Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

Ooooooooooooookay man...(you crazy)

Well, well well... Sword of the Stars II has finally been released! It takes the form of Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition, which includes a new expansion. All owners of SOTS2 will receive the new edition and expansion for free.

For what it's worth, I hope this is going to be like The Witcher: Enhanced Edition, the most excellent fulfillment of the original vision after an "undercooked" original release. Granted, the latter started from more stable ground than SOTS2, but I can remain optimistic. CDPR showed that it can be done.

I find it weird that Paradox is bragging that they funded the SOTS2 patches, since I understand that they were the ones who put a ton of pressure on Kerberos to release the unfinished game in the first place. Perhaps given Kerberos's allegedly lackadaisical attitude toward timely development, Paradox just taught them a huge lesson. Hard to say. I really admire both Paradox and SOTS1, so here's hoping it all works out.

Yeah I really hope it becomes not just playable (which it is at the moment) but enjoyable. I can just see a good game teeming under there and I'd love to play it, without being annoyed every few seconds.

I just backed Star Citizen, but I'm feeling ambivalent about the whole tiered rewards thing in general. Scrolling down from the promise of "No Pay To Win" to the list of fancy ships you can get for real money is... a little odd.

Any thoughts on Star Wolves? On sale cheap on GOG...

Space RPG with group-based tactical combat. It's not one ship vs. the world, but your gang of pilots. Game is linear as far as I played (a couple of hours). Nothing about this blew me away, but I enjoyed what I played.

Really fun tactical space rpg thingy. I've enjoyed all 3 immensely.

I liked it as well. Sort of a poor man's Nexus.

Chris Roberts has an interview over at GOG: http://www.gog.com/news/ask_develope...

Hey y'all, my latest Let's Play video for Rules of Engagement 2 is up! Please enjoy watching me flail all over the place.

So, I've been playing some Drox Operative, which I like very much, but I think I must be missing or misunderstanding something.

I've been playing as a human, and what I'm finding is that by midgame, I'm hopelessly outclassed. Like, in the current game I'm in, I think I'm level 12, and when I inspect Level 12 allied ships, they all have components that take stats in the mid- to high-30s to wield, where I'm stuck down in the teens for most stuff. Killing just one ship by one enemy nation is a major PITA, because they're just so much tougher than I am. (last game, for instance, the Fringe had Escorts with 20 structural points and 350 points of armor, when the very best I could wear was 98, and that was a super-duper rare. And when my laser cannon is doing 30dps, and takes a Tactics of something like 24 to wield, well... even killing just one of the very smallest ships takes a long, long time, and usually requires me to burn a consumable to get some more energy. And that's assuming I can even survive what they're shooting at me, which seems about twice as strong as what I have.

I tried restarting a new game with level 10 critters to start with, and now I'm getting chewed up pretty bad by them... I can win, and kill them by the dozen if I'm careful and use my mines well, but they hit so insanely hard compared to what I can do, and I still outlevel them.

Am I missing something, here? Am I supposed to be absolutely outclassed by anything at the same level?

Huh, last time I got that high in level was in the early beta, and I didn't notice that. Maybe you want to post this on the official forums so it could be looked into? That doesn't really sound like a good time...

People! The Distant World games are on sale again until mid-January for 35% off, bringing the game and its two expansion to a little less than $60.

Distant Worlds is $25.99
Distant Worlds – Return of the Shakturi is !$5.99
Distant Worlds - Legends is also $15.99

If you can, snag these folks, they're worth every penny!

Note that these are more Sims-like than War in the Galaxy style games. You set things in motion and intervene at times, maybe run the military, but DW is not a grand strategy game where you control every piece and have perfect information. You watch the game as much as you play it.

That said, it's lot of fun if that's the way you warp.

It's kinda EU3 in space.

Yeah, you can micro or macro manage things as you desire, for the most part. It feels like a mix of grand strategy and galactic ant farm, and I love both watching and interacting with it all.

Whew, I'm safe.

DAMMIT, TBOON.

Must.. resist.. Pile too big already..

If I may pimp my review/game diary, they might give some insight into how the game plays from the perspective of a n00b, which I totally was when I began.

That is a fantastic deal, especially since Matrix is very Scroogelike with their deals.

Is this still your favorite Space Strategy game Veloxi?

It may be time for an updated review/diary or perhaps a video?

Hey y'all, a reader pointed out this Kickstartered spacey game which looks honestly pretty damned cool

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

The kid has style, I'll give him my that. And damn if it isn't pretty.

Seeing these space sim kickstarters is starting to become unbearably heart-breaking. They're so damned earnest!

A lot of them are, yes. Some range from seemingly apathetic to downright goofy (there was one, the name of which I forget, in which the two programmers introduced the video by speaking in unison. Totally freaking weird).

StarJacked

Oh god, yes, that one. *shudder*

So, I just pledged/backed Star Citizen -- apologies if anyone else wanted in on the Early Adopter tier, as I was the 4,581st person to jump into that side of the pool, and the tier is now closed. That's almost an achievement unto itself!

Armada 2526 is $3 right now on Steam. I own it but haven't played it, so I cannot comment on whether or not the game is worth the price of admission.

At that price who could complain? Then again, Steam doesn't have the Gold edition and I believe that's the more definitive version to have.

There are some other spacey games on deep discount. Star Ruler, Space Empires, ect. Veloxi, you could get a ton of hits during the holiday season if you did a Steam sale space sim buyer's guide.
