New Super Mario Bros. U Catch-All

I didn't see a post for New Super Mario Bros U, so here we go. Although the game doesn't have online multi-player, I believe adding others as friends will cause their Miiverse messages to show up. Which could be great for sharing tips. My Nintendo ID is in my sig.

Speaking of which, I'll kick things off with a question. What the heck do you do with the baby Yoshi that you find throughout the game? I know they show up around the map and follow you, but they just seem to walk around helplessly and change direction only when I jump on them. How do I get them through a course, and what are they looking for when they say they need food?

You need to pick him up and carry him. Run toward an enemy with him and you'll see. Also, if you activate your spin move while holding him he'll help you out in another way that will be obvious once you do it.

Hm... gives me an idea...

Noooooo! What will I do this weekend?

Apart from play one of the dozens of other games in the house.

I didn't much care for New Super Mario Bros. It felt too simple, felt like the only spice was the "getting huge and tiny" business.

Then I picked up New Super Mario Bros. Wii, because that's what Wii owners did, and I didn't like it. It was fun (if unbeatable) with friends, but without them it felt really lacking, like the whole thing had been designed with multiplayer specifically in mind.

Hence, I skipped New Super Mario Bros. 2. Because I didn't like the prior two, because I have and love Super Mario 3D Land.

But a new Nintendo machine needs its Mario, so I bought this more out of duty than actual want.

And it's really damn good! I'm so relieved! Damn hard, too, though I've never been the best at Mario platformers. I just finished up the Soda Jungle. The mid-world fort kicked my ass, Snake Block Tower or whatever. Each world feels distinct and each level has its own tricks, avoiding the pitfalls of the prior two games I've played. It makes me wonder if I should try NSMB2 at some point. It bums me out a little that the press is leaning toward this narrative that the series is tired, because this one feels fresh and full of new ideas to me.

How far have other people here gotten?

Also, again, I apologize for whatever I do with Miiverse. I get a big kick out of writing the dumbest thing that pops to mind in really bad script.

I'm enjoying it but that might have something to do with the fact that I didn't really play the others at all.

As I posted elsewhere, I've been away from the Mario platformers since the Gameboy days, so I've been really enjoying NSMBU.

I'm so rusty at it, I have to get used to how it handles. And the new spin move... Does anyone else feel awkward shaking the Gamepad up and down? I think I might switch to the wii mote.

On the Gamepad you can use a shoulder button/trigger for the spin jump instead of shaking.

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks!

Maybe I should have read the manual...

Oh, boy, this game is getting difficult. I'm at the mid-tower in the rock world and having a heck of a time beating

Spoiler:

the boss that sprouts wings and flys

Try wall jumping to attack, it gives you the needed altitude. Otherwise you're as likely to jump into him as you are onto him.

Just beat this tonight with Demyx. Final boss was a nice twist on the standard final boss mechanics. Not nearly as big a twist as the Wii NSMB, but a really fun and newish mechanic!

A couple other thoughts:

Squirrel outfit is cute, but didn't really dig the floating mechanic's swooping glide. Miss flying, and gliding felt better in other past outfits (ie Cape, Raccoon, Rabbit).

Managed to get a large number of Star Coins on our first attempt. Not totally sure if Certis' evaluation on the front page is wholly accurate. Not sure if he was playing solo though. Jumping off your partner or making sacrifice plays helps a ton here.

I wouldn't call this my favorite or best Mario game, but definitely the best of the New sub-series I've played (I still haven't played NSMB 2 though). Love that Nintendo is still willing to introduce a mechanic and only use it for a single level. Really gives each level its own identity.

The art direction is gorgeous. Really looking forward to seeing a 3D Mario on the Wii U. Hopefully Galaxy 3!

You seriously need to make amends for that

Yes! I think I'll start with the present and work my way backwards!

Shop conveniently left out all the times where he stole powerups that were meant for me! There will be REVENGE :p

Anyway, I really liked this game. I felt it was much simpler than NSMBWii, though maybe that's because playing through NSMBWii and getting all the star coins gave me a lot of practice.

Spoiler:

A short World 8 certainly helped.

I actually really liked the squirrel suit and found it superior to the propeller hat. The connected World Map was also very nice and fun. The downside is that the world themes were almost exactly the same as in NSMBWii. I realize that's classic Mario, but I think it would be cool if they included some more varied themes at this point. For example, there are a lot of cool level themes from the Galaxy series that they could put in a 2D game.

So the secret world for this game really ramps up the difficulty I think I was a little bit bummed they gated it behind the Star Coins, but it's not much different than Yoshi's Island where you had an extra level for each world that unlocked once you got a perfect score on each level in the world.

Also, I'm looking forward to seeing speed runs of this game. It's really cool that they added "warp zones" in the form of secret exits that take you to a level which opens a path over the next world when you complete it.

I agree with that. I just think in terms of the powerups that enable floating, I find it's harder to use due to the swooping instead of a straight angle. Although now that you bring up the propeller hat, the squirrel double jump feels very similar: lots of vertical motion, not a lot of horizontal on the ascent or descent.
