3DS Catch-all

It's not just 3DS games, either. In a world where everything is governed by what's wrong, Minarchist is the one telling us what's right.

His tag should be changed to "The Filthiest Enabler".

That made me laugh more than a few times. Nicely done

Good thing he is an enabling bastard, too. I just got my first Royal sticker last night, and I'm really enjoying the game.

I think you need to cross post that in the Sticker Star thread.

Did you guys read his posts about Nier? This is nothing.

Seeing as that thread seems to have all the same people I figure it should do fine in just this thread.

I had already beaten Nier by time I joined GWJ, or was roughly at the point I was playing through it, so anything he has to say would simply get an enthusiastic nod from me.

Don't make me talk about my confining jeans again you enabling bastard. I seriously can't afford another game right now.

After buying a XL recently I have been playing Zelda again

Surprisingly I'm also enjoying Skylanders Giants which i picked up on a whim before reading any reviews and having never played Skylanders before.

I've also got my wife off her iphone and onto a 3DS again with Professor Layton (the first one), she tried Harvest Moon Two cities but just didnt click with it, so i hope the new Animal Farm comes out soon.

Oh, what is that game like? The first Skylanders game on the 3DS was sort of a 3D platformer with different shooting abilities for different Skylanders. It wasn't bad, but it was a let-down after the console version.

So, for the first time since the original Game Boy I'm a part of the handheld gaming market (unless you count iOS). Been looking for something to keep me entertained on solo business trips, so I grabbed a XL with Mario 3D... planning on getting Ocarina and NSMB2. How many blocks does the average digital download take up? I'd rather not lug around a bunch of carts if i dont have to, but I also dont want to fill this thing up already.

Also, VC games... how well do these play? Specifically the old NES remakes.

Anyone looking for a decent eShop game should check out Mutant Mudds. It's a fairly straightforward platformer based more on timing than reactions. While the game is pretty simple it can be frustratingly hard at times (for me at least). I say frustrating because you always know what you need to do, but actually doing it is another matter. I have literally played the same level for 2 or 3 hours trying to complete it. Saying that I find that now and again I get in a groove and complete 3 or 4 levels on the bounce as if they were nothing! My only real complaint is that the enemies are fairly basic, and not particularly challenging. But the level design makes up for it.

Also the 3D looks really good. I, like most people I suspect, play most games with the 3D off but it really does add to the experience in this instance.

So Theatrhythm reminds me of Dissidia in that I have no idea what all the RPG elements really do and don't really know what the main game is. It's enjoyable enough but I don't think it has legs for me.

The difference between Theatrhythm and Dissidia is that in Theatrhythm you can outright ignore the RPG elements (unless you want to unlock everything) and the core gameplay is very simple.

Yeah that's what I've been doing. I haven't touched my party or changed my equipment at all. I'm still not sure where the real meat of the game is. The Chaos Shrine?

Chaos Shrine is where you'll unlock all the extra characters, plus you can get a bunch of useful items there. New songs are unlocked just via Rhythmia, so you can get that in any mode, but Chaos Shrine gives you lots of crystal shards which unlock characters. There are also some songs you only encounter in Chaos Shrine, so I recommend starting on that sooner than later.

The RPG elements will help you with harder songs. Early on they don't seem to have much use, but when you start playing Ultimate songs you'll want a point character with high HP and defense, attackers with high Strength/Magic, etc. If you never play Ultimate songs, then you won't need to care much about it, but they do serve a purpose, much the same way they did in Dissidia.

In addition you unlock abilities that will eliminate enemies faster or help under certain circumstances. Basically, the higher level your characters are, the further distance you go in Field songs which means the greater chance of getting items from Moogles and Characters (not to mention more Rhythmia), and the more monsters you can defeat in Battle songs.

I can't remember how I specifically worded it, but I went into its pros and cons in my review and a critique of the grinding elements. So if you have a few minutes of nothin' to do there's that.

It's kind of a game where the mechanics are the meat, similarly to a fighting game or a racing game. I thought it was a little bare too when playing the basic courses, so maybe bump it up to expert if you can (I don't remember if you need to beat stuff on basic first).

I remember specifically saying in IRC that I wasn't sure anyone else on the planet would like the game as much as I did, though apparently ccesarano and ahrezmendi did. After I'd run through series mode on basic and expert my usual routine for the game was just randomly playing songs in challenge mode, occasionally on ultimate, because the moment-to-moment rhythm fun was just surreal.

Thanks, I'll check those out.

Also I added a bunch of people to my friends list. Not sure how this all works though, they still have to use my friend code too? Put it in my signature if that makes things any easier.

Edit: Read the articles and that pretty much gels with what I understood about the game. I think it's just not for me.

I'm taking you right back off my friend list.

Haha, sh*t.

Truthfully, I do enjoy it but I'm just not super compelled to keep pushing it. I'll probably play it a fair amount more over the weekend and then sell it/trade it in. As stupid as this sounds, I need a campaign or something similar, instead of just a check list of songs to work through.

I'd say play some of the more difficult tracks and spend some time in Chaos Shrine first, as I wasn't really addicted to the game until then. I came for the nostalgia, I stuck around for the mechanics.

And yeah, while I haven't played it in a while, if I plug it back into my 3DS I'll probably be right back into the flow again. This may be one of my Top 10 from this year (I have a feeling my Top 10 is going to be an all out brawl between games that did story well (Walking Dead, Spec Ops: The Line) and games that just sucked me back in for the fun of it (Theatrhythm, Resident Evil: Revelations, Mark of the Ninja).

Yeah, basically this. Really, it's like the majority of rhythm games: playing through different songs and chasing high scores is the game. I loved the game and barely touched the RPG elements or the Chaos Shrine, but I also love rhythm games.

Posting in here as well, but one of today's lightning deals for Cyber Monday on Amazon is The World Ends With You.

Anyone looking forward to the Adventure Time game: don't bother. It is shovelware extreme. Rips off Zelda 2.

Virtue's Last Reward, on the other hand, was GRIPPING. I could not put it down.

A quick search indicates no previous discussion of Virtue's Last Reward in this thread. Really?

I've been busy buying console games, and a whole new console. Even without that, I need to buy the new Prof. Layton first.

If you are playing VLR for the puzzles you are doing it wrong.

I didn't bring up Layton as a point of comparison, I just know that I like Layton, and I have no idea if I'd like Virtue's Last Reward. So Layton comes first in handheld purchase priority.

I did some very heavy enabling discussion of its predecessor, 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors in a couple other threads, but haven't had a chance to pick up the 3DS version yet. Thanks for reminding me it exists.

I haven't played 9 hours, 9 persons, 9 doors yet, but would like to play that before Virtue's Last Reward. I hadn't heard of either game until Minarchist and co., in fact.

I'm all on board for playing it.

I wouldn't call a game shovelware simply because it imitates Zelda (must...not...mention...that...game!).

Isn't it on Vita also?
