions in the main game. I love them, and I'm totally willing to give more money to those developers that make enjoyable games.

I don't get why people say Diablo III has great graphics or is pretty.

I guess they're hi-res, and some of the overworld sections are passable, but most of the dungeons consist of bland, near identical rooms or bland, near-identical caves. The art direction, by and large, looks like something pulled from middle schoolers tasked to design something "dark" or "metal".

I'm sure the makers of ME3 thought that their ending was satisfactory. I'm sure they thought that what they made addressed a lot of "player choice". I'm in a creative field, and I don't know anyone who sets out to make a piece of art that is bad. When a movie gets made that doesn't live up to the trailer's promise of entertaining me, I don't demand that they make the movie again. People were emotionally invested in the Star Wars characters, and did they demand Lucas remake them to make them happy? Well, I'm sure some did, but for the most part, we cursed George for sh*tting on a beloved piece of our childhood and we moved on. The creators of ME3 probably thought they were fulfilling their back of the box stuff. Gamers didn't think so, and they felt entitled to demand a change. I'm just sad that Bioware caved because it set a bad precedent.

Also, being upset that an ending isn't what you want it to be is one thing. I would call that entitlement to demand a change. Being angry that a game runs like garbage on your system is another entirely. Not at all the same thing. PS3 Skyrim fans have every right to be upset because the game doesn't run as promised. And they have no promised DLC. ME3 fans said that the artistic choices that the creators made were wrong and they demanded they get it right. That's kind of crappy in my opinion. Especially being on the side of making art myself.

Never owned a console until I got the wii when it came out... I got it for parties... I later got a free ps3 with a TV. (PC gaming is soo much better.)

I enjoyed ME3's ending before they "fixed" it.

Instead of playing Uncharted, I just watched the cutscenes on youtube.

I love valve but can't stand Counter Strike. Team Fortress Classic was better in 2000 and TF2 is better now.

I enjoy having a Prima guide so that I don't miss any content when I only play a game once.

Did you ever see this?

I really have no desire to revist this debate, but I'll just say this: Both sides there had valid arguments. I was glad to have the extra scenes as they established more context for what happened. I view it kind of like a director's cut. Blade Runner is Blade Runner, but Blade Runner was much better in the extended edition/director's cut (though my lack of understanding the first time I saw the movie may have been because I was like 15 and used to Star Wars for sci-fi).

Would it have been better for all of us to be complaining about how much the ending sucked, EA/Bioware to take notice and say wow, people did not understand what we were going for, let's clarify rather than the crazy amount of protests and demands for a new ending? Yar, much. Certainly would have been better than spending weeks avoiding this discussion that was a plague unto the land of the intrawebs' tubes.

since theres all these posts bout not listening to the CC

I just became a member of the forums and started listening this past summer in July. since then I have back tracked and listened to every episode from the most recent to about episode 150, I have even listened to newer ones 2-3 times

And yes, I do have a girlfriend, a job, and I'm in college.

Fair enough. I never meant to start an argument... The reason I'm on GWJ is because of the amiable nature of the conversation here.

There are many times I'll install a game to patch it, and play for <5 minutes. Hence the tag.

Never owned an NES or SNES. Never finished a Zelda game. I did play Adventure on a VAX mainframe, though.

I think story, choice and narrative in games as they are today is overrated, and I'm much more likely to finish a game such as an RPG if the game engine/system is fun. Fun beats story for me every time. Emergent gameplay or personal narrative is much more interesting.

I'm completely baffled by games like DOTA2 and League of Legends. I mean, i think i understand how they work, i just have no idea how i would get any better at playing. Never felt older than at PAX in a room of like 2000 people watching LoL on big screens. Like looking at your own death.

I need to stop buying games i don't have time to play. Seriously.

I think people need to stop taking games so seriously. Ties into the ME3 ending comment above. For real. They're games, people. Chill out.

1) I never finished Bioshock. I remembered the first part of it was fun and the world was interesting. I also remembered that I got bored looking for plants or something of that sort and got distracted by other games. I think it was Mount and Blade or maybe Oblivion. It's good to hear that it wasn't just me that thought it was just mediocre.

2) I hate day[9], the sc2 personality. I think he takes too long to make a point and is narcissistic. His "oooHHH" and "ahhhhs" are disruptive instead of informative or interesting when he's casting a tournament, especially when he does it over someone like dApollo that's making an interest observation.

3) I've played a lot of Halo and COD multiplayer and I think it's really fun. I don't use a headset. While I've played most of the Halos and CoDs, I've only beaten halo 1, Halo 2, COD 1, and CoD: MW and most of my time is spent in multiplayer.

4) I couldn't get into Batman: AC for some reason. I loved Batman: AA and even replayed it on harder difficulties. Maybe the novelty of the combat system and being Batman wore off.

5) I think the guys on the GWJ podcast focus too much on story in lieu of whether the gameplay is fun or not. Story is not enough for me to actually play through a game if it's not fun or if it's repetitive, ie, Diablo 3, GTA4, Bioshock, etc. Conversely I can spend hundred of hours on game like Mount and Blade and with it's lack of story. Don't get me wrong, having a good story definitely helps. I finished Alan Wake even though the gameplay got repetitive because of the story (if the game was any longer I don't think I would've finished it even if the story was a pageturner). They also use "tropes" too often every since tvtropes

any time I see a bunch of soldiers/wizards/space marines bouncing around like over-caffeinated kangaroos it fills me with rage.

There are still games that you can bunny hop? I thought that i was only possible on games based on the HL1 or HL2 engines.

I stopped watching day9 for exactly those reasons. I still watch Husky though o.O

I haven't played SC2 in over a year but I still keep up with commentary/tournaments whenever possible.
I don't know... I get a lot more enjoyment out of watching people play it than I do playing myself. My adrenaline triggers way too easily though, so by the end of a 15 minute match up I'm so shaky I can barely type

I never listened to a podcast either. Tried once, but my grasp of the English language is too feeble to comprehend the silly banter. Especially during the circumstances I would listen to the podcasts: on the subway or train during my commute, not the most quiet environment either

Maybe I should give it another try, I only gave it one shot years ago.

I'll try clicking Post only once, too.

Did you ever see this?

That is what I watched actually.

More confessions.

Never got past the demo of Bioshock... not very interested in the gameplay.

Played LOL for about 2 hours and quit never to return... it is boring to me when I can't just go for it. (Feeding is the main complaint here as it penallizes aggressive play.)

I never learn shortcuts to RTS games... I always manually click everything.

Not very interested in Batman as it seems to be a more controller oriented type game and I am a mouse and keyboard guy.

Aliens vs. predator the original was a genius game, but I didn't even try to play the new one.

I feel the same way Manta173 and asked about that in the sale thread:

It doesn't sound like you use your keyboard as much as you should. Seems you should be focusing more on mouse-centric and touch-based games rather than PC. Autumn Dynasty, Plants v. Zombies, etc.

Thanks! I might one day buy the games then, although now I've kinda missed the boat. Another confession I have never been able to go get an old game and finish it.

Valid point... but I started playing them before I learned to type and didn't know where the keys are... now it's too hard to learn... and I'm lazy and don't play against people.
